Back then engines and bateries weren't as reliable, and having an oil pressure and voltage guge was a big deal. Engines need oilnpressure to keep the krankshaft from grinding over it's bearings, and low voltage means alternator or battery are busted.
I love having them too...feels like a lower level, lower class vehicle when you didn't have them. And like others said in the comments, back in the day it was important to have those gauges to see if your old carbed engine with a 100k mi lifetime was about to take a shit and needed a rebuild or if your maintenance-required battery or short life alternator needed attention.
In late-'88 we bought one new, (since it was ordered with the large engine and some other options we had to wait)... unlike the one featured here, the paint on ours was very even with no orange-peel. That poor Bronco was beaten mercilessly, both off and on-road! We used her for off-roading, or 'Bajaing' as we use to call it, towing the old 35.5 Bayliner, for moving furniture and heavy machine parts, just about every other use you can imagine; but she took the abuse in her stride! After 12 years and 175,000 miles she still ran very well and no major work was ever needed on the entire powertrain. However! lol... She sure showed the massive abuse in dents and scratches. I bought it after owning an indestructible and quite astonishingly fun to drive, (American style "Farfegnugen") little 1974 Bronco, it was a bit had to get use to the massive size of the larger Bronco, but all-in-all it was well worth the high, at that time price. So sad to see how U.S. auto manufacturers have downsized their offerings to only a few models now. I miss the virtually endless models and different package options they use to offer. I know it's an overstatement but, "One size fits all", now.
Oh how I wish someone..anyone...would sell a mid or full size 2 door SUV. Not all of us want 4 doors! That being said, thank you once again MW for these awesome retro reviews!
The 2021 Bronco is supposed to come as a 2 door and 4 door. I'm preparing to buy my first new vehicle if they will build me a 2 door with a manual transmission and 4wd.

God I miss my 84 bronco...That thing was a tank and so much fun to drive. I stuck a Jasper stage 1 engine in it, put a 650 Holley double pumper, shorty headers, and an MSD ignition on it. That thing was a beast. It would pull the front tires off the ground, I shit you not... Granted it did have some 33 swampers on it, God I miss that thing...😪
so interestingly enough seeing the TILT STEERING my mind BLEW cause ive got an f250 xlt and its got the same tilt... and i never knew... ive had the truck for 10 years.....
They stopped building the 5.0 and the 300 Six just when they had both of those engines perfect. Those engines probably cost Ford a couple of hundred bucks to produce after making them for 40 years.
Same here, I'm biding my time and hoping Ford will get it right. I have confidence that they will. Btw, do you have a '79 Honda Accord? Just curious because I love old school Hondas (and some newer ones, as I have a 2005 Element EX 4wd 5spd).
Motorweek - Please upload your review of the 1990 GM U-Body "dustbuster" minivans! The Chevy Lumina APV, Pontiac Trans Sport, and Oldsmobile Silhouette. Would LOVE to see that!
My first vehicle that I ever bought and own now is the 1988 Ford Bronco XLT. I needed a vehicle and wanted something in terms of a truck and when the opportunity came I got one. I know the bronco is not a perfect vehicle but, my bronco runs great regardless of the year and miles it has been driven. I really enjoy driving this truck and plan on building it up over time. By upgrading the mechanical and body specifications to make it run and look good forever. Just my personal experience, opinion, and ideas about this truck I am not a expert on broncos and vehicles in general but, wanted to share my love and ideas about this great truck.
That's awesome, I wish you and your Bronco well. I have a 1995 Ford Taurus that I feel very similar about. I've had it for 6 or 7 years now, with 250k+ on it and it still runs great. I never thought I'd get old enough to say this, but "they don't make 'em like this anymore!" Lol
comon motorweek. you pull the passenger side seat release TWICE to get more room to exit from the rear (2nd pull tilts back of the seat forward.) Any bronco owner knows this lol! Fun to watch these old reviews..
I had a 91 with a 351W. I miss it every day. It finally just got too rusty, too worn out, and I got a 98 Expedition to replace it(not in 98) The Expy does not share any attributes with the older Broncos, and don;t let anyone tell you they do. 91 was last year for "non crunching frame" and it was SOLID. With some mediocre AT tires, it was also 100% unstoppable in snow. It could tow reasonably well. Late 80's Ford trucks had the most comfy interior ever. Something about the seat height and width, the shape and function of the dash and wheel, dashboard height, windsheild rake, ease of view out the sides, it was just a big easy truck to drive. I was a little annoyed at the complaints about seat adjustment. I owned mine for 14 years and never adjusted it once, or wished I had the ability to. When an interior is designed so well, there is little need for customization. Their MPG estimates were low. I got 17 hwy all day. There is a reason these sell for over 10 grand in good shape nowdays. There is nothing on the market like them, nor will there be again due to safety/mpg restrictions etc.
