Aeron Got Patchfaced Theory: Mouthpiece of the Deep Ones - A Song of Ice and Fire - Game of Thrones

- This theory was just too tasty to leave as a livestream, so we've edited it down and packed it with art! One of my very best theories, I'm quite proud of it, and it explains how the Deep Ones have been steering Ironborn culture since the very beginning!

The way you put clues together is unreal my man we appreciate you
Another great video my man. Your ability to make these feel “off the cuff” or exploratory, while being so thorough, is exceptional.
Good and interesting take!
Thank you for the continued content! Really appreciate your great work.
patchface got damphaired!
"Fish ate scales from his eyes"
Scales = coins --> covered eyes --> coins for The Ferryman --> Fish = The Ferryman. THEREFORE: the Deep (Ones) Ferryman took Damp-Hair past death
Just immense thanks for keeping the POSITIVE flame of ASOIAF alive. Too much cynicism going around by far, and your channel is a sanctuary!
Honestly i find it low key pathetic to mock a talented writer for taking a long time to weave a literary tapestry of such beauty and power
Less talked about but i also see a ton of ageism which is DUMB. Do y you not get older? We are all passing THROUGH time! Every one will die one day me, grrm, your pets etc and that's ok. How many of us could write a novel at age 40? And they're seriously making mock of a guy who has devoted decades of his life to his storytelling?
I'm sure fools japed at Da Vinci for taking 16 years to finish the Mona Lisa. Who's laughing now? Or should i say, who is smiling enigmatically now? The Mona Lisa that's who! Because Leonardo FINISHED HER EVEN THOUGH IT TOOK TIME
@RolloTonéBrownTown highkey pathetic. Hard to imagine they've written anything profound themselves.
Just realized that in Aeron I the Damphair mentions that they should have healed Urrigon’s hand “the old way, with fire and salt”.
This foreshadows the healing of Victarion’s Hand by Makorro.
Victarion then says that “Two gods are with him” - The God of Fire, and the God of Salt
Victarion's a BBQ wight
Outside of House Stark, the Greyjoys are my favorite pov chapters. They are so mysterious and different from each other
The art for the thumbnail 👌
Atleast I can think about Greyjoy’s while stoned and recovering from being sick on the east coast
Same over here stomach bug on this coast is going around
Get well man. Aussie girl x ♥️, from Australia
yeah I'm sick too actually
@DavidLightbringer get well pumkin, we need you. X aussie girl.x ❤
Sick is the word for today tg it's not I need power anymore..
More than just a NDE? He does have a major personality shift and so did Patchface... The building blocks are here. This will be good to watch at the full lore video level
So I can't claim to be an expert in pouring molten metal on people, but based on my memory gold melts at around 1000 degrees Celsius so I'm pretty sure it would cauterize any wounds it caused so I don't think Viserys would have bled.
The iron isles and their mythos are one of the most interesting for me, we are lucky we have them being present in the main story and books, they could easily be a three-paragraph page about some eastern islands in the world book but we have them in the main land and taking action, so cool. Thanks for the video, I'll watch it later with something to eat
excellent as always. needs more Reading Rhaegar.
So glad I'm not the only one deeply interested in Aeron's story.
Maybe one of the new songs can be an ASOIAF/Dave version of pirate metal
Imagine how pissed the deep ones were when the Ironborn started reviving their drowned human sacrifices. Gives a new twist to the words, "we do not sow."
no that's part of it, check out the Deep Ones video
originally the drowning was a test to see if you have Deep One hybrid DNA. the failures get patchfaced and turned to thralls and servants
Ngl, I have been labouring under the delusion that Squishers ARE Deep Ones, rather than hybrids. Now I get to watch the Ironborn series again with new lenses. Give thanks for infinitely-rewatchable content!
it doesn't really matter what names people use - there are the fish beings, and they create hybrids, and that's basically the deal
@@DavidLightbringer But do they smoke seaweed?
I really hope we see a resurrected Sawayne Botley in Winds OW as a crew member on Euron's ship. Harder, stronger, squishier, and a lot more queit.
Maybe Euron has so much animosity towards the Drowned God because he knows that the Drowned God- the dying and rebirth as a thrall- glorifies a parasitic relationship.
