Never understood how firefighters - our "heroes" - can be more proud of being a member of a greedy union than a member of the community they serve. Glad at least they cannot forcibly deduct dues any longer.

      Sounds personal.

Why do you say greedy? I willingly have my union dues deducted. Further, the local unions ARE working firefighters and officers. So...who hurt you?

@@burienite I was one. There was nothing in our course of union governance that had anything to do with community service. The position was ALWAYS about greed. I once voted against a resolution forcing the employing agency which was struggling financially to honor a pay raise commitment. I had an alternative proposal for the city. Talk about greed; you would not believe the hate thrown at me. If you think any of these greedy folks would do the work as volunteers (they may in communities in which they live) you are kidding yourself. And, many work 20 years, get full benefits and work only one day out of four. I don't know if you are married to a firefighter, have relatives or are one yourself, but they are indeed a greedy bunch.

@@johnwashburn7423 I am a professional firefighter (20+ years) and work for a busy agency. I was on my locals executive board for 6 years. I sat across the table during three contract negotiations. I've seen ALL sides and ALL types. My local has NEVER agreed to any contract that would willingly put our agency in a position to lay people off, all in the name of "gettin' our raises." If that's true about your local, then that' unfortunate (and shortsighted).
Have I fought very hard for a FAIR contract that was supported by data and facts and was appropriate for my locale and my department? Absolutely. Do I work with a bunch of greedy bastards who only think about money? Far from it. Your experience seems (IMO) to be the exception--not the norm. Your over generalization is not even close to any person or local that I've ever come across in my time.

@@burienite i know greed. Watched it AS AN IAFF MEMBRR for two years. I was proud of being a firefighter but not of being a union member. My allgiance was to the cummunity I served not the horrid union.
Test question, which you fail if you are honest: if your employer had to cut staff 50% would you choose to recruit a volunteer contingent or prefer the city burn and children die. I know first hand what your scare-the-public tactic would be.
