As someone who got into practical shooting competitions last April (but there was a long period of time where it was cold and then COVID), the information you provide is extremely valuable and I have learned a lot of small but crucial tips. Since I discovered your channel last week I was able to apply some of these and have already seen increases in performance both in my dryfire times and in the match I had this past weekend. Great video... my belt, mag carriers and shot timer came in. But until then I working on the draw and finding proper sight picture.
That’s the foundation of the game - work finding the dot off reload and swing the gun onto a target quickly after the draw firms up
Something I struggle with is large stages where targets can be engaged from multiple positions and keeping track of targets I've already engaged. I'd be interested in seeing how you plan and keep track of those stages.

Time killers - what are the common things that add time to a COF and maybe some drills to reduce those. Another idea, how you go about planning a stage before you shoot.

I like guns as a thing I collect and tinker with and modify, I want to shoot competitively so I can actually have them do the thing they're supposed to. I'm gonna be a lil bit embarrassed showing up with a gun that very very much outclasses me

Thank you for your insight; I'm jumping into a self defense lifestyle on a pretty strict budget and your videos have been amazing! Maybe doing a video for those on tight budgets would be a good idea.
single biggest piece of advice is don't chase fads and buy quality. A $35 holster you will eventually get sick of - that $75-130 holster is a LOT of money - but if you consider how long you can use it - it's fine. Buying one $500 gun with one $75 holster in 2 years versus buying 2-3 $350 guns and 3-5 $30-50 holsters is a lot more expensive under the guise of saving money. And dryfire is free!

I’ve struggled with training transitions in dry fire, and translating that to live fire. Also accuracy with partial targets.
Great video! Made me feel so much better when you said your first match on video you will look so slow. Watching my first match it was literally like slow motion!
Something I struggle with right now is trying to balance accuracy and pushing speed. I can go a lot faster but accuracy and PD go to hell in a hand basket. When accuracy goes up speed comes way down. Been working on quicker sight picture acquisition and cleaner but quicker trigger press and cleaning up my grip. Hoping over time it translates to faster times.
cleaning up your index is the name of the game - that speeds up the first shot - the second shot is how squared away your grip / wrist lock is and how much you can trust it.
I shoot Steel challenge right now but I've been thinking about trying a uspsa match. Thank you.

Great stuff as always! At 3 - 3:10 you mentioned bringing up on being on target with having to make adjustments. This is for what size target, and at what distance?
I would like to see a video on target acquisition - quickly obtaining your irons aligned.
Your issue is referred to as index - you aren’t locking your wrists and using consistent grip pressure every time you pick up the gun.
I would love a video about translating skills from indoor, static range to shooting on the move and/or on multiple targets. Also how to train for practical shooting in indoor ranges would be useful. Keep up the good work, your channel is awesome!

This is great info, and I appreciate you taking the time to help us newbies out. I started shooting IPSC in April, but every single match for the year has been cancelled due to the pandemic, so I'm stuck with practicing on my own until next year. Any help regarding drills or simple diy stages without a lot of equipment would be much appreciated.

Got mostly steel targets, two 4" steel plates, a 6", and two 12" on fencepost mounts.

Should I get some pepper poppers and cardboard targets? How do I set up a range and measure my times so I can compete against myself and close friends?

Your instruction videos are really good. The way you explain things makes it really easy to understand the hows and the whys. Thank you! Can you say what type of competition would be best for someone with more limited mobility (bad knees or hips, back trouble, etc.). I'd like to get involved in some type of competition, but I don't think running and gunning is in the cards for me at this stage of my life. Is there a class of competition that requires a bit less of that sort of thing?
Steel challenge is drag racing with pistols mostly standing still - there is one stage with 4 yards of movement - it would be perfect