On the other hand, Euron having a closer relationship to the Drowned God/squishers than Aeron would be really interesting, and explain how he was able to sail through dangerous places.
Delicious knowledge indeed. Thanks for the content Dave!
Tyrion was dressed in motley when he fell in the Rhoyne. And he is a wit, who drinks and used to tumble. Is it possible he died and was brought back? Could he be subtly influenced by the Deep Ones now? That would be very interesting once he reaches Dany and Kings Landing…
Super impressed you’ve kept this channel going so long. Is this your full time job? Love the dedication, love the content!!
That dopamine hit when discovering cool connections we've never even considered
I Like it a lot : )
Keep it up
I loved this! I feel like I need to listen to this again because there’s so much here and in the word play and number symbolism and different references to religion, that it just creates more layers of reality in the world. I keep thinking of the who,e concept to of ‘as above so below’ and things in the above world reflecting events under the sea or mirrored back in a way. Really enjoyed this! Thank you for this breakdown!
A conversation starting with "I've been thinking a lot about the Ironborn, lately" is gonna be good by definition
You have some of the best theories in ASoIaF. Sorry to have missed the stream, but thanks for keeping the video up. Cheers🎉
Hello friends. I like the title.. can’t wait to get home to watch
George is such a genius and without your channel, most of it would have flown completely over my head.
So...im not all that clued in on the lore, theories etc....we already have Fire Wights, Ice Wights, are Patchface & Aeron then Water Wights?
The others raise ice wights, Beric and Catelyn are fire wights. The ice wights are called ice wights in the books but I don't think Beric or lady stone heart are explicitly called fire wights but since they're raised from the dead with fire magic I think it's fair to call them that. The Aeron and Parchface wight idea is a little more speculative but the text is pretty clear that they both drowned and were revived.
Thank you so much for your work. It being such joy and positive thought in a world where it’s hard to find it sometimes.
Mind blowing as always 🤯
i always dig the vids, but i get excited when youre excited :D
The squishers+Iron Born have a lot in common with the Sahuagin of the Krakkenauricht (details in Havens of the Great Bay) - suffice to say the Sahuagin (Sah-hwa-ghin) once had an ancient undersea civilization - until the coming of the Kraken! (In Cerilia "The Kraken" is an Awnsheigh, a being infused with the power of the dead god Azrai, it laid waste the Sahuagin civilization and made them worship only it) l. Sort of an inversion (yet odd parallel) of George's work on the subject of fishmen lol
Fantastic content. Love the lore.
Oh boiii I Love these ironborn videos
Yes you absolutely can drown and resuscitated and it's fairly reliable and consistent. I've seent it happen during Marine swim school with my own 4 eyes.
4 eyes? sounds sus
@DavidLightbringer fours better than two bruh

Happy b'day. Like your namesake kake, may your year be sweet with the creamy icing of serendipity and good fortune being present in a thick layer all around ya
Love this fucking channel. Most entertaining ASOIAF channel out there.

0:44 you got me this early in. 100% got patchfaced !!
It would honestly be pretty wholesome if the drowned god smites Euron on Damphair's behalf. It would wrap that storyline in a nice little bow.
You touched on something very important to better understanding things early in the vid.*
Some of the truly bizarre stuff is easy to gloss over because we read other, less weird things fairly often. We've had a chance to read the entire series a few (lol) times and we simply accept some things because..well, that's just how the story is.
Yeah Dampair is a weird guy but I had been reading him more as an ultimately frightened man who, unable to confront his childhood scars, has buried himself in dogma to fill in gaps in his sense of identity.
I appreciate being asked to close-read his dialogue and look at it in a more open minded way. It's actually so freaking awkward how his relatives are plotting a very worldly war of conquest, then he comes in unbidden, loudly exclaiming religious mantras.
When you further characterised wights as 'robots' waiting to be activated, i suddenly saw Aeron in a new, disturbing light.
It's a bit less scary when we get his POV, but I'm currently on Jaime II in my AFFC read and I'm really looking forward to reading Aeron's upcoming chapters. Thank you😊
so glad you got a kick out of the theory, it really was a lot of fun to talk about :)
The shadows come to dance my Lord , Dance my Lord , Dance my Lord
Patchface! Patchface!
