My daughter and I love birds,,,we don't have Hummigbirds in Australia, but are blessed with so many other species. Every morning the Rainbow Lorikeets wake me up on sunrise,,,that's if I am not up working before that. All the best from Australia (small space veggie gardening channel) Marty & Karin
Hi Marty :) Are you from North Queensland..We are down south in Tasmania we also have wonderful birds here., though its cold we get a lot of sunshine so many birds chirp early in the morning. I've become a bird lover later in life and fascinated by them..beautiful intelligent creatures they are..Happy bird watching mate..
I went out today and bought me a new hummingbird feeder, and found an old decorative pretty glass feeder and filled it with the sugar water too. looking forward to hanging them in my garden. Hubby wanted me to put one in the front yard so he could watch them. O told him hey they are for my garden to help with pollination. So I get to watch them. haha
I just got a new hummingbird feeder from Dollar Tree and I also cleaned another one that I haven't used in a long time there was a lot of mold on it I made this recipe today I can't wait to see if more hummingbirds come
Robbie, I want to tell you thank you for your hummingbirds. You gave me information that I needed to know. I had a feeder up and birds left because of ant invasion. I'm hoping they will be happy with me by helping them.
I know this video has been put out last year but this is my very first time I actually just bought a hummingbird feeder todaythis makes me so happy to get this advice I'm subscribing that way I can learn more I've been wanting to attract hummingbirds for a very long time thank you so much for the information look forward to learning more.
I've had the two feeders up (and it's a very open location) for 2 weeks now. Cleaned and refilled twice now, just in case. So far the hummers have not appeared. It's Toronto. I've read that they usually show up on Mother's Day week-end but it's been cold. Maybe they'll arrive for Victoria Day week-end. I guess once they've found the feeders, they'll be around constantly. Last summer they showed up when the Crocosmia flowered. The feeders are hanging from metal shepherd's crooks. I smeared WD40 on the poles. See if that keeps the ants away. The feeders have ant moats but if the water evaporates, there's nothing. I've made sure to go out almost every day because I've got suet/seed hangers and the birds are so enthusiastically eating this stuff, I need to refill every 48 hours. I'm hoping they stick around to eat pests.
If the WD40 works, it's not to poison the ants. It's to make climbing the pole an unfriendly exercise. If this doesn't work, I'll have to figure out something else. There are European Fire Ants in the garden. They eat the Cucumber beetle larvae and the Cabbage butterfly caterpillars. And everything else they can chomp. They wipe out the local ant species. Their sting (yes, sting) is more painful than a wasp's. And it itches for three weeks afterwards. I got one last summer. Got one caught between my ankle and the sandal strap. I can't say as I could blame the critter and they are not willy nilly stinging me. Only when threatened. I do no dig/no till gardening and the soil is full of beneficial living creatures like centipedes, beetles, spiders, red velvet mites, etc. I don't know what impact the ants will have on the beneficials. These things showed up last year. Maybe birds will eat them. They are not tiny ants and they wander all over the place. This year there is one nest. Last year at this time there were three. Progress? They move their nests around so as to be closer to food sources.
Hi Robbie love all your videos. How long can we leave freshly made sugar water in the feeders? Mine is mostly in the shade, gets a little bit of morning sun. Have it hanging under my lemon tree.
In the shade mainly I would say 3-4 days...should be fine. IF they do not finish it within those days, put in less next time and store the rest in the fridge, thanks, Robbie
Great video nice tips i just got one from tge dollar store. But i dont want to put it under a tree becuse they say that in direct sunlight. It spoils there food.
DebbyAbqNM your right they arrived end Feb it got down to 28 degrees twice and snowed the 2nd week of March I had quite a few now only a couple they left but I had lots of hummingbirds last year can't figure out what happened this time
In nature, hummingbirds eat flower nectar for energy and bugs for protein. Flower nectar is 21% to 23% sucrose. Everything I have researched have recommended 1 to 4, and no more. The Hummingbird Projects all say, ratio of 4:1, and though more sugar MAY not hurt the birds, a 3:1 ratio of sugar WILL spoil much faster and could be to syrupy if too much sugar is added. I personally will stick to 4:1, thanks, Robbie
