As someone who grew up riding old school jet ski's, including a stand up ski, I'd absolutely love to give one of these things a try. It's really too bad that they're insanely expensive. I could buy a new jet ski (heck, two or three used ones) for the price of one of these boards. I can't help but feel that they should probably be a fifth the price that they are.
I hear you. Perhaps a lesson at a nearby school / demo center is a good start … or keep an eye out and see if you can get to know whoever is flying by! On our lake we’ve had 10+ friends and neighbors flying
Great video! I actually tried an E-foil last spring and it was a blast! My question is, how did you get the video shot starting at 5:19? That's a sick shot and btw a great overall edit!
We Kiteboard and almost everyone has a foil for lite wind days, The Crazy Price is the Efoil problem and they look like they could get a bit boring after awhile but lots of fun at first Im sure
Thank You for wearing a helmet. Too many TH-cam videos show non helmeted riders. I was clipped in the head with the sharp wing during a crash last month, which required 11 staples to close a inch and a half gash
@@WakeThief Looking forward. I just took my second lesson and had a half dozen brief runs on foil. My previous experience is windsurfing and just two efoil lessons. As I'm sure you're heard, start on a big board. My first session was on a 200+litre monster, the second 145l. And before that spend an hour or two with the wing on dry land, just to get a feel. You'll be flying in no time. enjoy!
@@DavidFoxDotCom I was just watching a video from Damien Leroy's channel that he posted today and he mentions getting out the wing on dry land and working with it. I used to windsurf too, back in the late '80s. I still have all my gear, an O'Brien 12 foot board and a 9 foot O'Brien that I bought back in '88 and a 6 M sail. Good times
rent Lift in San Diego a few times now. I bought (Australia boost - my brain is mush and I forget - 'edrive'?), anyway I bought it end of last season. (small lake in nepa) and played with it with my 5mm. even with 5mm I was afaid of a cardiac issue in front of my daughters, so I didn't play long. very excited to get this season going and hopeful get better at wing foiling (the goal). I don't think I can pump at my age but would love to ride the wakes. btw get Evolve Bamboo GTR AT... great fun carving... just trying to find an airline friendly battery for my daughters and I during layover. I enjoy your videos. great work, great editing, great info!
Thanks so much for your kind words. Are you think foil drive? We really enjoyed it last year. A great balance between what we love with efoiling and classic foiling, blended into one. If I can ever help, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Wakethief@icloud.com
Your video made me check out traditional foiling, but I didn't find anything on water take-offs. Like, when you crash and have to get. going again. Is that not a thing, lol?
@@WakeThief It would be nice if it were possible to combine the two. A lightweight efoil that has just enough power to get you off the water, and assist your pumping enough that your range is far greater than a classic foiler
I just started surfing in the last year and this looks way more accessible to be as a Canadian with many lakes around, but not to many ocean swells to catch. Just 1 question I haven't seen addressed in any video. What happens when you fall? With either the efoil or classic, how do you get back on and continue the ride?
Swim to a nearby dock and dock start it (run and jump onto board) or it’s a long swim home. Most people get towed on a classic foil from a jet ski or boat.
The feeling of flight is something else. I’m probably at 500 hours of foiling and just yesterday I had session behind the boat that will live on in my mind for the rest of my life. The efoil makes the sport so much more accessible … good luck on your journey. Please stay tuned. We’re not done with efoils!
I think that E-Foiling is a lot more fun for people who do not want to spend hours learning a new thing and who just want to relax and have fun, while classic foiling is for people who want to put in the effort and have a workout while having fun.
Can you learn pump the the Efoil and after you get the hang on a Efoil can you dock start a traditional foil or will it be hours and days to learn to dock start
Efoiling is a great way to learn to foil … I’ve seen people who were great efoilers learn very quickly the first time they classic foiled. However dock starting and pumping are different animals. No doubt efoiling will make it easier but it will still take 10-20 hours of practice to figure out … but it’s so much fun and so worth the investment of time
@@WakeThief So another words you can’t practice your pumping skills on this board I thought big front wing get the board on foil then shut off motor and start pumping skills can this be done
Great toy but the over $10K price tag makes them a very niche product. Hopefully, the manufacturers will modernize their production lines, making more automated, so prices can be brought down. I imagine we have a large enough population dreaming about the product to make the investments justifiable.
Thanks for the comment. They are certainly expensive. The more I’ve used efoils since the video the more I realize it’s a great way for nearly anyone to experience that amazing feeling of flight that us classic foilers love so much.
That's awesome. If you know how to foil, I'd recommend a board that's ~5ft. If you don't, something larger. If I can help, let me know. wakethief@icloud.com
I got the '5. It's a good compromise size for ease of waterstart, and low swing weight for carving. But this also depends on your body weight.... I'm 155 pounds, 5' 10"
@@kippywylie I am the same hight but weight is 30lbs heavier. The 4.9 -5 seems to be a great size to start with. I would change the size once I felt I have mastered it.
I really would like to get into foiling using an efoil, since I don't have easy access to boats or jetskis. But these things are suuuper expensive. Do you know if it is viable to build an efoil from scratch and if there is a place to get some information on that?
There's a few DIY efoil forums, but I wouldn't say I know a place to go. You might want to check out foil drive assist in australia. It can be paired with a classic hydrofoil to give some of the features of an efoil.
Like I really want to try it but I've never ridden a skateboard or surfboard and I'll likely have a hard time riding one. And also I'm afraid of injuries from getting onto one from a dock. I guess I'm afraid I'll jump on one then fall back and hit my head or something idk. I'll need lessons for sure.
They’re very similar, but do vary across different parameters. I preferred lifts long throw trigger. I preferred flites multiple safety features. Each rider will have different preferences. And unless you have a specific top feature priority it would be hard to name a favorite.
That’s a tough question … there’s a lot of classic foil brands. Each seem to specialize at different things. Like any industry there are pros and cons of each.
200 Classic wing. I've tried the 200HA and 250HA for regular foiling. This was a nice wing for sure, but I don't have enough expertise on efoil wing performance and didn't try enough lift wings to have a perspective I'm proud of. Please reach out to lift for a retailer. Aidan and Ted can be reached at ADKEFOIL@gmail.com I'm positive they can help!
Both were great. I think there’s pros and cons and since this video has been released each have improved their product (new Flite controller). With my son being the main user, I liked the inherent safety features that Flite has included in their design.