43:10 Time to Shireen the green
Loved the video🎉
Bones of the soul, that deep connection, they do not die. As we know what is dead never dies.
Ahhh yeah another bed time story!
What I appreciate about ASOIAF the more I listen to theories and excerpt is- I'm sure there's a vague mythology and magic that George is using. And I don't think it'll ever be explained in the books. Because I don't think he finds that part important. Wierd magicy stuff is happening the the characters, and understanding it doesn't seem like its in their future. Just like life, the likelihood that those players will ever understand it is nearly impossible. They just have to live and act is the magicy stuff happening around them. We can try to understand, but at the end of the day, that's just the world. We are like the magisters. Collecting stories and thoughts of players in the game, and trying to understand it as much as possible.
Happy New Year! I think my favourite videos are your Deep Ones / Ironborn ones. You and Grey Waste Tim discussed this during one of your Oldtown videos and I’m of the same opinion of GWT that I don’t think GRRM will specifically show any Deep Ones / Squishers in the main story - as it is too big as it is without bringing in another Others-esq villain. That being said, I do believe there will be some unreliable sources that mention the mermen attacking some people in Oldtown
I don’t think they’re fully save Aeron, but I do wonder if he will “die/drown” during the battle and that’s the last we see of him as he envisions the Drowned God taking him to his halls. But in reality we are supposed to believe that the Squishers have just grabbed his corpse or something like that
Lmao whoever said “is it time to stop saying praise Garth and start saying Burn Shireen” is unhinged and also my favorite commenter in our fandom
When you said "it's me, it's you" I thought you were gonna end with it's us because of Bly Manor. It is great if you haven't seen it yet!
Appreciate your effort brother. You should finish these book for us - George won't/can't and If Sanderson gets hold of the IP we're all F'ckd. Anyways, love that you're still into it with passion. cheers.
Yay more content 🎉
In Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe (a series you should 100% analyze on this channel), the protagonist has a NDE at the beginning of the story in which he jumps into a river full of water plants and is suddenly tangled in them and dragged to the bottom. Just as he is drowning he sees a vision of a gigantic woman in the water and he is thrown back onto shore. Later in the series he speaks to the same creature, and throughout the series there is reference to two titanic cthulu-like ocean-dwelling creatures that are similar to Satan in the world of the book. I haven't been able to find any interview with George where he talks about Gene Wolfe but I suspect he was a fan.
yeah isn't a huge fan of Gene Wolf? interesting stuff, I'll have to peep it
Staghorn CORAL is a thing, which would make a great crown for a drowned king
So glad we are calling the other what’s they are. Vampires.
Yeeeeeees YEEEEES
I'd like to learn more about Harrenhal.
check out my Harrenhal vids then - I have a produced one and then a follow up livestream I did with Grey Waste Tim
@DavidLightbringer will do 👍
Yo, btw the Drowned God might be totally real. Elden Ring has a fishy-merman-squid undead and soulless solar king who spreads his metaphysical tentacles and manifestations throughout the realm. At the end of the questline related to him we find him buried at the foot of the world tree, where we enter his dream realm and fight his wighted/undead/curse-infected dragon buddy Fortissax. And you never guessed who murdered the Drowned God('s soul): the princess whose explicit goal is to usher in the Long Night (she killed her own body in the process, too, so now her soul lives in a four armed doll; that was the actual goal, she didn't care about the golden boy, she just needed someone to bear the other half of death for her. I'm not making anything up, I swear!).
The Grey King reminds me of Noah restarting civilization after a great calamity. Noah seeing a rainbow as proof that God wouldn't flood the Earth again also makes me think about Renly's Rainbow Guard. Azor Ahai and Night's King are sort of prophets for the greater magical forces of Planetos. Prophets, a few if not most, are known for foolishness, indulgence, and/or pride (Noah, Moses, David, Solomon), and that aptly describes Azor Ahai and Night's King. So the weirwood/merling(?) characters (Varys, Catelyn, Sansa), what are they, angels intervening in human affairs?
p.s. on a related note, if you haven't read Cain by Jose Saramago, I highly recommend it.
one day you're gonna have to bite the bullet and do a lovecraft deep dive
Also Aeron has seaweed hanging from his hair as Patchface's whole deal with his bells?
