  • this is the video that broke 1000s or hearts and minds. I did this video and said I should do more of these...
    Follow me on Instagram for more awesome Vids. Here is a video of how I burst my guitars. You don't always need to spray to get the desired effect. This is a 5A flame maple top that I stain black and then sand back. Then I add layers of Blue and Black to get it right
    If you like guitar building content and an awesome guy, please like, subscribe and comment on my vids. I try to answer most questions!

    I'm a Luthier as well, but I send my finish work to friend who builds & restores furniture. You really nailed the finish here. Tru Oiling the Mahogany is a great idea. I really like the DC. It's Gibson's sleeper. I think it's the only 2 octave neck Gibson does. Once the fret work is cleaned up, it really is a great guitar.

    Lovely tutorial.
    It's nice to have a plastic binding to stop the dye getting near the mahogany, but I was wondering how you would deal with the stain bleeding into a natural binding. (like PRS) I am about to start an unbound flame maple top using your method of black, then building up the green, but I am concerned that the edges will be difficult to keep perfectly natural maple...any tips?

    Hi BigD. I’m planning on staining a maple wood harp with shades of blue. I was told that maple is difficult to stain without splotching. How do you stain maple without splotching?

  • @Misfitswitch

    Crazy i can not get the black lines in mine. I sand,stain it black and sand. It just fills in the grain with spots and does not have strips like that. Did i not soak it enough? This is on a les paul.

  • @R0cker46
    @R0cker46 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    so was the black dye a water based dye? Or did u just add concentrated dye to water and let the wood soak in the stain? And could one use concentrated dyes with water as a stain? Sorry if i am completely wrong (im sorta a newbie). but if that is so, could one use water with concentrated dyes(mixol) a black yellow and red colors(sunburst) as a stain and then apply sealer and coats of lacquer to the guitar? Thank you for your time, especially if i am completely wrong.

    Very nice, I was just going to do a refin project when I discovered that naptha can no longer be purchased in California. Now I have to order it from StewMac. That is exactly the color I wanted on a Warmoth Strat body. Unfortunately, Warmoth used a turquoise tinted poly coat that turned out to be "jade turquoise". Looked awful and had to have another company strip, re-tint and clear coat it.

    hum , i was thinking of making a manhattan midnight finish(flamed maple veneer) and i wanted to go with a turquoise finish, so i was thinking what if i use green dye instead of black; then sand it back to only show the dyed grain and then put a light blue stain on top making a really tropical looking finish and then finish it off with tung oil. do you thing it would work or shoul i just use the black/blue combo?

    At the end of the video, you have the guitar sanded down with the color you like. What did you do to finalize the body? I plan to do this to an SG, which I believe does not have a binding the way yours does. I'm going to do the same color as yours and just black on the back. Did you just clear coat the guitar after you had the color you liked? DId you clear coat with layers and sand in-between? I hope mine ends up looking like your finished product

    Do you think this would work with a white color on top of the primary black stain? I used some white stain and it looks nice, but the grain doesn't really pop like this. I'm also using curly maple rather than flame maple. I got it from StewMac's arch top top wood. Does this mean the grain won't be as likely to pop like this?

    Can you explain why, particularly on Les Paul style guitars (but on others too) that when it's a flame or quilt top the seam is so visible? Even more so when it's a burst finish? Doesn't matter if it's a $10k guitar, it's very visible. I look at a Gold Top LP and there is zero seam visible. Every now and again I'll see one of a hundred LP's where it isn't visible. Seems to be less prominent on PRS, but it's there on ESP's, Aria Pro II PE's, etc. It doesn't bother me per se, but my woodworking neighbor saw my new LP-style blue burst guitar, and freaked out at the seams like it was bad construction. I figure it can't be if some of the most expensive guitars have it, but I don't know how to explain it to him.

    • @bigdguitars
      @bigdguitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The glue seeps into the wood and causes that line. The more open the grain in the worse it gets. Old Les pauls don’t have it because they used hide glue and the wood had really tightly packed grain. The trees today they don’t let get as old so the grain isn’t as tightly packed.
      When they spray the burst vs hand rub the burst that’s another reason. Usually hand rubbed dyes have a line and the sprayed don’t.
      Hope this helps, thanks for watching an old video!

  • @401ja

    This only works in figured woods. The reason it works is in figured woods like curly the grain is undulating and at times comes up and terminates on the face of the board. This is end grain and is the darker spots in the curl. since end grain takes more dye, you can sand the dye back off the face grain (light areas) and it will stay in the end grain since it went in deeper.

    This technique tends to kill the "flip" in the maple top if you go too dark on the stains. You can get a more lively looking top by doing a lighter top stain and then shooting tinted clear in the same color range over the top. This gives you the best of both worlds. Then you clearcoat everything.

  • @givemeajackson
    @givemeajackson 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    not necessarily. but dont use top-spec expensive materials in your first try, if you mess up it will be a costly mistake. with shome decent pickups and a cheap bodywood like basswod it can sound pretty good. a lot of tone is in the materials, the craftmansship has way more effect on the playability.

How thick is your maple top?I want to do the same thing in black and green.My maple top veneer is super thin(0.006"guesstimate) and I will have to be very careful sanding.I'll probably use 1000 grit just to be safe.Would you suggest going heavy on the black base coat or just enough to make the green "pop"? I'm just looking for a nice contrast,nothing bold. Thanks!
