  • Thrilled to share a slice of history that perfectly illustrates the impact of a single invention (on commerce), akin to the cordless drill in the retail installation industry.
Rewind over a century in Costa Rica, where the humble ox cart (or "la carreta" in Spanish) revolutionized trade routes, turning rugged mountains into pathways of prosperity.
Picture this: coffee farmers once traversed daunting terrains, spending weeks to ferry their beans to the Pacific coast's major ports, all for the best market prices. The invention of the two-wheeled ox cart was not just a solution but a transformation, turning coffee into currency.
Fast forward to the present, the Eloy Alfaro Brothers’ ox cart factory, established in 1923 (in Sarchi) still producing quality products. A region famed for its coffee and skilled artisans stands as a testament to innovation and sustainable practices, running entirely on hydro energy. Their machinery, untouched by modern electricity, echoes the Amish's wood-crafting traditions.
Though these carts have transitioned from utility to ornamentation, the legacy continues. As local craftsmen pivot to creating souvenirs and gifts, catering to the burgeoning tourist influx with the El Jardin souvenir store. A retail concept that strategically taps into high traffic tourist corridors.
A massive shoutout to Anna (at the factory) and Tatiana (in the El Jardin store in San Ramon) respectively, were incredible and educational during my visit.
Next stop, France-stay tuned for more tales of innovation and heritage from the World Retail Congress!
    Pura Vida,
    The Retail Nomad

Amazing to me. Closest thing that I can compare this to, is a Grist Mill in West Virginia, They are also powered by water. What a beautiful piece of completed art work. Unreal. Also thanks to Luigi & his family for being the tour guide for you. Just amazing to watch this process & the products that are produced.