DebbyAbqNM thanks for your reply I'm in Tennessee and I live the country I missed them when they left in the fall now I have a couple hummingbirds here that stayed it's strange how they just disappeared end of March
Thank you every year i would get the liquid from lowes or home depot but i read it is not good for the hummingbirds. I have 12 hummindbirds each year. I noticed one was too fat.
Let's just say, it must be good what I am doing as we went from just a couple to 100's, and boy are they costing me now, but they pollinate the garden, and eat little bugs, so they are worth it to have around, plus I truly enjoy them, thanks, Robbie
I love the hummers , I have been setting out feeders for years but never had that many at once. They seem to catch each other away. Any thoughts on that would be helpful. I live in South jersey
I got a feder 3 weeks ago and all was going great until 2 days ago. Then bees started feeding from it. I took it down yesterday because I couldn't stop the bees. The feeder is supposed to be bee proof. Amy other suggestions?
No hummers yet. But I'm diligently cleaning the feeders. The ant moat dried out the other day and two black ants found their way into the sugar solution and drowned. Ooops. The male Redwing blackbird complained yesterday when the suet feeder was empty. Seriously. His vocalization changed once I loaded the hanger. The bird has expectations. Usually if I'm around he doesn't come in close. But yesterday he was only a very few feet away. Getting up front and personal. Sheesh. As to using masking tape with tomatoes and peppers, I have a roll of Frog tape and have been using that since some other older stuff just got unstuck. So far so good. I think the advantage is when a person is using bamboo poles because other materials slip. The garden guy for the local phone in show said to not use wooden stakes for tomatoes because mice climb them. I've always used bamboo or the green covered metal poles and have had a difficult time tieing tomatoes but the tape works. :) Great information.
I have two feeders and just started to get hummingbirds this weekend. I am in a cool area in Canada. Is it okay to leave the nectar for a day or two or should i be cleaning every single day? They don't drink very much in a day. Hoping to attract more, but I am struggling with waste! I do love how tame the hummingbirds are though! They eat right next to me while i am outside playing fetch with my dogs and have no issue with the dogs going near them :D I already make my nectar the way you do, just not sure how often I should be switching it? I usually only see one or two birds at a time and have two feeders... OH Also, I was looking for new feeders this year and saw ones that wre more decorative and not red, is it the red that attracts them or would they find the food in a more decorative feeder? Thanks so much!!
You are cold there, so you should be able to leave the feeder up for days, I would say, about 4 days, and just don't fill it, keep the pre-made in the fridge, should even last in there over a week. Good question on the color of feeders! I put one up that was adorable, it was like a Lighthouse, BUT the hummingbirds did not go to it, maybe because of the colors it was, more blue and white and gray. They did not try or recognize it as a feeder. So, I'd just keep that in mind. IF you want to try something very different, try hanging the more decorative one right near the other one that they know, this way one bird may try it and the others will follow, just a thought! Thanks, Robbie
Robbie and Gary thank you! I just did my feeders bc I had some ants today and within about 5 mins my favorite little guy showed up 😍 i can hear others now but the one always stops on the lilac bushes and watches me watch him 💗 i love birds even have them as pets, but my grandma took her tricks with her 😢 so I'm happy you popped into my recommended! Have a great day!
02:48 '...they come in my house and go out'.... GREEN with ENVY! I'm getting my exacto blade and cutting all of my screens out! [Not really, but I AM the type who would pull such a stunt!]
I found a pkg of boomer cups at dollar tree. They have one space for booze and outside for mixer. So I put hole in liquor space and made hole and ran coated wire. Made a coil and put thru hole. Made s hol on each end. Water in outer hole.

I look forward to getting a humming bird feeder especially after watching your video on them.

Can I refrigerate any nectar that I don't use? Forgive me if you have already answered this question.
Yes, you can make extra and just keep it in the fridge for a week or more, thanks, Robbie

If it is bee proof they can not get to the sugar water. Wait a few days and try putting the feeders back

How do you keep the bees from the feeder? No problems with ants but bees are all over the feeding port 😖
You will need a better hummingbird feeder with good bee guards, thanks Robbie
❤️❤️❤️
I made an ant guard