@@TheHumbleMarksman actually there is. Is there a website were i can find configuration of targets, so i can practice idpa? Ive recently bought about 11 paper target stands and i have five steel silhouette.
cody penick you might practice the IDPA long form classifier. Study your times/ hits and let that inform you of the micro skills you need to be practicing. USPSA has many classifiers with known hit factors and scaled dimensions. USPSA.org/classifiers there are lots of killer classifiers there - and since you can know what the “high score” is you can work backward into getting it. Front sight, front sight 2, el prez, roscoe rattle, madness, down the middle, pucker factor are all good skills tests

Back in the late seventies and early eighties, this was for working people that had limited time and money for practice. Off the shelf guns, street holsters, etc. Of the 8 divisions, there are maybe two that I can participate in. Everything else is "spend as much money as humanly possible." That just drives people away.

You should investigate the center axis relock system created by Paul Castle and taught by natural tactical(yt channel) Seriously its really interesting in how it was developed.
While that looks super cool in John Wick - I'm not aware of it being used in any serious capacity. I'll look into it - it might be a fun video.

I have to admit YES I got through this crazy spending on holsters, and new guns. All type of handguns. Learned my lessons hard way and brought it to making smart decisions when I buy my rifle. 3 rifles vs 12 hand guns. I was there too :). Your channel attracted me and helped start shooting competitively. Thank you for that. However, I hope you are exceptional, but I have seen many great/good shooters who turned from shooting sport to became sales representatives through the sport of shooting. This personally makes me abandon channels like that. Initially I like someone a sportsman. Not internet promoter or sales representative. I will stick to your channel as long as I learn from you whom I highly respect as a great shooters first!

@@TheHumbleMarksman thank you for your replay, I am shooting 124g fmj 355” with a 10.5lb recoil spring, I would like try the 147g with 9lb and see if there is any improvement, a friend tell me that everybody all round using 147 with 9lb…. Do you think can help this size of bullet to have lees recoil?
There are par timers on the app store for Android. I don't have an iPhone but I'm sure they have them for those as well. And they're free.
They suck for live fire

They are useable but the form factor of a shot timer is better. Everyone is going to end up with one eventually
I agree the shot timer is necessary for live fire practice. I just broke down and got one myself. I still use an Android app for dry fire though. It's called Dry Fire Par Timer. Way more options to it.

Which Glock parts are worth upgrading? I'm really on the fence with striker and plunger (I always do 5lb striker spring and lightweight plunger spring, the 4.5 doesn't feel right to me)
This guy's channel has some videos on alternate connectors you can try for a different trigger feel.
Depends on the character you want for the trigger. 3 and 3.5# connectors will ease of on the pull weight but trade the firmness of the wall for a creepier wall. The other thing to consider is how the connector is finished - a TIN or NP3 coated connector will feel smoother longer (between cleanings) than will a polished stainless. A polished plunger with a lightened spring will help smooth out the takeup and help improve the trigger pull feel. A polished firing pin lug (without modifying geometry!) will further increase the quality of the pull/ release. The edge of the cruciform needs a good bit of polishing/smoothing to provide a high quality feel. If the firing pin is extended you can safely use a 4# or 4.5# spring without risk of going ammo sensitive.