Really glad you landed on that particular conclusion, as I am taking the opposite of your journey. Got about 30-40 hrs on my efoil, but finally going to learn dockstart pumpfoiling this August. Super stoked, especially since watching your videos! Expectations: Less zen, more fun of mastery of technique, more dopamine from the work-out. Find it odd that the heavy efoil was as easy to turn as regular foil, but then again that could be your Axis HA foil vs low-aspect efoil that really was compared. Or it could be mass is so centered on efoil that difference in foot-pressure is marginal. Did you compare on quick rail-2-rail too, not just single turn maneuvers?
Hi Sven. Lets please keep in touch. I suspect I can learn a lot from your journey. Yes, I am riding large wingspan wings which had as much roll resistance as the smaller efoil wings. Great point! I think you're right, though. Small movements have less roll resistance on a regular foil because you can introduce yaw with your back foot as you then roll wing to carve, while I couldn't do this on an efoil as easily due to the thrust driving you in forward direction. I think I should make a video comparing that point. Thanks for bringing it up!
@@WakeThief So here is the end result from dock starts: Naish 2140(projected surface) HA (5.4 AR), 310HA rear wing, 75cm mast, 60cm fuse BW 215lbs 200 attempts split on 10 days. Best attempt had me at about 7-8 pumps before I stalled. I can only blame my lack of pumping technique, though it would probably have been easier with an even bigger foil. The dock had giant bars on the sides which made it impossible to do any running start, so I was forced to do a stationary start. No calm water, and some undercurent made it harder on several of the days. Got a family member to film a couple of my attempts for every session to check where I could improve my technique or whether I made any progress. On my best attempts I could feel the glide from a couple of my pumps, but the margin of error is so small I could not keep it up . On a sidenote: The guy doing the filming was a skateboarder with no foiling experience, but at 170lbs I thought he would have a massive advantage on both bw and boarding skils, but alas, after about 10 failed attempts he was not motivated to keep grinding! As I had not mastered the pumping technique prior to these attempts, I failed to complete my goal for the summer, but I am (still) super stoked about foiling. Next step is learning winging and hopefully master the pumping technique.
@@WakeThief I've kite foiled with my all carbón tiny "pocket" board foiling for many years without a helmet. The primary difference is when you screw up a 6 pound board hits your head vs a 60 pound board with much more inertia
Hi Olwen - I don't know much about it, but definitely have seen it on TH-cam. I've tried a few times, but I wouldn't say with much success. My lake just isn't windy enough. Will give it a try soon and I promise to share.
I think it's amazing, and it seems to be growing super fast ... even among loyal kiteboarder who held out for awhile thinking it wasn't going to be fun.
Thanks for the reply! My husband just started but I think without an efoil it's tough because you've gotta keep paddling back to your starting point but you can't carry a paddle and wing easily! I've been hauling him in my kayak hahaha!
Very cool review mate. Would be great if Waydoo could hook you up with an e-foil to try as well, given they are a very popular e-foil for the consumer at a more accessible price point (the Hyundai of the e-foil world, compared with the BMW and Mercedes of e-foil world). Keep up the great work mate!
@@mikeb1039 I'm not sure what you refer to? We ride the second generation boards from Waydoo and it is well known that they are less noisy than the Fliteboard and I can promise you, our speeds meet (and have exceeded once or twice) the advertised speed, run time, the same story (often longer than advertised for Gen 2 boards). No known motor failures in second generation boards, and the bent mast you refer to is the long mast from the first (kickstarter) boards, which are no longer available. Good news though, is customers who had product failures from the first generation Waydoo boards have all received second generation replacement parts.
Thank you. That is super high praise from a credible channel like yours. I really appreciate the comment. I'm an efoil newbie and have a lot to learn from your channel and others.
@@randbarrett8706 so? It doesn't seem that expensive to make. Things are luxury because they have a high price to make not because people want them to be luxurious
I haven’t seen anyone do this … I wasn’t able to because … too much drag under the water and so much speed needed to keep me and a 70lb efoil flying that the thrust from pumping is just too great for me to create.
@@WakeThief I also was wondering if a circular airfoil is more stable at lower speeds is it possible that a circular hydrofoil is more stable lower speeds meaning it will take less physical effort to fly I picture something like an airobi
I love the out of the box thinking! I really don’t know?!?!? I wonder if the rotation of the aerobi helps it fly? I have to think about it. Thanks for taking the time to leave this note! Happy new year!
@@WakeThief there's also another flying circular aircraft it's called an geobat there's an old video from 2011 of an RC plane that uses a circular wing because it's more stable at lower speeds there is even a paper airplane cut out not entirely sure why the principles of that cannot be applied to a hydrofoil if you took the aerobi design and turned it into a hydrofoil and used it in much the same way you can make very large hydrofoils or even multiple hydrofoils on one device to increase stability
I must say, even though I was new to foiling, I was bored after 10 minutes on an efoil. Using the wind, the waves or your own energy is a 100 times more appealing IMO.
Thanks Miranda. I might feel that way on an efoil too but haven’t yet clocked enough hours to have a strong opinion either way. I love the fact it’s so accessible for others to experience flight too
@@mirandamitchell9102 I come from 5 years of kite foiling and yes.... The boring aspect is a concern after I purchased a Lift 3 months ago. I don't particularly like a simple "zen" cruise day, but instead I'm obsessed with searching for boats to wake chase. Additionally I plan two perfect this activity for coast wave riding, and high wind swell riding. But my primary want is that we winter on a zero wind Mexico beach and I need daily sessions
I'm having fun riding ferry wake on SF bay with my Fliteboard and catching some waves at fort point. Given the option of the right conditions, I'll take wingfoiling first, then SUP foiling in surf w/foildrive, then efoil. I own all three. The best thing about efoil is when there's no wind/no swell you can still get out on the water.
Makes sense, Hugh. The price is no doubt a deterrent, however if someone was considering a new surf boat you might be able to remove a few surf features to pay for an efoil.
@@WakeThief If I was buying a new surf boat I could buy 20 e foils! I literally paid 5k for my boat, stuck a shaper on the side (I am going to try the bottom thanks to you) and a 3k foil. Beautiful endless waves here in the Canadian Rockies. Nice thing about the boat is the ability to hang out with friends on a boat! It's very social.
This is the dilemma. I think I'd need a friend or spouse or child to have one too, so we could do it together. My rationale has been like yours so far.
It floats, and there's a strap that encloses your palm to the controller. Have not had a problem in 3 months. Besides.... If you drop it everything would stop and you simply grab it again.
Ohhhh! That cavitation at 4:21 is So bad! Was the wing damaged? I had a wing that had cavitation like that and it got so turbulent at 17mph. Like I hit a wall! Great video as always! Thanks!

