They all sound great..my favorite Sabian line is the Evolution but I switched to Paiste a year ago and haven't looked back. Those Sabian Legacies do sound nice.
This is EXACTLY the kind of cymbal video I look for all the time, where I can accurately tell the sound of a line and brand vs the others. Love the sound of the Paiste Signatures myself. If you continue making videos like this, it'd be great if you could also do one with some "lesser known" brands, like the Bosphorus, TRX, and UFIP cymbals!
Paiste sounds better in my opinion, blends well with the kit with nicer sustain 👌🏻
I am a Sabian guy, but after a lot of trial and error, I finally chose a 22” Zildjian K as my ride cymbal.
Paistes sound clean and crisp
Zildjians sound warm and lush
Sabian sounds dark and complex
This debate about the 'best sounding brand' is pointless.
Indeed, I concur with this criteria!
I agree eith the last part of the statement. Although I wouldn't call the Sabians that are being demo'd here dark. They were the brightest and most tinny sounding ones imo. But then again, it's just that... opinion. And it all comes down to what works for your ear.
I personally choose my preference based on what my drum hero is having, and that's what i go for.. because all of them are great
Agreed, I hear it that way too. The K Dark series are like that. The A series are clean bright and crisp, somewhat like the Paistes. I think it's good to have a dark rich set like the Zildjian K or Sabians, and a bright set like the Paiste's or Zildjian A-series. The brighter Zildjian A and Paiste's aren't soooo expensive, at least.
Paiste, all day. I like the others too, but nothing is more pure, warm and as crisp at the same time as Paiste. You can get, bright, crisp and warm from different brands, but nothing all together in one cymbal, like Paiste!
Sabian are better
Wow they all sound great. I tend to buy sabian just because they are Canadian, but I’d happily make a setup out of all these lines.
Paiste all the way!
Paiste !!! switched from Zildjian last year
me too
Me to, 2 years ago. And man I was sooo wrong all this years. Paiste are soooo superior.
I'm a Paiste Guy, but here the sabian wins. Beautiful sounds.
Paiste! They have a constant note! Others have some dissonant sounds!
Paiste je i otac i majka
👍👍
The Sabians are nothing but dissonant sounds!
@@c.r.blankenship9040 Ok I love Sabians too but there is a difference. Some people love the sound of different overtones and that can be nice, but someone loves absolute pitch. It's the same thing when you tuning your drums. I don't want to say one is better than the other, it's just a subjective feeling
@@stefanaleksic4113 Paiste and Sabian are my fav
would probably go for the paistes, if money would be infinite, but they all sound nice. The groove in the beginning was very nice!
Ks all day long. Not as much bell on the ride as the other two, so maybe not the best choice for heavier stuff, but the overall tone is much nicer and super versatile.
All sound great for different applications
Paiste for Rock
Zildjian for Jazz
Sabian for R&B / Soul
That sums it up perfectly
i'm usually a pretty mixed bag of opinions...but those Legacy hi hats sound a bit paper-y?
100% agree
Nothing can touch Paiste in every way.
paiste is so crisp and clean they can play any genre the best
@Rex R Yes sir!!!!
Timeless and the best of all
@Rex R me too! i used to use zildjian i switched to paiste 2002 sound is so beautiful
Lol
I've played almost all Zildjians for decades. But until this video, I didn't realize just how very unique a K Custom ride sound is. (I'm not sure if I like it, or not, but you can identify the K Custom Ride blindfolded.) I've been in love with the sound of Paiste Dark Crisp hats for 12 years now -- ever since Chester Thompson turned me on to them. I will probably fill out my new cymbal set with Paiste Signatures. It's not just the hats that have that special sound!
They all make great cymbals but right now I’m on the Sabian train. Played Zildjian all my life but I’m liking what the other side of the border is doing. HHX and AAX are my preferences.
I would use the Sabian Hats, the Paiste crashes and the Zildjian Ride.
The Zildjians just sound way more musical, but they're all high end stuff so it'll always sound great. I never get along well with Paiste, their craftsmen for sure are amazing, but their alloys are so one dimensional. I've found they only make good heavier cymbals but heavier cymbals are no way near as musical as thin cymbals. B20 all the way for me, and the Ks sound pucker
You'd probably like Paiste Formula 602 Modern Essentials. They're thin, medium bright, and sit in a mix perfectly. And I believe they are B20
@@johnnybgoode2333 the thinner ones yeah but then look at the price of them. For that kind of money I could be looking at a Sabian Artisan or K Constantinople which are much darker and complex. If I want a medium bright sound I could choose an HHX, a regular K or an Instanbul Xist
@@johnnybgoode2333 Steve Goold used 602 Modern Essentials when he toured with Sarah Bareilles, and his kit sounded wonderful. I'm a Zildjian guy, but I'm not above admitting that Paiste's kick-ass.
