- There is more talk of the tv licence fee turning in to a tax, maybe to mirror what Germany do, well why not copy some other countries instead?

Just scrap the TV licence and the BBC.
Too right ;-)
I agree...but we all know deep down that they will go down the taxation route...so nobody can avoid it.
No need to scrap the license, just scrap the BBC problem solved.
Scrap the licence and let the BBC survive on its merit and value it brings, I’m sure it’ll last long time 🎉
What about Clone? 😮
From where did the notion come from that the BBC has some God given right to even exist?
guess because they've been operating for almost a century at this point... through all the scandals etc. with zero actual repercussions for anything. mostly it is older people who still worship the BBC looking past all of the garbage for "muh public service broadcasts"
public service my rear end
edit: BBC founded in 1922 so they've been operating for over a century now. unless there is a serious change in average public sentiment (e.g. older generations not worshipping them) it'll likely just get worse
It was probably as it started as a public service. At a time were public service was appreciated.
They dont
looks like my reply to this was deleted. did I say something wrong?
Absolutely, when you think of all the great British companies that have been allowed to go to the wall some probably through bad management what is so sacrosanct about the BBC. It's a dead man walking trying to save the cost of a funeral.
The BBC should pay us
Compensation for a lifetime of brain damage
They couldn't afford me...
The British Benefits Corporation…lol😇
£159 is a drop in the ocean, compared to what Sir Peter earns and has in his bank accounts. How dare he say that everyone should pay a monthly tax of up to £20 a month to watch television.
We are having a hard enough time as it is, money-wise! 😡
Absolutely… He’s a multimillionaire and lives in a huge house in London’s Notting Hill. He has absolutely no idea what Britain’s poorest can and can’t afford.
@@bretton_woods I think that valuation of yours needs a second opinion. 😂
Someone tell the former ITV chairman to go and do one.
My Neighbour does not drive, should they pay road tax then as well.
They can't produce entertainment that is worth watching, so instead they are forcing you to pay for it.
Someone tell the itv chairman wined your neck in no more money for the gravy train
Actually they do already because the car tax (VED) does not pay for the roads, the road budget comes out of general taxation. But roads are necessary for everyone whether they have a car or not. The BBC isn't.
I don’t drive but we are all charged road tax because the people that do pay it we pay for are food to be delivered no tv is watched in my home & I am breaking no law fact I am licence free & will be the day I die
well of course they should: don't you realise the damage that pedestrians cause waddling down the streets and as to those pensioners with their zimmer frames the repeated impacts from their METAL legs is quite possibly the cause of half the potholes that we see. Roll on the day when councils are allowed to charge these vandals an extra Zimmer tax to cover the additional damage they cause.
I am not going to pay for something I don't watch
I don't even own a TV - haven't had one for donkeys years - any Council that thinks it's going to get money out of me for absolutely nothing will be facing Court Action. I get little enough for my Council Tax as it is. It goes up by 5% a year regardless, because of every Councils' spend thrift ways , my annual wage does not go up by 5% a year to compensate - it hasn't gone up in many years !
@@jamesbarbour8400 same they can do one
How about the American system, where there is no licence and TV channels are either free to watch, paid for by ads, or subscribed to.
I don't even have a TV, because I don't watch or need one.
Why should I pay tax for something I not only don't use, but can't use?
Also why does it need to be well over the price of any streaming platform?
Oh yeah, because our glorious propaganda outlet doesn't have enough money for a gold-plated newsroom.
I pay for schools with my taxes but I dont have kids. However, we need schools for the benefit of society so I'm happy to pay for that. No one needs to watch broadcast TV though!
I don’t even see why I should pay for the current woke indoctrination that passes for schooling here with no kids.I chose not to have them just like mainstream tv so……
schools are great (if you want your child to return home a different gender)
@@TONE11111 loll true
I will have you know I went to school as a female and I am still one! and what I learnt about the industrial revolution and the pyramids has held me in good stead!@@TONE11111
Your also be paying for other people’s kids school dinners 😂
Talk of an additional tax during a cost of living crisis is about as welcome as an abortion doctor at a baby shower.