Wow! Flite was adamant that we wear a helmet. We honored their request.

Another great video. Well done 👍🏻
Thank you Bruce. Means a lot.
Can you still pump on an efoil? Or is it too heavy to move without the prop
Too heavy and not enough glide
Next up wingfoil?
You got it! I just ordered a wing and it’s on my to do list!
@@WakeThief It's on my list, too! Almost bought a setup a couple months ago before I went to Key West.
You'll be flying in no time. enjoy!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing, David. I will certainly share my experience!
Wipeouts are real … sometimes I have a long swim home!
Would it be easier to learn e-foiling first or classic foiling?
Efoiling
@@WakeThief It would be nice if it were possible to combine the two. A lightweight efoil that has just enough power to get you off the water, and assist your pumping enough that your range is far greater than a classic foiler
@macrumpton this product combines the two pretty well. tinyurl.com/42uf42ed
I just started surfing in the last year and this looks way more accessible to be as a Canadian with many lakes around, but not to many ocean swells to catch.
Just 1 question I haven't seen addressed in any video.
What happens when you fall? With either the efoil or classic, how do you get back on and continue the ride?
Efoil has thrust so you can start it anywhere. Classic foiling requires a nearby dock to borrow for a dock start. 😂
@@WakeThief so on a classic foil of you bail...what then?
Swim to a nearby dock and dock start it (run and jump onto board) or it’s a long swim home. Most people get towed on a classic foil from a jet ski or boat.
@@WakeThief dang that seems like a rich people thing. I'll see myself out.
Lake George!!
Just went out on an Efoil today and I’m having withdrawals. Wish it was mine but it wasn’t. I gotta get one for myself
Well said!
Is there a hybrid version where you can classic and evoil at the same time
Yes. The foil drive is a great example of a hybrid.
@@WakeThiefso foil drive is just the motor etc and you have to buy a board from somewhere else?
@zacharyb9743 yes. Exactly.
What size of Fliteboard was it where you are with your son on,please???
The black one is the pro. The white one is Fliteboard
@@WakeThief Is that mean black one was 5" and what size was white one, please???
I can’t recall. Please look at Flites website. You will see the pro and the Fliteboard I am referencing
@@WakeThief That means they are both Fliteboards or???
Both are made by Flite … one is called Fliteboard and one is called Pro
I haven’t been able to do that. I have been able to do that with the foil drive though! th-cam.com/video/jp6-l2-LZOM/w-d-xo.html