I am, however, above saying anything nice about those Sabians. They sounded horrible.
@Carlosss best B8 cymbals ever. Put many B20 cymbals in shame specially those K crahs who sound boomy and can't find 2 who married together. I played zildjian for 20 years and my 19 K dark crash sound lower then my 20". Those cymbals are a joke. don't getting me started on the durability and quality. Zildjian is not Zildjian anymore like the 80's and 90's. I switched to paiste and nerver looked back. And 2002's B8 obliterated A Customs b20's. And yes paiste B8 are nothing like other brands B8's. And who said b20's are more musical and better then b8's? Trust your ears not brand marketing. Trust me I have been there.
Man you have 602 formula, 602 Modern essentials, signature tradicionals, Masters, all thin and b20. What are you talking about?? What you think Steve Jordan Plays??? 😅
Out of the ones played here I like the Zildjian hats and the paiste crashes/ride. The Sabina and Zildjian rides have a nicer bell but the paiste ride has a nicer body and that’s the most important thing for me.
You really can't go wrong with paiste. Especially that ride. I've been getting really into sabian lately and I'm living those legacy crashes
I teach jazz and tell my students to watch the hi-hat only -- and to click their fingers on every "chic" (close) of that instrument. The ride cymbal merely makes the hi-hat's clap "purr".
I would definitely choose a set of cymbals from Zildjian K or Sabian HHX series
Paiste signature crashes are just the best
it has always been Zildjian for me, never heard a Paiste that I liked except for 1 2002 ride that I had to choose between when I bought my first ride. I went for the A medium. But now I'm Swiss, I think I'd have to grow to love Paiste.
Paiste for the win 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
i was a longtime paiste signature fan, but those zildjians just sound better in the mix to my ears
I would think that listing the models used within each demo would make sense, yes?
Paiste is The Winner For Me Incredible Crisp Versatile Cymbals!
Sabian and Zildjian are Great Also
Zildjian hi-hats, Paiste ride and the Sabian crashes are what do it for me, haha!!
I love all 3! Thanks!
For me paiste has best for most clarity and clean sound but zildjian best for slightly more dirty.
A lot depends on the music you play. I like a lighter crisper sound. The K overtones are darker than the 2002s I play now. Live vs. recording can also influence the choices. I also found 2002’s are more consistent. If I crack a cymbal I can buy a new Paiste and it will sound like the broken one.
I dont know why they chose the Paiste Mellow crashes and ride for this demonstration. They should have chosen the Full crashes and ride for a better sound. I liked the Sabian cymbals but not enough to change from my Paiste Signatures.
Yes. I have full crashers and they are magnificent.
Paiste is the only one you can buy unheard and be sure it sounds like the ones in the video. I have heard many clunker Z and Sabs. Never a clunker Paiste.
What are the weight of the cymbals
The Paiste cymbals sound more musical, varied sounds & glassy overtones
That BG snare though!
1. Zildjian
2. Zildjian
3. Paiste
Here you have 2nd, 3rd and 4th place after Meinl
Is Sabian the best for the price?
Maybe my ears are just trained for Paiste or something, because for me it's no contest.
One thing for sure, for my ears nothing comes close to paiste 15" dark energy hihats. Someday hope to own a pair.there very expensive but listen to that sound. Unbelievable.!
I play Paiste predominantly but all sound great here.
For me generally it's Sabian for hihats, Zildjian for ride cymbals, Paiste for crash cymbals, and Meinl for when I finally stop kidding myself and come back to my senses😆 kidding, just kidding don't flame me plz 😂
Same kinda logic for me; Zildjian for hats and crashes, Paiste for rides, Sabian for crashes and then since we're going there Meinl for hats and chinas and then Istanbul Agop makes a bunch of cool splashes and effects
Paiste more acoustic and consistent, but I prefer Sabian, more balanced for my style
Paiste top
Wish the mix was better so I could actually hear the difference in quality
Never been a massive fan of Paiste because they seem to have a pitch, I prefer Zildjian and Sabian for their less pristine sound, I like crashes to be brash, noisy and less defined in that respect, whereas Paiste top it for the hats and ride for their clarity and cut.