I drove those Broncos as well as the Chevy Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger from that era. All went well off road. But wow were they crude vehicles by today's standards. They were trucks and nothing more.
I have always liked the full size SUVs more than their smaller counterparts. Yes, they would be more expensive and use more fuel, but they had class. Even today, they still have class, if you can find one in excellent condition.
cmtmj2006 right? I found one with 32000 original miles on it....perfect shape....he was asking 23,000 for it and it sold in 2 days...I've seen them with over 200,000 miles, pretty beat and they're still 6 grand...only thing I can guess is that the older ones are converted to rock crawlers
For a full sized truck, it looks like it didn't dive a lot under braking or have much body roll under cornering. Passenger seat that tilts but doesn't roll forward, and driver seat which roll forward but doesn't tilt, oh how times have changed. The front bumper is lower on the passenger side, which is funny. Press car problems?
Ian McLeod These were notorious for bumper sag, unfortunately. Nothing that you couldn't fix yourself in a few minutes, but the way the bumper mounts, it is difficult to align and KEEP it that way. Lol. I have owned a number of Broncos and F-Series with this styling, and they've all demonstrated this issue. Beautiful truck though, overall!

I had a sweet Bronco all black with the chrome trim package. It would 4 wheel with the best small Jeeps anywhere I wanted to go. Then it was smooth and handled great on the highway or backroads. Suprising for such a beast. Only one problem was the sweating of the rear fiberglass roof interior. Otherwise it was a great vehicle
I have a 95 351 in great shape and you would not believe how many ppl ask me about it. Young, old, male and female. great driving truck with the coil spring and ttb front axle and the weight bias is perfectly even. 351's came with the same transmission and transfer case the powerstroke's had

@@wildbill23c i cant understand why people think that way. It was hi tech for 1988... that was decades ago. You can make the same comment 30 years from now about todays vehicles.
No, it isn't. Hyundai came a long way from what it was, but they're still not better than the other cars on the road. Unless, of course, those cars are old Hyundais. Which, they wouldn't be. Because there's no such thing as old Hyundais still on the road.
jdslyman I know. There is a place for everything but they are coming with too many bugs and issues. A true 4x4 SUV fan will favor a V8. The ecoboost line is too complicated and finicky and have crazy misfire issues. Trust me I have one. :)
Gregory Wills We’re also talking about a SUV/truck hybrid not a machine designed for speed, but rather the opposite, pulling power and off road ability
I’m thinking of getting one but the one I’m looking at has has a 5.0 but need fuel lines is the back big enough to fit a twin bed? Thinking of use it as a camping vehicle thanks
Christopher Conard ....yeah actually....the trick is to use clear silicone underneath the top where it rests on the body, the same caulking I use when I install window glass in a house etc etc...the downside: if and when you want to remove the top again, you've got to cut it off with a long razor blade knife....
When I was less than 8yrs old, my dad, mom, n I where in our 84 Bronco with the 351W, we were cruising n then they asked my sister a question, she wouldn't reply, turns out she wasn't even there, I was holding on to both seats looking thru the windshield so happily, then all of a sudden my dad hauled ass n my lil ass got glued, thrown to the back seat so fast I couldn't get myself to hold on to the seats anymore.. I tried but couldn't, and remember me feeling the huge amount of pressure of all that torque pushing me against the seat, till we reached my bro's friend n his fam which also drove a Bronco but from the 90s n he got next to him n asked if she was riding with them, he answered yes, n all was good..lol Damn I loved that engine, funny how I never wore the seatbelt..lol My dad ended up cutting them off..lol No worries, that truck could never flip over, stiff suspension, unlike the Explorers..lol I also remember my dad at a red light, it turned green n a white lady in a Miata tried to cut him off n make a left turn, well you know how that went, that Miata skidded all the way to the opposite side of the 3 lane road n it looked totaled, somehow she got out n came to me n asked me if I was ok, I said "yes," but in my head I was like, "lady, I should be asking you that, getting in front of my Bronco like that, I was afraid you were dead"..lol The Bronco was scratch free, dent free, the same cant be said about that import..lol They don't make them like they used to, damn insurance companies..lol
What does he mean by "the paint is uneven"? I've never seen a bronco from this generation that has subpar paint? It looks alright to me in the video? Can someone explain
You can still buy a Ford with manual transfer case linkage, manual hubs, steel wheels and--if I'm not mistaken--manual window lifts. F-250. Yes, some of us still prefer do-it-yourself vehicles. Or, from a philosophical point of view, less is more.
