Really like videos with aquariums in the background. I watch the aquariums will listening to the presenter talk. Thanks for the information on the Matala Mat. It is new to me. Toying with the idea of setting up a sump on a slightly raised indoor pond. Cheers.

That's cool it looks like when it get clogged a little, the flow will just divert so it should last way longer. Great idea!!

The matalamat works well and definitely aids in the longevity of your filter floss. Good reviewJoel..

I have been enjoying the shorter videos, easier to throw in to a playlist to save for when I put a sump on it. The live streams are awesome for a more nuanced discussion about the topic plus shenanigans. Have seen this stuff and that is a great idea of how to use it, looks like it'll give way more biological surface than the diffuser.

Even in your planned videos you make me laugh. "Is this going to have be a quick edit?" Great info about the filters, I'm going to go start my Saturday morning water changes.

I'm looking at this stuff as a screen for the overflow to keep critters from getting into the sump. Lost my kuhli loaches when they got into the sump, still have a couple swordtails living in the sump that found their way there as fry.

I use this in my pond filter. It lasts for many years, going on 12 and no break down.

Wow, 12 years? Have you removed it from the filter? I ask because in my experience, the low density black mat starts to lose it's rigidity after about 4 years (any portion of it that is totally submerged will go noodle limp). The Super High density Grey mat starts to deteriorate after about 3 years. Any portion of it that is above the water line will still be rigid (like- new), but any portion of it that is fully submerged will deteriorate.
Still a great filter media, but it does break down over time and will need to be replaced.

Good video of how to best use the Matala Mat. Sorry for missing your videos for the last 2 months. I've been down on the southern border, called up for NG. No cell phone or internet access down there.

Cool beans, new product, looking forward to seeing how it performs and what you think about it after you've used it for awhile.

Hmm, matala mats remind me a little of those god awful pot scrubbbies I see frugal fish keepers utilize. However, matala appears far more elegant and efficient, from my point of view. Your application has made me even more intrigued by this material. Thank You!

Placing it vertically makes a lot more sense than placing it horizontally. I like the idea of using finer filter floss sandwiched between the mat for mechanical filtration.

FYI, Drs. Foster & Smith has Matala Mat for 50% off right now. www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=15799

Nice! vertical is the way to go. And large particles wont gunk it up, cause they sinks to the bottom of the sump oppose to resting on the filter be it laying horizontal causing it to clog, allowing you to change it less. :)

Why not use all 4 types of Matala mat, instead of filter floss? No future expenses, once installed.
Have you used any other of the 4 besides the black course mat?

Interesting. I don’t have sumps but it makes sense. It’s how I load my HOBs
    Question though. The white filter-floss,
You use a pad cut to size and / or the fiber-fill fluffy floss? I use both in some filters, sometimes. Just wondering what your thoughts are.
Good morning and have a great weekend.
(Please don’t leave your camera in a hotel room and don’t carry a backpack behind you on your back while overseas. I carried copies of my passport on me and kept the original in a safe at the hotel. Be safe and have a wonderful trip ! )

I use the cut to fit for sure. Never seems to be worth it to use the loose.

Maybe as the front portion, you'd still need foam on the back end though.

How does it compare to low density Poret foam? Seems similar to me.