Daniel Coyle Have you ever really played Paiste? I’ve used K, and A Zil, HH, and AX Sabina, and neither come close to the clearing, definition, cut, and Paiste are CONSISTENT! Paiste is using B8 alloy in many of their lines, and still record far better than the other 2, even without the use of DAW
Honestly, that's why I'm less fond, I've played their B8 cymbals like 2002s, B12 Signatures and the B20 602s, of all of them I prefer the sound of B20, but there's something about how Paiste make theirs that makes them too precise, too much of a defined pitch, I like the way the HH and K lines have a darker wash with no real clear pitch to them.
@@Coylee91 I'm the same as you man, I adore good ol' handmade turkish cymbals, don't matter what brand. Some people love paiste exactly for what we don't like them tho. It's all taste after all. Have a good one.
@@Coylee91 That's what I love about Paiste, the definition and precision it's unrivaled in that. The only thing is it doesn't work well with Jazz or soft music. It would be perfect to have both Paiste and a dark be it Zildjian or Sabian for versatility.
@@bubinga_basher, I 💯% agree.
I think the closest to a good Paiste cymbal is Meinl Pure Alloys.
Paiste for sure but to be fair, the comparaison should have been done with a full set of Dark Energy cymbals and not a mix of series ...
miss Meinl ;) will combine a 14" Paiste Dark Energy Hi Hat with Meinl Traditional Medium Thin Crashes and a Byzance Dark Ride .... Have to save some Money :D (already own a Byzance 16 Trd. Med Thin Crash and a 22" Dark Ride)
Zildjian K for me 😁
Sabian was best but I'm sure a hand hammered cymbal sounds better.
Sabian hats, zildjian rides and pastie crashes in that sound test
Why is it that recording technology--analog and (especially) digital--never captures the sound of ride or crash cymbal as it sounds live and in person (regardless of brand)? I especially miss the sizzling sound of the ride cymbal floating above the solid walking 4/4 of the bass. Some of us never regressed to acceptance of a "rock beat" (mostly "soft soft LOUD" instead of "ding ding ding ding" with the hi -hat clap on every other ding). That first example (Paiste) shows me nothing. What's with the dormant hi-hat?
PAISTE IS OBVIOUSLY #1 AND ON SABIAN & ZILDIJAN CAN PLAY ROCK, PAPER & SCISSORS FOR 2ND & 3RD PLACE BLIND FOLD YOO EYES COULDN'T TELL A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM BOTH SAME D.N.A. IN THE MAKING OF THEIR CYMBALS
For me the kick drum has too much bass frequencies in the mix, it's harder to hear the cymbals characteristics.
Sabian HHX would have been a better choice for this comparison. The Legacy's are too dark compared to the K's and P. Signatures. But good comparison video.
why is it that when ever someone demo's a ride cymbal all you can hear if the bell and the snare drum?
Let's come up with a consensus on what the difference is without using value judgements, just pure description. Maybe the more folks we have way in on this, the closer to a general theory we'll have.
To my ear:
The Ks are obviously lower in pitch, warmest sounding, quickly blending into a midrange wash which had the effect of making them sound short decayed when played with the track.
The Sabians had a really outrageous attacky sound to them. Aggressive and trashy with quick decay (relative to the other two sets). It sounds like the equivalent of audio fireworks. Seemed like they might be really fun to hit based off the way they seemed to bloom. EDIT: they also seemed to have the biggest pitch differentials in the lot.
The Paiste set...I guess clean would be the term? They definitely sounded "up there" to me. I can't really describe it. It's like the cymbals don't have much low-end swimming around in the sound vs. the Ks. I think they had the longest apparent decay when in the mix? These sounded the most to me like what imagine cymbals are supposed to sound like, which from a composers standpoint would be pretty ideal, (I imagine.)
Idk y'all what do you think.
Easy, Sabian all the way for me. That K ride was nice though!
In the most respectful way possible, where the heck did all of these Paiste players come from? For the last 20 years, it’s been either Sabian or Zildjian. And most recently, Meinl as players are starting to prefer a darker, more dry tone.
On a serious note, you can’t go wrong with Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste, or Meinl. It’s all preference in this art form. Often times when players are looking to switch, it’s because they’re playing the wrong line for the music type that they perform. Trust, each company has a line of cymbals to fit your style. But give me Sabian any day of the week. Their HHX and HHX Legacy line play beautifully.
The Sabian ride and ride bell for me. The paste for the 2 cymbal crashes. And hi hat closed playing Sabian or paste either for me and hi hat fully open playing for me Zildjian.
