- Episode #106: Julie Mehretu puts the finishing touches on her large-scale painting "Mural" at Goldman Sachs, adjusting shapes and colors in dialogue with the architecture and views from the street.
Julie Mehretu's paintings and drawings refer to elements of mapping and architecture, achieving a calligraphic complexity that resembles turbulent atmospheres and dense social networks. Architectural renderings and aerial views of urban grids enter the work as fragments, losing their real-world specificity and challenging narrow geographic and cultural readings. The paintings' wax-like surfaces-built up over weeks and months in thin translucent layers-have a luminous warmth and spatial depth, with formal qualities of light and space made all the more complex by Mehretu's delicate depictions of fire, explosions, and perspectives in both two and three dimensions. Her works engage the history of nonobjective art-from Constructivism to Futurism-posing contemporary questions about the relationship between utopian impulses and abstraction.

We started with the era of realism the 18th-century arts, that artists were delivering true culture and social messages through their arts. The people, objects, and these arts were and still are popular in modern era. When the trend went to impressionism the artists tried to portray world history, culture, people, and objects at a glance, as if you cannot see things much clearly in the art. As if a person's face is drawn but cannot see the eyes, face, nose, mouth, etc. It means we are gradually shifting from real art to fake art. Impressionists draw portraits with a brush of stroke, not a clear detailing, and much thinking. impressionist painting could require less hard work than realistic art. If artists of realism would exist in the ancient world the world history would be much different, we could see real historical faces and objects but unfortunately, this movement started according to some sources in the 18th century, but I believe natural art has a long history. When it comes to modern arts I feel like the artists become more of imaginary things that are not related to this world. They just want to create arts that inspire a few. Most of the arts that are created do not represent the world culture, history, persons, objects, or any social message. If modern artist claim there is a social message in his/her art to under the art the artist have to explain which to my understanding does not give any logic. They say the arts talk, have a vision, and speak for themselves, modern either is more meaningless, expressionless, emotionless, socialness, attentiveness, attractiveness can be observed if you ask more art lovers. They say artists bring new ideas, portray emotions, see the world from a different angle, present social injustices which these artistic qualities can be observed in the artist's belief in realism.

If there is no narrative, there is no meaning. Something that is meaningless has no effect.

This shit is why there should be $0 art grants.
that's just stupid
