  • The first of two '63 Sportwins I bought from Ron Baker at Constantine 2020. He owned this one for several years and ran it very little. did some work to it but never a full service since it was a decent runner already. He said it was a very strong runner when he ran it. We'll see how it does on the boat this season now that it has been gone completely through.

    Yea that's a nice one, I've got one just like it, my driveshaft and lower Bush was shot, luckily bought a blown up 62 Jon.for parts, have you ever tried to repair a drive shaft due to bushing wear and seal groove? Think turning it down .030 lathe and tig up turn back down would work, think brazing to soft, may be worth a try due to finding a replacement one.thanks for posting

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not yet attempted a drive shaft repair like that, although O have considered it. I have every reason to believe it would work well. The biggest thing would be to get the bearing and sealing surfaces back to a suitable surface finish without an OD grinder or at least a tool post grinder on the lathe. I believe it could be achieved with careful use of emery paper and the use of the lathe. I do not currently have a good TIG welder or a decent way to apply stainless steel filler metal back on the drive shaft. I have heard of a little people using a stainless steel Speedi Sleeve to repair them also. I have not personally done this either. I would be interested in seeing how this fix worked long term. I agree that braze is too soft. I thing wleding would be a perfect fix though. Thanks for watching!

    These are some of the best running outboards ever....The addition of the bigger wrist pins/needle bearings, along with the thermostat really made the almost perfect. It's too bad about the small gearcases, wish the lower driveshaft bushings were replaceable...Oh well. Hmm, have often wondered about what happens when the points cams get accidentally flipped over...I'm with you, would have thought this would kill the spark. I guess the cam ramps must be close to identical on both sides. It's too bad someone chose to repaint this one, how is the engine cover? This one will definitely be great for everyday use.

      Yes, definitely. This is the pinnacle of the OMC 10hp powerhead. I personally like the Jetstream cowl style and that paired with the best of the best built 10bp powerhead it is a great little outboard. I completely agree about the small gearcase. I don't care for the 4-bolt case on the 10hp either. It is truly too bad that once the 10hp reached this point, it was exit stage left, and on to the 9.5 turtle top. Not a terrible motor, but its no 10hp in my opinion. It would be great had they made the lower drive shaft bushings replaceable. At least it is the same upper gearcase as the 5.5 and 7.5hp so there are LOTS of good used ones around. I have rarely found one in a 5.5 or 7.5 with that bushing worn out.
      The profile of the points cam is very different from the leading to the trailing sides of cam. Flipping it over makes the point open very slowly and close abruptly. This would make the timing extremely sensitive to proper adjustment to get it to run properly. I am very surprised that it ran so well before. This proved to me that they can run that way, but I certainly don't recommend it. LOL.
      The paint on this motor is not fuel resistant at all either. I will be stripping the spray paint off of it. The cover doesn't look bad at all. It has some later decals on it and some earlier decals on it. I may remove those and make some new vinyl decals closer to original for it. It doesn't look bad though so.i may just leave it as is. This will make a great everyday runner. Thanks for watching, Don!

    Great sounding motor JR. What is it about those stile motors that they seem to run so smooth. The 10's and 18's all seem to be very smooth running. A fellow gave me a 62 like that but she was to far gone....sat outside til it was ruined but I have a 67 18 HP that sure isn't pretty but runs VERY nice after the usual tune up. Thanks for another interesting vid.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I really like these Jetstream cowl Evinrudes. They do run nice and smooth whether the 5.5, 10, 18 or 40. Too bad about the '62. I have two '67 Fastwins and both were ugly when I got them. They are my go to motors now. I had a third one that I sold and it was a stellar runner as well. Thanks for watching!

    John, I have a chance to get one of these motors everything looks good on the outside. Could you tell me a bit of the good, the bad and the ugly of these motors? Thanks for you demo.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure. The '61-'63 OMC 10hps were, in my opinion, the best 10hp motors OMC ever built with the '63 being the best of the best. The 9.9s are great too, but that's a different animal. The '63 has the largest wristpins and needle bearings on the wristpins of all of them. The biggest things to look out for with these motors is even compression, if you can pull the bypass covers and check for cylinder and piston scoring, that's a plus. The gearcase is the weakness of these post '57 10hps. The 4-bolt gearcase is kind of fragile for a 10hp motor and is very susceptible to internal damage if any water get in and the motor gets used that way. If you can pull the drain plug in the gearcase a d check the oil for water that's another plus. If it has old oil and no water, that is the way I prefer to find them. Carb kits, ignition parts, and water water pump parts are all still available new so it can be fully serviced and put back to dialy runner status without a problem. Thanks for watching!

      It does sound like it will be a strong runner. Ron said it was a strong one when he ran it. I don't know which parts you need for your QD-23. Have you looked on Marineengine.com? You may even find used parts online after you look up the part numbers. Good luck getting it going. Thanks for watching!

      @@Vintageoutboardreviver If there are missing linkage parts you are not able to make yourself, in many cases you are better off trying to find another used carb that has the needed parts with it. Many of the packing nuts are common among other carburetors. Knobs for these 60s Evinrudes are some of the toughest ones to find for me.

    So it sounds like I should buy OMC parts whenever possible? Is that what you normally do? I don’t like doing a job twice.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I try to buy enough to keep some stock for projects in the queue. Some things have become harder to get with the covid shutdowns halting production for a while. I start looking a bit earlier than I did to replenish lately. I also buy parts motors so I have some spare non-consumable parts. I don't like doing a job twice either. Thanks for watching!

    Dialing in the motor when it is cold doesn't that change when it is warm out it needs more fuel now in the cold?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they will all need some fine adjustments again in the warmer weather. Dialing them in when it is this cold does prove they will run well in warmer temperatures. In most cases they will run even somewhat better in warmer weather. It makes the fine tuning during boating season go very easily. Thanks for watching!

      Are you talking about the one that would go inside the boat that the clamp screws would bear against? I have one that came on a boat I bought. They may still be available. I'm sure they show up on Ebay now and then. I have made them too, but be careful if it doesn't have pockets for the clamp.screw pads. If they are just bearing against a metal plate, they don't hold.like they do if they're against wood. Thanks for watching!