It's all in your ear...pick the cymbals that fit your needs and wants...a mixed bag man...
How did you switch cymbals so quick?
Lmao, good one.
IN this group .... even without headphones ... Sabian are last, sound thin, fizzy and like cheap tin pots. The top place is a split between Paiste and Zildjian ... the latter are darker on the Rides which I prefer, I give it to Zildjian for the tone of the Crash as well. I grew up playing Zildjians so perhaps my ear is well attuned to that frequency ...
i like zildjian
Just found out today that Sabian is technically a Zildjian company. The founder was the brother of the owner of Zildjian at the time who was a descendant heir to the original founder of the 1600's Avedis Zildjian. Weird how 2 of the 3 most popular cymbal brands(nothing against Meinl) are actually from Zildjian. And here Paiste still kicks their butt. Kinda sad how one cymbal brand is so much better than the other. We don't see that in drums or guitars.
do a sound like the rev (Jimmy Sullivan) busting the bank!! PLEASE
I still prefer Sabian og Zildjian. Subscribing.
The paistes sound good, but you cant beat K series dark crashes.. the cymbals sound better when they are paired up with their proper counterparts. You can have a drumset with all top of the line cymbals from any brand, but if they arent carefully picked out to compliment each other, the setup just wont sound that great.
Im not a drummer, but my ears choose Sabian
Paiste all the way. Sabians sound somehow thin & cheap.
Paistes sound good to me on analog tape, but in the digital realm they sound too harsh to my ears. As good a reason as any to go back to tape. Tape to music is heat to cooking.
For decades I was thinking that there is no quality difference between analog and (uncompressed) digital sound, until I heard the direct comparison on a pair of 40000€ Backes & Müller speakers with reel tape vs digital from hdd. It blew my mind away! Granted, the tape had a very slight hiss to it, but the sound clarity and tone richness was immediately evident and somehow much more pleasant to the ear. If I ever get a proper sound system at home, I'll sure go back to the glory of classic analog.
They should’ve used Zildjian A Customs. The most colorful and expressive cymbals made.
A Customs are the most overrated cymbals by far lol. They sound closer to breaking glass than they do usable cymbals. The only good cymbals Zildjian makes are the Constantinoples, and I still wouldn't take them over most Sabians, or just about anything made in Turkey
A customs are so bad it hurts. I had a 16" and 18" crash. Worst sounding crashes ever. Boomy and over the top bright, with zero warmth and crazy overtones. You want bright, try Some Paiste Signatures or some 2002's.
Aren't Paiste's over the top bright? I notice how Paiste players hate A Customs because they're comparable to the brightness of Paiste's lol.
Ahhhh so this is where all the Paiste fanboys are hiding...
Sabian, Paiste or Zildjian? Can I choose all?
Nothing wrong with Paiste it's just not for me, and I've just never liked Sabian at all. There's just something about all Sabian cymbals that I just don't like, Zildjian's just the one for me.
i have the exact same opinion. Sabians more expensive symbols have a distinguishing sound they make that still sounds sort of like a cheaper cymbal. they still sound good dont get me wrong... but the zildjians have the cleaner sound imo
Sabians sound like Robert Zildjian's animosity for his brother
Paiste Ride(that bell!!!) and Small Crash, Zildj for Hats and Big Crash. Sabian is just subpar here.
Zildjian for me
Personally I'd use Zildjian hi-hat and crash and Paiste ride. Sabian sounds too bright for my taste
Hihat: paiste
Ride: sabian
Crash: sabian
Its a tie between Zildjian & Paiste. The Sabians weren't bad either. Can't go wrong with any of them. I guess they don't carry Meinl ?
I like the Sabian
Les K sont les meilleures dans le mix, peut etre que le choix aurait été plus difficile face à des 602
Zildjian . But I still like the A's better than the K's
#1 Paiste
#2 Zildjian
#3 Sabian
Zildjian and Paiste sounded best to me, except I didn't like the Paiste hats. Sorry, something was off with the Sabians
Paiste na minha opinião.
Paiste all the way
The Sabians are way too bright and tinny for my personal preference. I'd take the ZIldjians as my 1st choice. Paiste would be a distant 2nd. Although, I'd go with Zildjian A customs because I play in a rock band. Although I'd like a K ride.
I prefer Meinl myself, but here Sabian wins.
Sensacional.
У меня 2002 серия Paiste звучит как-то поинтереснее
Paiste
K Custom Dark no comparison
Paiste 👌
Zildjian/Sabian/Paiste
