    RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE
    On July 4, 2021 at 11:40am, SBCoFD responded to a Residential Structure Fire at the 17K block of Sycamore in the City of Hesperia. First arriving engine found a working fire in a single story home that had extended into the attic. Firefighters made entry to the home with hose lines to search for any occupants and limit the spread of fire. Truck crews supported interior firefighters with vertical ventilation on the roof above. The fire was ultimately held to the rear portion of the house. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters reported.

    I understand ventilation improves the interior conditions. But wow, what the fire itself doesn’t destroy, the venting and water will destroy the rest.

    2 questions.
    1. Why do US fire departments cut holes in roofs and no other country in the world use this technique?
    2, why cut a hole in the roof when there’s already fire coming through the roof?

    • @andyoxleyonhistravels
      @andyoxleyonhistravels 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      God knows they seem to think it's great. They wasted time cutting holes in the roof when the fire had already vented and nobody was putting water on the fire for ages. Its a shallow pitched roof so no benefit being up there. Just gain access from the ground and put water on the fire, it's not difficult.

    • @stephenlunt2251
      @stephenlunt2251 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The holes they cut didn’t release fire or smoke.

    • @centralohioemergency
      @centralohioemergency 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      1. Other countries have different methods and materials for structure and roof construction.
      2. The holes cut serve to release the toxic smoke and gasses from the roofs beneath, making those rooms more survivable for a trapped victims and the firefighters working there, and reducing the risk of flashover. While in this fire the roof already had a hole, the firefighters were not able to see that until they climbed up, and likely also cut to determine how much the fire and smoke had spread through the roof as well .
      3. To address the point below, while this ladder company crew is on the roof, there is an engine company going interior with a hose to put water on the interior. The roof team is venting to help them with visibility and safety by removing some heat and smoke from the interior.

    Why do firefighters cut the large holes on roofs? Seems to cause the fire to get worse, I’m sure there’s a good reason .

    • @donnie7013
      @donnie7013 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It ventilates the fire, so yes it does add oxygen to the fire itself.
      However, since you're opening a hole in the roof it allows the structure to expedite smoke faster which disrupts the thermal layering of the smoke. It's why they tell you to crawl in fires, as heat rises. Essentially, the flames are bigger but it's a whole lot cooler inside the structure which helps prevent more items from combusting.

      Our ambulance operators wear the blue helmets. We have transport ambulances in some areas of the fire district. These units are staffed with single function non safety Paramedics and EMTS. In these areas they are on our first alarm assignments. They prepare for any potential victims or medical for any injuries that may occur. They also assist with rehab along with hose loading, bottle changing, and clean up.

      @eriksand9262 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How was there time wasted getting water on the fire because a truck crew was on the roof?? While that truck crew was up on the roof, an engine crew was more than likely inside putting water on the fire 🤔

    • @oldskier3019
      @oldskier3019 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eriksand9262 You are right. I copied and pasted that roof work comment from another video and didn't notice the other sentence about water came with it. The roof work comment does stand. Although, on second look, it took an awfully long time to make those flames go away. In such a small house, that means they didn't get the water on the burning material very fast.

    • @Nervegas
      @Nervegas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@eriksand9262 Because regardless of what the engine was doing, the fire had already self vented above the point of origin. So any new vent cuts are introducing a flow path towards unburned sections of the attic while not removing much in the way of additional heat and smoke as they already have a path out of the structure. His point still stands, the Truck crew could have been working on other tasks such as salvage or helping the first in engine get said hoseline to the seat of the fire instead of venting an already vented fire. Even if they were doing a 2/2 split with primary and vent, the two on vent can be working to accomplish other things. That roof represents a massive risk to the vent crew for very little benefit in this case. I have never understood cali dept's obsession with vertical vents. They have their time and place but are not the end all be all of firefighting tactics. Yet I routinely see videos of crews on roofs with fire well vented through trying to just make more holes for no reason. Did no one learn from Fresno?

    So all sources of fires in California have been related to the following: Smoking, Drinking or Drugs ( and lately illegal fire work storeage). However funny thing is that the California Fire whoever person is banned aerial fireworks stating that there are chemicals that are dangerous to the environment ( that was the last report), prior to this he stated it was a primary cause of fires in the month of july (so we all get punished for what happens in one month). So here is my counter, cigarettes and other tobacco products have more harmful contaminants than any amount of fireworks has been proven to cause health related issues yet they are allowed to continue to be sold in the state. They are also responsible for more fires and damage caused by fires than Any other source relatable to fires. I just think the fire chiefs and all them guys that make these laws are complete idiots we all know they get paid off to make these stupid decisions.

    • @hosedragger-204
      @hosedragger-204 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Easier said than done in many cases. Here in my town (where I'm a Probationary Firefighter) there's no municipal water supply as there isn't a sufficient tax base to pay for the cost of installing one along with the upkeep costs.
      Instead we have "dry" hydrants spread around town at various lakes, ponds, and manmade ponds on private properties where they've added dry hydrants to give us a fill point in the event of a fire near them. Our first due on a (non-commercial) structure fire is our engine which has 750 gallons of water and 30 gallons of foam on it. On initial attack we run foam in the initial attack line(s). Our second due is our 2,000 gallon tanker, followed up by our 75 foot "straight stick" aerial ladder with 500 gallons of water on it, then last is our 4,000 gallon tanker. Meanwhile, we're getting mutual aid rolling with tankers and manpower before we're even out the door of our own station. That way in the time it takes us to reach the scene, they're usually getting to their stations and about to roll out around the time we arrive on scene. If it turns out we don't need them then we can cancel them either right before they leave, or very shortly after they start rolling from their stations. If we need them, then they're already on the road and we've saved about 10+ minutes of wait time by starting them responding early. This is the way my entire county operates and it works well and has resulted in saving many buildings that could have otherwise been lost. Every region has a different way of operating, and different factors influencing why they operate that way. In the end though, if it work for them then there's nothing wrong with operating differently than other areas