If Peter Bazalgette, whose claim to fame is his great great grandfather, Sir Joseph Bazalgette, who created the central London sewerage system in response to the *Great Stink* of 1858, wishes to pay for Auntie good for him, but he has no right whatsoever to suggest that *everyone* is *_forced_* to pay for an outmoded system that should have dǐed off long ago.
That would explain why he is so enthusiastic about sewage.
@@icdgyixifyinstereo : Why, because he talks a load of shit 😂😂😂
Bit like paying for road tax whether you own a car on the road or not. Complete and utter madness.
That will be next, especially how London and Birmingham are going!
Actually, most people do pay a road tax even if they don't own a car, via the highway maintenance charges included in council tax.
There's no such thing as Road Tax
@@FreeFlyerUk still a tax none the less
@@focusmicroindeed - regardless of what the money gets spent on, we still have to fork out our hard earned dosh. Splitting hairs over what it gets spent on is purely an exercise in semantics and as such, a complete waste of time and effort !
I'm in no mood to pay a TV Tax to funds people who like to 'choose' from the kid's menu. If you need the tv licence fee as a life support to keep you going, maybe your not good enough as a broadcaster to begin with?
Well said..
Good point.
Top comment 👍
The grabbing hands grab all they can!
Martin Gore, 1983!
It's a competitive world... unless you're the 'it will find an audience' BBC.
Everything counts in large amounts .
BBC certainly count their licence fee revenues in large amounts 😊
Yes I agree ,the public should vote on it👍
Peter Bazalgette formed his own production company Bazal which produed daytime filler for BBC with progs such as; Ready Steady Cook, Changing Rooms and Groundforce. He is the great-great-grandson of Victorian civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette who engineered the new sewer system for London. In his Evening Standard tv review column, Victor Lewis Smith said that Peter Bazalgette was carrying on the family tradition by channeling shit to our tv screens!
Oh dear. YT took offense to my previous reply. Doesn't like the well off getting some criticism.
I was about to make a very similar comment, but you've beaten me to it. The more things change, the more they stay the same, it would seem !
Dear Sir Peter. I pay a council tax for services I don't bl00dy receive, so I'm not paying a TV tax for something i neither want nor need.
2 words to Sir Peter..... FOXTROT OSCAR.
✌️
If they do add a TV tax into the council tax then people should just not pay that portion of it. I wouldn't and I'd be willing to go to court over it.
@@stevegee8010same. It's got to the point we have to fight back.

Wasn't even controversial.
Ooooh I'm being monitored 👀
I have said this in the past and I will say it again. TAX is the most powerful word the goberment has to use.
If you don't watch tv why should you have to pay a tax for it not on your life.
You can legally watch tv without a licence,JUST dont watch bbc,or anything live google it and you will see
Tax, tax, tax, bloody tax.... Eff Off....
So broadcasting should be treated as an emergency service. They are deluded.
This is getting desperate for them
TV in its traditional sense is becoming obsolete.
Paying tax for shite we don't watch no fcuking way.
After becoming educated on the law surrounding the TV license from guys like chillijoncarne and black belt barrister I will no longer be paying for a tv licence. I will not live in fear because of there scare mongering letters and if some tv goon salesman comes to the door I shall say no thank you and close the door. Saving me £159. Amazing stuff!
Just say no. Privatize and break up the BBC.
And the NHS
I don't have a TV so I am not supporting it at all, anytime. Why should I.
No way, I don't want to pay for a service i dont use!
Like we don't get taxed on enough things in this country.
Its like paying Tesco to be allowed to shop at Aldi, its disgusting
If they start doing that, I will simply avoid paying it, stick me in prison. It will cost you more to house and feed me 3 meals a day then the cost of the tax a year.... I WIN they LOSE!
They print the money anyway, country is in debt up to its eyeballs. Cost them nothing to keep you in prison.