True, but the average transaction price of a truck today is $45000. If it were still being sold today, it would still be cheaper than the average truck.
@@kingdaniel3519 it would also have mandated safety equipment and thus would likely be more expensive (multiple airbags, 4 wheel ABS, stability control and so on). Plus, the market (as a whole) would reject that cheap interior, so that would need higher quality materials just to not get berated by every reviewer.
Yesterday's broncos could be driven on/off road the escape version is perfect for tailgate parties and city and highway but off-road vehicles, not with front wheel drive.
How I wish I had one of these today especially the 87-91 body style seemed like the rust didn't affect the body panels as bad as it did the 92-96 especially here in the midwest ( winter salt)
Just watched the 92 Yukon vid and the stats are nearly the same. Though the narrator seems to sound more disappointed in the Bronco then the GMC. Yet it took GM 4 years and .7L to catch up.

Something I can't figure out 1987 f150 with 302 engine gives 17/24 mpg epa whereas 1987 Broncos with 302 engine gives 11/13 mpg epa. This was also the case with gm k1500 pickup and blazer/Jimmy and suburban. Why is that? I always thought pickups were heavier than SUV counterpart
@@vapecatt I based my assumptions solely off of tv marketing. remember heavy duty built ford tough, 3 or 4 ton, like a rock, etc etc. I remember watching a tv commercial of a dodge ram pickup towing a Chevy and ford pickup , and going over a mountainous hill with ease. @@wildbill23c i cant understand why people think that way. It was hi tech for 1988... that was decades ago. You can make the same comment 30 years from now about todays vehicles.
I respect how you clock your life around your father's passing, says a lot about a man who reveres his dad.
Interior one would find in a Hyundai. LolThat's a huge compliment now.
Indeed
No, it isn't. Hyundai came a long way from what it was, but they're still not better than the other cars on the road. Unless, of course, those cars are old Hyundais. Which, they wouldn't be. Because there's no such thing as old Hyundais still on the road.
Marv exactly Lol
I miss two door truck base SUVs like crazy. i'd get one over a pickup truck if automakers brought them back
I can't wait for the return of the Bronco.
Ianna Natasha me too! But I’m guessing Ford will mess it up and ruin the name and use an eco junk motor that no one wants.
jdslyman I know. There is a place for everything but they are coming with too many bugs and issues. A true 4x4 SUV fan will favor a V8. The ecoboost line is too complicated and finicky and have crazy misfire issues. Trust me I have one. :)
Wash Machine would be great if they use the new 7.0 v8 that ford is replacing the 6.2 v8 with.
@@Chrisw678 The new Bronco is meant for Soccer moms and families not of road fanatics.
charger master look again buddy...
And this episode of Motor Week is brought to you by Chevrolet and the new 1998 Blazer!
cant wait to order a new 2020 Bronco in white
@Roscoe Dogg LOL
Isn't it going to be based off the Ranger and not the F150?
I love the cricket sounds when they aren't too excited about some features!
This is a Great truck! I have been offroading with it weekly for 12 years now. ◇◇
The high beams on the floor is wild.
best*
Those Converse turf shoes are awesome...
Oh hell yeah
Still drive my grandpa’s ‘86 XLT 4x4 with the 5.0 every weekend. Love it
The brights on the on the floor is genius to me. Don’t know why the got rid of it. Helps keep your hand on the wheel
My family had an '89 XLT in Bond White since Feb '95 until Sept '09. Best damn car we ever had. Dad still regrets selling it till this day
Love these videos.
Though it does remind me of all the quality issues and design shortcomings that plague the big 3.
0 to 60 is "impressive at 10 seconds". We've come a LONG way.
Gregory Wills the 5.8 was even better with the Efi in the late 90s hit low 8s seconds.
Gregory Wills We’re also talking about a SUV/truck hybrid not a machine designed for speed, but rather the opposite, pulling power and off road ability
It's a rolling turd! Lol.
10 sec. For that iron ingot, that IS impressive.
@@joev3754 yeah...the 5.8HO hauled ass.
Always loved the bronko
Sure is better than today and looks better
I had a 88 bronco with a 351 I had bought second hand, wish I still had it one of the best 4x4's I ever owned.
I’m thinking of getting one but the one I’m looking at has has a 5.0 but need fuel lines is the back big enough to fit a twin bed? Thinking of use it as a camping vehicle thanks
I still see one of these every so often. Usually pretty rusty and beat, but they still go.