BOANER POWER LMAO
I think YOU been Patchfaced, _Mr Lightbringer McPatcherberry_
☄️☄️☄️sweeter the second time around !!!
Great job! Thank you so much for such interesting content! 👄😻👅
I am concerned about the squishers fr bro what the fuck is their problem
"I've edited it down"
:squints: 2:05:01
How long was the stream?!
3 hours
The main thing we do is make a lot of small edits to increase the pace so that it's just a faster and smoother watch. then we add a bunch of extra art, which I'm not able to display while I'm also following notes on the original live stream
I appreciate the quicker pace and better art!
Sometimes the clips you pull out of streams are little substories / subexplanations / subtheories. But this one was the whole shebang, just tightened up, which is great!
was confused until 29:39 when i realized Aeron isn't Euron lol
Wait, could they have drowned at the same time ? Do we know when it was for Damphair ?
It's weird both switch from jester to prophetic person
Just for curiosity's sake: "See" in "Holy See" comes from latin "sedes", meaning "seat".
So what if euron will try to sacrifice aaron and he fails? I'm sure that amuses euron well enough. Until the kraken he summons actually favors aaron over him that is.
Or the ritual fails due to aaron living, with fatal consequences to euron.
Would he sacrifice himself instead, for the greater cause, he's insane after all.
Leesssssgooooooo
It is possible that the Elder Brother of the Quiet Isle was also patchfaced
i don't see any evidence of that, but he is being used as a parallel to the Grey King's leal elder brother, check out the Lord Reaper video
But we are onto something?😂❤
Woohoo!!!I agree 👍
14:38 golden storm for pee pee related reasons, the laughing storm, is a Warhammer character 😅 (and also a baratheon)

Cool video but I think Aeron is just using religion as a way to cope with his trauma. At first it was drinking and partying and stuff, then he nearly died and turned to religion. Many people become fanatic when experiencing a near-death situation. I think Aeron is the opposite of Patchface and shows what fake drowned god prophets look like. He talks all mysteriously and stuff to make himself seem godly. I forget who made it, maybe Quinn the GM, but there was a good video explaining how each Greyjoy POV is meant to show the way people deal with trauma and Aeron's way was turning to religion and stuff.
I mean that's all an interesting narrative, and there's some truth to George writing about trauma with his characters - a lot of truth actually, I think that's one of the things he's interested in writing about - but that really has nothing to do with whether or not the magical part of this theory is true. George always has his magical workings parallel the personal workings of the characters, so that they enhance the character.
this is a fantasy story, magic is happening to everyone. it's very obvious that patchfaces drowning is the original magic the Ironborn are emulating, and it is indeed a magical resurrection that seems to give him a psychic link to beings under the sea. so theory is pretty solid, and all the questions I'm asking are logical ones
and the fact that patchface uses the exact wording as the Ironborn beliefs a out under the sea is kind of a giveaway
The ironborn are hilarious to me because they're these awful edgelords but they're also such boomers. Always droning about how "great" they used to be and being spiteful towards each other and everyone else.
oh man you're not wrong
Mildred, power and strength, it is a woman’s name. So could it mean women power and strength?
Dude I love your content but please have normal eyeglasses.
You must be new here... 👀😤 praise garth
@@theBlundstoneEmperoronly joking but yes, please explain?
Btw I also like buttplugs but the ones he has behind him are scary 👀
I have a really nice song using Patchface rhymes as lyrics
Hi David! Just wanted to leave a question because im not sure if this is an idea that has been floated around before in the ASOIAF community. When patchface says, "under the sea, the birds have scales for feathers..." Is it possible George is implying that Bloodraven, or other skinchanger types, could be warging into the fish in the sea the same way that they warg Ravens? I'm imagining that, maybe, this is how someone like Bloodraven could keep tabs and intel on places like the Iron Islands or even out in the ocean spying on ships while at sea?
Just an idea i had. Something tells me I'm not the first to think of this, but I'm honestly not sure!
Either way, love the videos!
