It just puts chills through my body over and over the album would play one side in the next night. It would be the other side. I miss those days... By myself, some albums again start a new collection. They're everywhere and they're better sounding than CDAI computer system. It's all mono. There's no algorithms cuz they're not instruments

Hello...I was lucky enough to run a record shop in the late eighties in the north of England. Manchester to be specific. The Hacienda was the place to go..the early start of the Madchester scene. I was given a demo tape of the Stone Roses to listen to and my world shifted slightly out of balance. In the ten years of running this amazing shop and the thousands of people who brought whatever music that gave them pleasure fills me with a gentle happiness. Over thirty years have passed now...and all the weird..and strange..and magical..and emotive..and very special sounds..still resonate not only in my ears but in my soul. I was lucky enough to hear and meet a young Al Stewart when I was sixteen...I am 65 now ( it's more impressive in expressed numbers!)...How wonderful to listen to Year of the Cat and remember the first time you ever heard it! Life at the end of the day aint that bad.

Best produced song ever recorded. The instrumentation alone..piano intro, string interlude, guitar solo, sax break, it’s got everything. Great sounding record. AS was never a great vocalist but it’s hard to imagine anyone else on this one. It all just fits into a majestic masterpiece of a song. The lyrics tell a great story as well. I remember when it was released and was on the radio a lot. Sounded great on AM radio in a single speaker car unit. It’s one of those songs that just hits me in the heart every time I hear it. Awesome piece of work.

This song is hot-wired into my college years. In January of 1977, Bethany College Male Chorus was going on tour through St. Louis. We were a tiny school from West Virginia. When we gathered after Christmas for a few days of practice, my buddy called me over to the piano and said, "You have got to hear this song." He played the intro riff, and I was hooked. Our bus was crawling slowly across the pains in a blizzard for twelve hours, and we played Spades the entire time. It went by in a flash. We also had five guys that could hoop, and when we got to St. Louis, we trudged through the snow to a YMCA and beat every team that we faced that afternoon. When I hear this song, all of these memories come flooding back to me; as clear as the day that they occurred. We were young, alive and every day was an adventure. The best of times.

Al Stewart is a British singer- songwriter that recorded the title track from the album " Year of the Cat" at Abbey Road Studios in London by engineer Alan Parsons. The song peaked at #5 on Billboards Chart on February 19, 1977., and his next song "Time Passages" went to #10 on December 16, 1978. Nice pick guys.

Guys! I pray you read this post. Let me try to help you with some history. First of all, I saw his band perform this whole album LIVE at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia back in 1976. Unfortunately Al Stewart was never really well received in America and FM radio at the time, did not give him a lot of air time either. There is a story that he briefly shared an apartment with Paul Simon in New York and Paul helped Al with chord structures and helped him develop his songwriting. This album is, and always has been an underrated piece of poetic story-telling at its finest. Stewart's own background as a History Major helped him launch his musical songwriting clearly evident on his previous album; "Past, Present, and Future" which I STRONGLY recommend you listen to. Please replay this track! If you listen closely, and dissect it, you will notice that this song features no less than 4 solo's: an acoustic guitar, an electric lead-guitar, and two sax solo's. Guys! Find me ANY song or artist today: Who DOES THAT? Andy, I know that you are a guitar freak and by your own expressions, you got it on this one. Alex....it's not a BANGER.....it's a frickin CLASSIC! Give this another chance, Buddy. They don't make music like this anymore and 45 years later, every time I still hear this song, it STILL speaks to me, It's STILL a CLASSIC. Thanks for featuring it. Be Blessed.

Al Stewart is one of the few songwriters who writes about history. His greatest achievement in that category is arguably "Roads to Moscow", a description of the Nazi/Soviet front during World War II, all from the point of view of one Soviet soldier. For a "pop tune", it's epic. And it's the only song I know that calls out German General Heinz Guderian. If you know any folks who play war games, this song is part of their normal rotation.

You haven't heard Al Stewart until you listen to his "Past, Present, and Future" album. His finest, I think. Listen to: "Roads to Moscow" and "Nostradamus" from that album. Those two songs are epic.

As a rocker who was graduating from high school when this song was released, I've always loved the tranquil mood of this song. I'm proud to say it's still in my "Stranded on a Desert Island" playlist even after all these years. It's pure musical poetry, and it can still carry me away in like few other songs can. Al did some great songs without him, but Al Stewart and Alan Parsons made a great team. I also recommend "On the Border" and "Lord Grenville" from this album. You should also check out "Time Passages", and "Man for all Seasons" from the album "Time Passages" which is another Stewart-Parsons team up.

    Lyrics
On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
    Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain
    Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat
She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
    Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
    The year of the cat
While she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
    The year of the cat
Well morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice you've lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the newborn day
You know sometime you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat

There were we, aged 17 in 1976 trying to expand our music tastes into the wild stuff. Then songs like this came along, and we had to realise our feet had to remain in more than one camp. How could you disregard quality such as this?
