Snorkeling David Copperfield's Mermaid Piano | Sailboat Story 46

  • In this vlog, we anchor our sailboat at Rudder Cut Cay so that we can go snorkeling at the famous mermaid piano. It's AWESOME!
    When I began to edit this video, I realized that all of the footage was shot on the GoPro. At first, this doesn't sound like a big deal, but the fact of the matter is that it creates a bit of a challenge when you realize that the GoPro was in it's underwater case the whole time.
    Gopro + Underwater Case = Really Bad Sound
    So that's why this episode kinda turned into something of an Almost-Full-Length-Music-Video. Honestly, I think it turned out kinda cool despite the complete absence of audio. Heck, maybe I'm worrying too much - perhaps NOT hearing my voice for an entire episode will end up being something of a treat. :)
    Soooooooooo...
    This video takes place at Rudder Cut Cay. Lovely place! (I bet you've heard that before). The primary attractions are "The Mermaid Piano OR Copperfield's Piano", and also an interesting water-side cave.
    Now, the islands around Rudder Cut and Musha are private. You can't go exploring at all on land. In fact, we've heard that other cruisers report that they have seen guard dogs roaming the islands, so it might be best to just stick to the water around here.
    Some people call the piano "Copperfield's Piano" because it was put there by David Copperfield... possibly the undesirable result of a magic trick gone wrong - perhaps even caused by an event as simple as a inadvertent flick of the wrist. The world will never really know, but I can only imagine how he intended for the instrument to appear in his living room, when it instead appeared 100ft above sea level just off of Rudder Cut Cay causing the 15,000 lb mass to come crashing down with a terrific splash, forever to be adorned and cherished by all manner of sea-people who believe it was placed there intentionally.
    Wow, I got carried away on that one. I digress...
    The piano itself is stainless steel, and extremely heavy. The mermaid was added at a later date, and she is often adorned with beads, sunglasses, and other paraphernalia from passing cruisers.
    Okidokey. Well, we hope you enjoy the video!
    Thanks for watching!!

Thanks for the compliment, and glad to hear that you're still enjoying the show. :)

    Hello Ben, Tambi & Molly, I enjoyed this episode, the behind the scenes view with the two go pros, the music which is great and the dancing made me lol! Also the clever production pieces, like where the viewer is sure it is Ben wearing the head mounted gopro, until you see Mollys face appear in the mirror, or your use of the placement of the cameras to give a wider view, of where you are and what you are doing, instead of the constant in your face selfie view many sailing channels limit themselves to.
    Regards, Dave.

    You are an extraordinarily talented and gifted guy Normally when I run across a sailing VLOG that tries to get "artsy" by making a "Music Video", they fall flat and produce something that is at best, tedious. Even embarrassing on occasion. There are a very rare set of instincts that enable a very few to create exceptional works. I don't know what those instincts are but you have every damn one of them. I watched this latest video again in an effort to figure out what makes your work stand out in such stark relief against anyone else's offerings and I can't. I don't know what it is.( beyond the young and beautiful Tamby). It just is. I have decided that henceforth, you shall be called, "The Spielberg of VLOG's" I don't want to pour on the pressure and make you self conscience because over analyzing yourself can be deadly. I would just say be comfortable and continue to have fun and your unique and pleasing productions will continue to flow and most importantly, to grow.

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow. Feels... so gooooood. :)
      Let me tell ya - I really enjoyed reading that - all 3 times.
      I mean, we try to produce good videos - but parts of this adventure have been tough at times. Believe it or not, sometimes it feels an aweful lot like work... there are even times when I have to really get motivated to edit, especially after a long sail or in the midst of a cold front for instance.
      BUT... hearing genuine, honest appreciation for the videos makes it all absolutely worth it.
      Here's another thing - and really try to get this...
      I grew up being particularly artistic. I was skilled at drawing, at music, and building things. However, when I "grew up" I lost touch with that side of me...
      I was busy working, dating, having fun, then marriage, then Molly was born, then more work... basically I totally lost that creative outlet.
      Now though, these videos have filled a void. At first it was an entire new "medium" that required skills that I simply did not have. The results are painfully apparent in our early videos. Since our early videos, I've improved, and have found that I really enjoy making these videos.
      For me, the videos are a mix of a lot of things I like. They're a family record, of sorts. They kinda force us to do new and fun things so we have interesting things to film - and they have certainly filled the need of a creative outlet that I went so long without.
      So yeah - thanks for saying those things. It feels wonderful to not only have that void filled, but to also know that the fruits of our labors are being so well received and enjoyed by others.
      Thanks. ;)
      PS: This is the longest reply I have ever made.