Never will they get a penny out of me
I’m telling you now, the BBC has been having behind closed doors meetings with other broadcasters regarding TVL, currently only the BBC get paid from it, these meetings will be discussing a TV Tax because if it goes ahead then the other broadcasters will get a cut of the pie, therefor the other broadcasters will publicly “mention” a tv tax when they can as it’ll be in their interest
I agree. They’ve seen the writing on the wall and realise that 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing
I won’t be paying regardless…absolute insanity 😮
It’ll likely be added to your council tax, so you won’t have an option.
Everyone should pay for a fishing licence wether they go fishing or not. How does that sound?
Great mate
😂
@alangriffiths2100 : Good job they’ve abolished the dog’s licence or else we’d be paying for one of those as well.
Last time i checked, watching tv isnt a necessity. Why should we pay for other people's tv watching when schools aren't funded properly? Keep the tv license as it is, not a universal tax.
Amen 🙏
Why not charge everyone road tax whether we drive or not?
Or a Tesco/Sainsbury/whatever tax, whether we shop there or not, to ensure those fine institutions stay solvent?
Or a rail tax to pay for HS2 etc, even if we never travel by rail?
Or a council tax whether we use their services - whether we even GET those services any more?
...Damn! We already do that last one, don't we?
That’s a valid point if you watch ITV, but don’t watch BBC you still have to pay for the BBC surely the license fee should be split up between the broadcasters and radio stations evenly, could you imagine Amazon Netflix, ITV all getting a even cut based on viewership. But unfortunately, the BBC thinks it has a God-given right to exist.
Tax is optional. If you don't want the service, don't pay it.
The start point is always, how to maintain £4 billion and no change at the top! Anything other than making them earn the money.
THEY SHOULD NOT PAY THEMSELVES EXTORTIONATE SALARYS
It should be treated like any other business, make your own money or sink, and this might force them to ditch the repeats and make new exciting programs.
I just got one of those `Our Officers will call` letters. As I do not watch live broadcast TV (And have no `catch-up` services) I will be following Jon`s great advice to the letter!
if i dont drive and dont use the bus or train , taxi or any form of transport except for walking then why should i pay for road tax its the same thing as for TV tax to quote Mrs Thather NO NO NO
If they produced better quality and unbiased content, reduced the stupid payments to the likes of lineker then maybe I would feel happy to pay, having said that I took your advice and stopped paying my TV License Fee, Thank you for your valued advice.
Yes make it a tax for all earners of £100,000+ and include everyone who has a title eg Sir/Lord/Lady/Dame etc. All of these together can easily afford to cover what the BBC needs to operate. The rest of us can then be exempt. This sounds like the fairest way forward to me.
I'm disgusted that he thinks you should pay a TV Tax, "even if you don't watch TV"
But this is what will happen if YOU don't stop campaigning to get it stopped...... JUST LEAVE IT ALONE and let them that need to pay, or want to pay, buy a TV Licence.
Just bring awareness as to the rights and legal obligations to people who don't need to pay it if they don't watch, or record, LIVE TV or watch iPlayer.
What will paying for the TV Licence achieve. We've been saying it for years that even with the £159 pp TV licence, the BBC still continues to struggle. It doesn't work for us because it's getting expensive and it doesn't work for the BBC whom say it's not enough public money. Unless we each pay £10, 000 annually the BBC will continue to struggle.
Only if you do watch TV should you pay
based on current exchange rates, the Germans are paying 187 pounds per year. if we were to adopt such a system, what would happen to people on low incomes and benefits? it is not as if we do not have a cost of living crisis at the moment.
I said a few years ago that I feared that the TV license could be imposed on everybody. Just think how much money the BBC and the government would be making if they forced everybody to pay for a TV license. Especially if they keep the license fee at the same price. But as we all know everything has to go up
AND COME DOWN
I got one of their threatening letters today. In it one of the threats was to interview me under caution in accordance with national criminal law. The thing is I already have an upto date TV license. I won't be renewing it in March though because I don't even need one.
Why should people who don't watch TV pay for something that they don't use? Subscription or advertising revenues are the only way it should be.