Has anyone actually removed the top, then replaced it without squeaks, leaks, and/or random noises?
That’s EXACTLY how my Jeep is....
I shouldn’t have removed the top for the summer😂
Cool, I just got one of these, same paint job as well... I've only ever owned cars before, and this thing looks like a lot of fun.
I love the vintage converses sneakers the guy is wearing.
OJ. would give it the seal of approval
What does he mean by "the paint is uneven"? I've never seen a bronco from this generation that has subpar paint? It looks alright to me in the video? Can someone explain
My first vehicle was an 85 Ford Bronco xlt Lariat with the 351 Windsor and C6 3-speed Auto. God I loved that truck
i've been waiting for this one for ages!
I had about 100 dollers in the box of my bronco and it burnt down (because i put to much oil in it)and the money was still good that box is fire proof
Father Ford was so good by blessing everyone with all these improvements back in the day.
You can still buy a Ford with manual transfer case linkage, manual hubs, steel wheels and--if I'm not mistaken--manual window lifts. F-250. Yes, some of us still prefer do-it-yourself vehicles. Or, from a philosophical point of view, less is more.
Love my 92 bronco and enjoy the stares I get driving around town burgundy with silver on 33” super swamper boggers
That human bowling ball is really pushing the limits of those jeans.
This is kinda what I was hoping for when I first heard they were bringing back the Bronco.
People say trucks today expensive, but $18,337 in 1988 is equivalent to almost 40K today.
Oh man. I would be so ronco in this bronco back then. Cool.👍👍.
Yesterday's broncos could be driven on/off road the escape version is perfect for tailgate parties and city and highway but off-road vehicles, not with front wheel drive.
A strong and tough old horse
Great vehicle
I like that they throw shade at the horrible factory paint job.
How I wish I had one of these today especially the 87-91 body style seemed like the rust didn't affect the body panels as bad as it did the 92-96 especially here in the midwest ( winter salt)
Drop everything! another retro review is on! Still hoping for them to upload the 80-86 trucks/broncos
These things role like crazy
Well its a truck, not exactly a sports car.
Great looking
I'm thinking about buying a 1988 ford bronco are they reliable?
There gas hogs but built like tanks.
Just watched the 92 Yukon vid and the stats are nearly the same. Though the narrator seems to sound more disappointed in the Bronco then the GMC. Yet it took GM 4 years and .7L to catch up.
my parents had an 86 Bronco man I miss that thing
i remember i was like 12 years old my pops and me went to go check one out i didnt like it back then but as i grew older i fell in love with this 80s style , pops ended up buying a obs suburban i wish i could go back in time and get it, they were asking 1800 lol im 30 now🤣 cant find them nice anymore
I'll take one in gray with base (XL) trim, 300 six, 5-speed, and no options except tilt/cruise and A/C.
Hell yeah! That would be my perfect setup as well. The torquey and smooth inline 6 with three pedals, doesnt get any better than that!
I didn't know the Bronco came with 300, must be rarer than hen's teeth.
@@callumdonington2227 yeah it was only in the early part of the last generation. I think it was discontinued after 1992 or 1993.
How much are this platfu orm Bronco capable of towing in 4wd? I've heard that short wheelbase trucks make the best tow rigs.
No, SUVs are heavier and have worse aerodynamics than pick-up trucks.
@@vapecatt
I based my assumptions solely off of tv marketing. remember heavy duty built ford tough, 3 or 4 ton, like a rock, etc etc. I remember watching a tv commercial of a dodge ram pickup towing a Chevy and ford pickup , and going over a mountainous hill with ease.
I thought pickups had heavier frames and suspension parts. But the gas mileage tells a different story, a story of little girl named bull, and boy named shit.
@@shemailgoondall9531
There always hundreds of factors that come into play when gas mileage is asked. Bumpy roads, computer adjusting, tire ware, engine oil, type of gas, gearing, weather, how much gas is in the gas tank.
To many to list.
1991 Bronco...just got it for $3k and needs a little work with the 5.8...powertrain runs FLAWLESSLY. Yea mileage kinda sucks but my Semi truck gets 6.5 so doesnt make it seem too bad lol. I've gotten a lot done on it my next project is a 300 hp 5.8 to shove in it
Can you guys make a retro video on the 88 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4
I bought one of these new back in 89. It was good to me. If I would of known then what I know now, I would of kept it..
LOVE THE Bronco BRING IT BACK JUST AS IT WAS BUT BETTER
For real though? If I had a time machine, I'd take this with a 351w over a Trackhawk
You're gonna want the payload package with that Motorweek dude in there
I have a 1992 Full Size Bronco. I love it.