      I think there's one thing that you do (and I may be wrong) is to sneak in subtle little references to great stuff like "Raising Arizona" and such. If I did correctly pick this up, then I have to say, you do it perfectly. It's a talent. Not overt. Not garish. Just subtle and perfect. It's a talent. Yes sir. It's a talent.

    Great dude - a lesson in the juxtaposition of sailing with an electronic jazz funk vibe. Smooooth.
    BTW - Pretty Lights are playing down in Puerto Rico in December - do you think you'll make it down that far? Super expensive, but you could anchor off the resort and listen *really* carefully.

      Oh I didn't know that. I'm not much into concerts or evens where there are a lot of people. In fact, one of my least favorite things ever are theme parks. Just a little insight into the inner working of my personality. Still, I certainly do like his music. We won't be making it that far south, in fact, we're already making slow progress North.

    Ok...... I gotta ask Ben,..........what's with the full body wet suit?? The water has to be in the 80's almost by now :)

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, I thought the same thing before we arrived. The water, up until a couple weeks ago, was uncomfortably cold. Everyone who had a wetsuit was wearing it, and those who didn't wished they had a wetsuit.
      Some seasoned cruisers claim the water has been unseasonably cold this year. It's getting into the mid-70s now, but still a loooong way off from 80... I wish!

    Where did you learn your video production skills?! Every time I watch one of your videos I don't see a video, I see a production. These things are amazing, you could market your skills, I can think of a few channels that could use your skills to make their vids more engaging.

      Thanks for the compliment. My education in video editing has all been by way of trial and error. I learn by doing, and that's exactly how I got to this point - of which I still have lots of learning to do!
      Glad you like our videos, and I always love hearing about how we measure up to other channels. I want to keep getting better and continue to grow the channel and our exposure to a point where we can really promote family sailing on a budget and help other people embark on adventures of their own.
      Thanks for watching - and if you haven't already, please consider sharing the video. :)

    How do you even visualize what you're going to do with your video. Your creativity is ... well I don't know a good enough adjective to describe it.

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dump all the footage in.
      I look through it and decide on a "mood".
      I search for music that fits the mood.
      I cut and trim the footage so that it;
      1) Tells a story
      2) Fit's the mood as well as it can
      I watch the almost complete video over and over and make small adjustments.
      I export it, watch the final cut, and see a dozen more things that I should have changed.
      That's my process.

    • @CGCampbellJr
      @CGCampbellJr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, let me tell you something, as a viewer/subscriber, you understate your process by an order of magnitude. Others do video blogs. Other cruisers do them. What they do, is start the camera and talk. maybe show a pan of a beach. Then there are those who have achieved some skill. The Wynns are in this level, I believe. They manage to tell a coherent narrative. Their videos are more interesting than the first group. Make a viewer want more.
      Then...
      There are those on your level. I'm serious. I have no way of even truly imagining your creativity, because I don't have it, and know my limits. You are an AMAZING videographer. Yes, if you had better equipment (read: could afford better), you'd be even more off the chain. But you tell an amazing story, every week, using what you have.
      I have 25 subscriptions I view (mostly) weekly. Few, however, do I actually look forward to viewing, as much as I do yours.
      May you always have the wind you need, the seas you want, and the willingness to go the miles...
      (Fair winds and following seas)

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for taking the time to provide that feedback.
      It feels really good to know that we're making videos that are enjoyable - but are also on a high level comparatively.
      Who would have thought that would be the case considering the lacking quality of our first videos?
      Still, I'm not satisfied. There are so many times I cringe during my edits. Need to get better at narrating, smoother with the camera movements, and to gain better foresight during filming so that everything meshes better on the backend.
      That's probably more than you wanted to hear but it helps me process those thoughts by communicating them while they're fresh.
      Bottom line: Thanks for watching!

    good job Ben. BTW, Tambi looks like she would like to breath when snorkeling.

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Swish!! Yeah - she can't hold her breath very long. She's good for about 15 seconds.
      I've been trying to train her to hold her breath longer for the last 12 years or so. You see, several times a day, I produce a pungent odor that encourages her to stop breathing for a short period of time. However, I think that instead of holding her breath, she's simply become immune - and therefore has not responded as well to my secret training regimen as I had initially hoped.
      The fault is my own.

      Hey Mike. Ok, that's a "Chain Gripper Plate" by Seadog.
      www.sea-dog.com/groups/451-chain-gripper-plate
      I chose this over a standard chain hook because it's more redundant - basically we're riding to 2 skinners instead of only 1, which I suppose makes it more of a bridle setup.
      I like it a lot.

      Yeah - most of them aren't as advertised, from my experience. You have to keep looking. If the boat could work, in spite of the expenses, go ahead and make the offer, if you're alright with the work required.
      Keep looking. You'll find her. It's out there somewhere right this moment waiting on you to find her.