About the starting portion of the video: if I don’t have a gun yet, is there some pistols which are more indicated for novice shooters than others?
Pistols don't necessarily matter for the experience of a shooter. I'd suggest the P320 X Five Legion or the Canik TP9SFX depending on your means. Assuming you want to shoot 9mm in Carry Optics or Production (or any of the IDPA divisions except CDP)
TheHumbleMarksman yep you assume correctly, but in Italy where I live the X5 legion is not imported and the Canik is not as budget friendly as in the USA. For the equivalent of 150$ more I can get a used shadow 2 with 250 rounds trough it, so I was thinking about that...
I am new to competitive shooting. I have only shot at 2 IDPA practices. Going to my 3rd this week. I don’t have reasonable access to USPSA without driving more than an hour. I take the philosophy shoot what is available. Someday I hope to try USPSA when it is more available to me. I am currently working dry practice with grip, draw, acquiring sites, and mag reloads. Kind of like learning to walk again 😂. Any content for people new to this is always welcome. Thanks for sharing what you know!!
One thing you can do is to rise to power within your club then approach them about starting a USPSA match on off weekends - provided there are enough people in your area to help facilitate the matches. What usually happens is that's the way it starts then the IDPA club starts to fade and the USPSA quickly eclipses it and surpasses it. Our match is a spin off match from an IDPA club. We hold one match a month to the 3-4 on the IDPA side of the house - we represent 25% of the revenue to the club and our typical draw is about 1.25-1.5X their typical draw, and we're only about 3-4 years old versus 10+.
That said - it's very easy to satisfy yourself with being mediocre shooting IDPA - because there just aren't that many elites who shoot the game and you'll likely not be exposed to them outside of national matches. I don't say that to poopoo IDPA - but if you're focused on "this is good enough to win my match" versus "this is the limit of what's humanly possible" - one generates better results than the other. I "lost" two years and a half years of training time in IDPA.
Don't get me wrong - I'm coming at that from a competitive perspective and trying to be as good as I can be. My IDPA career made me a very competent gun handler and far more squared away than your typical square ranger / concealed carrier - but the return on investment for time / Ammo has been richer on the USPSA side of the house.
All of that to say - yes shoot IDPA if you that's what's available!

I am kind of amazed there are not more USPSA clubs in the state of Michigan. I expected more places to choose from, especially when I hear how popular they can be over IDPA. How do the shooting sports exist financially? Dues and fees? I see the major sports draw an audience, but the shooting sports don't, so sponsorship doesn't seem large enough to keep multiple divisions afloat..
USPSA has an activity model. Each match someone shoots they pay a small fee to USPSA - and for their classifiers to count they have to have an annual membership. IDPA has a membership model and they take fees from major matches so I'm told. Competitor fees generally cover range fees associated with the facility. A club match is $20-30 and a major is $140-200 with Area matches being $200-$250 and nationals last year was $285 I think.
What was that guy doing at 8:35? Seems really dangerous for him to be there.
he was waiting to get up range and reset. he was behind my 180 so I wasn't likely to point the gun at him and the wide angle lens of the hat cam makes it look like he's further uprange than he was. There's an element of predictability with seasoned shooters on a course of fire - he knew where the targets were and what I was shooting at - he wasn't likely to put himself in danger and I sure wasn't going to point a gun at him.

yeah for sure. The RO had a chat with me - he wasn't 100% at the time it happened so I got to stay in the match but it was a "I'm pretty sure you broke the 180 but not 100%." I texted him after the match when I saw the footage and confirmed it.
At least 10 minutes of dryfire a day. 10-4! Any dryfire drills you like?
I am doing 2 a days - I spend 5 minutes bringing my ahnds together fo ra draw with the dot arriving exactly where I'm looking on target, then I spend 5 minutes seating the magazine after a reload then reacquring grip/dot on the target.

Quality places to practice for competition is a huge problem. I'm incredibly fortunate that my club has no fudd rules against draws or 3 seconds between shots etc. Plus, there's next to no active pistol shooters, so 75% of the time the range is empty so I can work on my movement and set up stages. But most people are not so fortunate, especially here in the east. Out west I've heard millions of people have access to BLM land to shoot on. At least here in Pennsylvania, our public lands ban shooting/archery unless you're hunting.

Yes - but I only reload for my open gun now - I bite the bullet for 9 minor as I'm too lazy to swap the press over from 9 major

If you use a snap cap, o ring, or if it’s a striker use a piece of card stock to hold it out of battery- yes dryfire

In TX it does! It’s hot and dusty- can’t reapply sunscreen after about 30 mins on the range
L VR you get dusty on the range in about 30 mins to the point you can’t reapply sunscreen. So hide from the sun. Second - a good drifit type cloth will help you cook off sweat and cool you off. Looks dumb- works