I live along the Thames river so efoiling is a no brainier. It’s now just a matter of what size.
Need to combine this with the WIG craft
Only relevant if in flat waters. Here in Australia we are all near the surf. Classic foil is perfect
Do you have to register this as a boat?
I need to try this I need to loose some weight first. What the max weight on of these foils is rated fore I’m around 265
Electric should be fine. Classic … important to get stiff mast. I can help when you’re ready. Wakethief@icloud.com
@@WakeThief Thanks! The drive assist thing looks really promising.
Clip on electric motor to upgrade hydrofoil?
Like this? th-cam.com/video/e-BuMfJ19zE/w-d-xo.html
So....which one?
Flite or Lyft?
They’re very similar, but do vary across different parameters. I preferred lifts long throw trigger. I preferred flites multiple safety features. Each rider will have different preferences. And unless you have a specific top feature priority it would be hard to name a favorite.

What’s the best classic foil and e foil brand.
That’s a tough question … there’s a lot of classic foil brands. Each seem to specialize at different things. Like any industry there are pros and cons of each.
Thank you for a great video,Which wing did you try on Lyft please in what’s your feedback
Where should I buy it. Give us any link.
Please see the description of the video for all the links
Thanks for the great video. Any thoughts on which you would recommend…Flite vs Lift?
Both were great. I think there’s pros and cons and since this video has been released each have improved their product (new Flite controller). With my son being the main user, I liked the inherent safety features that Flite has included in their design.
@@WakeThief Thanks!
Thanks for shearing, beautiful
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, Pedro.
@@WakeThief So here is the end result from dock starts:
Naish 2140(projected surface) HA (5.4 AR), 310HA rear wing, 75cm mast, 60cm fuse
BW 215lbs
200 attempts split on 10 days.
Please send me some vids. Happy to help diagnose as best I can. Wakethief@icloud.com

What are you thoughts on foiling with a wing?
Please try out the new Fanatic Aero High Aspect 2000... I could imagine that it's even better than the Axis 1150. Great Content by the way!
Thanks Heinz. Good to hear from you. I’ll check it out!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA $12,000! You're fucking hilarious!
Thank you. I'm working hard to get a Waydoo right now. Appreciate the comment.
Nice review!

Can’t you manually pump the efoil when you don’t press the throttle? Best of both worlds :)
I haven’t seen anyone do this … I wasn’t able to because … too much drag under the water and so much speed needed to keep me and a 70lb efoil flying that the thrust from pumping is just too great for me to create.
I envision something similar but mine had the motor in the front and was more like a bicycle
I’ve never heard of that. Interesting concept!
I’ll check it out. Thank you!
How fast can they travel
I’ve reached 40km/hr on Flite but suspect with the smallest front wings they could go even faster.
Does an efoil get boring eventually? Seems less playful, challenging and maneuverable.
For some it might. I would like to do it with someone else. Tow foiling, or both thieving wakes of passing boats on the efoils would be a blast.

$12,000?!?! HOLY CRAP BASKETS
At 15k I’ll pass. I bought a boat and two foils for a lot less than that. If I had the scratch sure but one thing at a time!