I've got an idea, if they provide the TV I'll get a licence but don't ask me to pay for a licence for something I don't own. Would I buy a Dog licence if I didn't own a Dog?
@@TONE11111 TV tax, not broadcasted programs. Did you actually watch the video?
Do I get a discount for my cat?
in france, they put it as an extra on local tax, but you can opt out easily enough
Channel 4 is going down the pan, that’s why he wants a tax so the money goes in that direction.
I believe the BBC owns 50% of ch4.
I currently live in Poland and I only found out their was a TV tax by watching one of John's old videos.
I've not paid it and I don't know anyone who does. We get no letters asking us to pay it, no goons, absolutely nothing. It's more like a voluntary contribution I suppose.
The Polish system would definitely be the best funding method for Britain.
Why should we adopt a foriegn system because it leaves us open to pay monthly for nhs next
On the contrary it makes perfect sense to the government and media elite. Given a choice very few would pay for access to the BBC on its own. So it has to be paid for by a tax or else there's no BBC. And while I am many others would only shed tears of joy at the demise of the BBC, it would be a disaster for the old legacy media, all the luvvies and politicians that it supports.
Perfectly fine with no "Auntie".
He is pleading for his own special interests.
As you say, his conpanies have mostly sold into TV paid for by commercials. He does not want competition for that advertising spend.
If it goes on to an un-avoidable tax, it would free those cutmreently without a licence to watch his programnes with advertising breaks.
And, as you say, giving money to C4 would throw money his way.
For some people public subsidy is the only allowable answer.
Why would they impose a TV tax? Simple; TV licence fee is reducing rapidly as more and more people, dissatisfied with the "service" they get from the BBC, are refusing to pay it. Either the BBC joins the real world and becomes a subscription service (much too much like hard work for the BBC) or they find a way of restoring to previous levels the amount of money that lands in its lap. I reckon there is a real danger that some form of TV tax is on its way.
He can FRO!
I wonder what the internet will think in 50 years watching you walking around and discussing this issue. Awesome!
Never ever give up the fight. The poll tax was brought down and so will this
Keep up the good work Jon. I do envy your local area as I love boats and water. Must look even better in the Summer.
Sir Peter Lytton Bazalgette is the 3rd great grandson of Sir Joseph Bazalgette. He’s the guy who sorted out London’s chronic sewer problem of 1858. He effectively put an end to the cholera and typhoid epidemics that was plaguing Londoners at that time. He’s also responsible for the construction of London Embankment and several other huge engineering projects. A thoroughly decent bloke by all accounts.
The president day, Sir Bazalgette is a snooty multimillionaire who lives in huge swanky house in London’s Notting Hill, he’s hardly a man of the people and therefore shouldn’t be telling us what we can and can’t afford.
The. BBC are probably paying him a great deal of money to fight their corner.
you watch how quick my tv is in the bin if this comes in.
I think the former ITV chairman should pay my road tax whether or not I take him as a passenger
Paying for a service you don't use, yes that seems TOTALLY FAIR ! 🤣😂😅😂👏👏👏
No mandatory taxation without representation - including the BBC and Channel 4 devoting equal time representation of all opinions they don't like. If not, they can earn their income by competing fairly the same way as everyone else.
"No mandatory taxation without representation" I cant vote because I dont have photo ID but Im still taxed.
one pound a year is all i would pay
It would appear that somebody is informing TV Licensing when somebody dies.
I originally had the TV license in my name, but when my wife, who was
older than me, reached 75, I changed the name of the licensee to her.
When the free over 75 license was revoked in 2020, my wife still qualified
as she was on pension credit.
My wife died in December 2023 and within a month I had a letter from TV licensing
stating that the free license for my address may now not be valid.
The letter was addressed to "The Occupier". Previously the Licences had been
addressed to my wife. They must be informed by somebody when a death occurs.
I think this is absolutely disgusting.
I wonder if it is the "Tell Us Once" government website that informs TV Licensing.
They certainly don't list TV Licensing as one authorities they inform.
It would appear that TV Licensing know everything about a license holder.
