I can't think of a single other director who came out the gate with their identity so solidified already as Michael Mann, he knew EXACTLY who he was for this debut movie. Just an incredible film, the soundtrack is terrific, and the cinematography and shot composition is among the best I've ever seen
Couldn’t agree more! Although my favourite Mann film is probably Manhunter or Heat (predictable choices perhaps, but they are so brilliant that you can hardly blame me) I think Thief is an astonishing film and such a great debut from a master of cinema!
i just found this movie this year and OMG this honestly has to be one the most lost gems no one ever talks about. from the look the soundtrack the amazing acting from Michael Mann's Directing to JAMES CAAN just out of this world performance in this. THIS MOVIE outdoes anything Caan has done this is a masterpiece and thank you so much for this theme LOVE THEIF !!!
@@fabianavalos1386 Well I guess I’m one of the lucky few who slipped through the cracks. There are plenty of us who appreciate these films, do not worry.
I’ve been watching this movie since the 80’s. I watch it at least 6 times a year. This movie was amazing and the soundtrack is perfect with the cinematography. Rest in Peace Caan. This movie in my mind made you a legend.
I worked at a local movie 🍿 theater in 1981. I was 17. This movie just was released. It was one of my ultimate favorite movies. Especially the end.... "Confrontation" is a super bad-azz instrumental. It rocks! Even to this very day!
joey...... ...- This is my 'getting up in the morning, lighting cigarette, wondering where the woman from night before has gone, and hitting the shower, and getting ready to hit the city again in my Camaro'' - theme music. 0f course I live in a dirty bedsit (1 bedroomed Dump). There has been no woman for many years, and I have one of those detachable slip-on slip-off shower bungs that go over the faucets and I live on the outskirts of industrial town in Scotland.. I also have a paunch (Beer Belly). My shower bung is held onto the bath taps with hose clamps and there is algae on the walls ! Marvellous Michael Mann Movie !
I was 12. We just got HBO. My dad would get home from work and watch movies til midnight or so. I remember waking up and sitting next to him on the couch just as James Caan was entering thru the screen door. I was mesmerised once this track played as the bosses brains were blown out. I’m now 52 years old and I get that same feeling when I play this
I remember watching this movie and being blown away by the soundtrack, especially Confrontation. I remember thinking at the time, “Who the hell is this? OMG! Of course I waited for the end credits to see and then rewound the VHS to listen again! Not that it matters but I bought a CD a few years. ago that I’ve never unsealed. No reason really just haven’t.
This was excellent! Great work. My brother took me to see Thief in 1981 when I was 8, when we walked out at the end my brother said we gotta see it again, we went back the next weekend. We went to the record store and he bought the Tangerine Dream Thief soundtrack on cassette. So cool riding around listening to it in his 1970 Mach one. Just one of the greatest all around films ever, Acting cinematography, soundtrack. When we bought our first VCR in 1985, we rented Thief the first night, bought the tape in 1995? And I just got the Criterion Blue Ray. Amazing.

The entire soundtrack was composed and performed by Tangerine Dream, Edgar Froese,Chris Franke and Johannes Schmoelling, except "Confrontation",composed and performed by Craig Safan plus other studio session artists not mentioned. This track was not included in the original soundtrack released in 1981, but later the uncut U.S. version.
Not quite...this track was present in the original Elektra soundtrack release for the US market which was released contemporaneously with the film, not "later."
I've been listening to this for probably 40 years or more. What you've done here is just masterful! I didn't think any of the original could be improved, but you've done an excellent job. BTW, is it true that Craig Safan played every instrument and every track on this song? Amazing. Great work!
I hear the solo from comfortably numb. Michale mann wanted it in the film pink floyd said no so they based this on the final solo on the song. A bad ass film they couldnt make an ending like this now it drips in coolness and bad assery ❤
Does anyone know why this song is not on every copy of the Thief soundtrack? Decades & decades ago, I had it on vinyl, this song included. A handful of years ago, I bought a CD version which did not contain this, my favorite song of the soundtrack. It seems finding versions that do include this astounding, mind blowing, adrenal, "I've had it, and some bastards are gonna pay" song are very difficult to find!
few years ago I heard this "song" on radio (was it CHOM ? not sure). And I thought wow this sounds like PF... then searched for keywords on the internet and found that soundtrack but mostly discovered that piece of art which is Thief
wait, but what about the song that plays near the end, between the two discussions with Robert Prosky? it's the best one, and it's not in the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.
@@AndyKing1963 are you talking about Confrontation? I mean that other song when he's driving to the store, right before James Belushi is killed. Can't find it anywhere.
Nobody does soundtracks like Tangerines Dream. Most people are unaware of who they are and how many movies they have helped improve. Their recordings are phenomenal. If you want to try something similar try their album "Lily on the Beach". The guitar is outright scary.

My goodness! How I understand you! I also saw this movie when I was a teenager, and I have EXACTLY the same feeling and memory as you: the final shootout... start this music... The "blown" brains.... And the coolness of Caan's movement reloading his gun, to the side. I spent days imitating that movement, and the effect of the shot on Denis Farina. It's amazing how a combination of image and sound can be recorded like that, isn't it? For the rest of my life...
Remembering the ABC or CBS or NBC 8 0’clock movie themes or Saturday / Sunday night at the movies. We sat thru commercials with no remote and it was just fine, remember the black & white before color.

I like nearly everything Mann produced. This song is a perfect accompaniment to the film's denouement. Terrific stuff.

It was actually written by Carl Safan because Tangerine Dream were on tour. It's only on certain versions on the OST.