I must admit I would have had no intention of telling them myself.
Needless to say I will not be buying a TV License and I never will.
A pole tax by any other name then. We haven't had (or watched!) a TV , or any other live-stream stuff, for 18 years. Why should we be asked to pay this. And how on earth has the US prospered without a TV licence?
You shouldn’t just like many myself included. I have no intention of watching government propaganda and rubbish……….
I haven't watched TV since 1992 beyond visiting relatives or friends if they happen to have something good on
Saw last night and that on BBC2 is a programme with David Mitchell that has been been on Dave. xx
It would end up like road tax where only a quarter goes on roads.
If they provided decent stuff to watch on any of the original TV channels we would watch it but all of it's garbage haven't watch any of it in years
Interesting that a descendant of the famous engineer who removed sewage efficiently from London is happy to bring most of it back.
coming next Everybody must pay a harbour tax whether you have a harbour or live inland (ship tax was one of the causes of the Civil War) , the compulsory polo tax to support the very expensive strings of horses posh twits(substitute your own a) etc needed etc paid whether you attend matches or not, the murky opportunities for government to back their friends are endless
Channel 4 has adverts to raise money.
If they try to introduce some sort of TV Tax whether you watch crappy broadcast TV or not, I'll get shot of my TV and replace it with a monitor to watch media on.
The point is, according to that fellow, is you must pay regardless. Not having a TV would not get you out of it.

P.S. the companies lobbyists would scream the house down in wastemonster forcing them to change.
Never forget... You are a cash cow, they do not give a f*CK about you, they just want your neverending money stream.
I wander where bbc would be if they were to get payment based on channel subscriptions only.
Why do people want us to pay for something we don't use or watch?
At no time will I pay a tv tax.
OMG, insane!!!
Loving the fuzz Jon ❤
I imagine that the public vote will state that 66 million people will demand that the licence fee is kept and indeed includes a price hike. Nothing bent about voting huh 😂😂😂 those votes will probably include the deceased too😂
I dont have photo ID so I cant vote anymore anyway.
Apparently its the immigrants fault.
Why can't the BBC just have advert. Because they do in a way in their programs. Take EastEnders for example products are on display in the background. and many other programs on the BBC . ITV do not show products in their programs
or programme sponsors, ?
I just listened to an item about the UAE-backed takeover of the Daily Telegraph in which MPs warned of the consequences of having state owned media. It was actually suggested that not even the British state should own media because of the possibility of it being used for propaganda purposes. The irony was seemingly lost on them, but not on me.
So all those that don't drive need to pay insurance for a car they don't drive, etc etc.
Do all the commonwealth countries have to pay a tv tax to the bbc if so why are they not collectively refusing to agree to the bbc demands and extortion. By pushing them out of their countries islands and by lands have em in court with a list of their crimes that we would be responsible for by association as we funded their crimes they forced us to pay through fear and threats with no regard for life or mental health 👍🇬🇬
Also in the news, pub landlords believe that everyone should pay a subscription to protect pubs, whether they drink there or not.
fkin hell jon who stole your razor...? lol

"Sorry we don't allow door to door salesmen in this area, Goodbye."
Hi Chilli ..... For those of us that do not watch the Television 'RUBBISH' that is broadcast theses days, why should they have to pay a compulsory TV tax. That is no different than the DVLA saying you have to pay a road tax although you don't own a car ..... DOHHHH !! ..... Whoever this guy is that made this statement has obviously got a couple of parts missing !!
Road tax is just a fee to use the roads that goes to the scum government.
Road building and maintenance come from the poll tax.

What a runt. My children never watch the BBC 27 and 35 and never have watched the BBC, To put a tax on those that are working or those that own a house would be a disgrace beyond any reason. It would lead to civil unrest greater than the Poll tax. Also, they went after the wrong person - a Lawyer - in Scotland and threatened him with heavies. He is suing them and if successful it could turn into something bigger than the post office scandle. Students were fined and they used to say they had proof when they did not. Next big money maker for solicitors coming up.
