Mark is basically screaming uncomfortable truths at us, the things we are afraid to face, while Simone is looking for self growth regarding whatever issue Mark is talking about. The third voice, the choire, has the role of hinting at hidden(often literally by being in Latin), higher and spiritual truths regarding the issue that can inform Simone(and us) on ways to move past whatever blockage is in our way.
Many of their songs follow this structure, but sometimes they switch it up and Mark is the voice of reason while Simone is naive or even egotistical. In other songs Simone's lyrics can represent the highest wisdom, like a deity talking sense to her children, while Mark basically lists all the ways we fool ourself personally or as a society.
It's worth noting that Mark has a Master's in Psychology, and their song's are very much an outhgrowth of his profession.
In this particular song I interprete it as being about the fast paced, stressful rat race of modern life, and how it hinders happiness and ultimately traps us in a state of no self realisation.

I love that you noticed the juxtaposition! The singing style that Simone and Mark use is called “Beauty and the Beast,” and it was first pioneered by another metal group, Theatre of Tragedy, in the 90s. Symphonic metal has sort of adapted it for their own means, but Epica is probably the most well-known symphonic metal band that uses the style. Mark’s growls are difficult to understand at first, I certainly agree - he is not particularly renowned for them, either, as it took him a while to nail what sound he was going for - but as you listen to more symphonic metal with growls (and I hope that you do!), they will become easier to understand.
In terms of the meaning, you were just about spot on. However, in the beginning, Mark’s “character,” per say, is really acting as society’s problematic individuals - those who are too focused on ambition and greed, and whose only goal is to make money and move up in life. Simone’s “character” spends much of the song questioning the value of such a lifestyle, and then the band hits their message home at the end: there is more to life than higher positions, lol. I’m glad that you chose to look at the lyrics though, because they are a huge part of the genre, and not every reactor thinks of doing the same!
Lastly, as other commenters have noted, Consign to Oblivion is not always the best place to start with Epica, but considering you have actually started to delve into their works, I am still pleased. Most reactors hear Nightwish, hear Epica’s Sandra Terra, and call it a day; however, Epica has many many other musical gems, the majority of which do not feature Mark as heavily. If you would like to hear some other interesting songs, I have a few recommendations:
Chasing the Dragon, live at Retrospect
Design Your Universe, live at Zenith
Cry for the Moon in the recording studio (this is a very old video, but it shows just how young Simone is, and how much her voice has developed since the video was made)
Any of the Kingdom of Heaven trilogy (which together make up close to 40 minutes of music): some Epica fans are not as fond of The Quantum Enigma, KoH part 2, but I find that the entire trilogy is a wonderful representation of all the band has to offer. As others have said, the third part just came out in Epica’s latest album earlier this year, and the band recently released a “live” recording of many of the new album’s songs called Omega Live. It, too, would be worth checking out.
Thank you for this amazing reaction, and I hope to see more Epica in the future!

I noticed that you reacted to Sancta Terra with Floor a few months ago, which is one of the songs in Epica´s repertoire that does not have any harsh vocals in it. And this is one of the few songs in which they are prevalent. It is quite an old song as it is from Epica´s second album (with the same name) (the band released its 8th this year), which came out in 2005 (the band was founded in 2003). It was the heaviest song back then. It is almost invariably the last song during shows - to end with a bang, literally. Simone´s vocal lines in this were written in the way to take a full advantage of her head voice, which was the most developed part of her voice at that point in time (her backing vocalists took care of the rest). She has spent years by developing other areas of her voice since then, of course. Hopefully, this does not scare you away from Epica´s music for ever.
As an opera singer, it might be of interest to you that Mark Jansen (one of the Epica´s founders and the growling guitarist on the left) founded a supergroup called MaYaN in 2010, which actually has an opera singer from Italy named Laura Macri as one of its five vocalists. 🙂But it is fair to say that MaYaN is more brutal than Epica - symphonic death metal. There are some quality vocal coaches on TH-cam that teach growling and screaming if you would like to find out more.

As a huge Epica fan I have to admit it puzzels me why people would suggest this particular performance as a first introduction to EPICA when the vast majority of their music is so much more melodic, and much more focused on Simone's vocals, I know that Jess is pretty open minded musically, I hope this doesn't put her off listening to some of the more beautiful, stunning compositions that we all know and love from this band

I would probably go for the other one Epica recorded in Zenith. I mean Simone is, at least, present there during the whole song, which is not the case with Consign to Oblivion. 🙂 I suspect it might have been chosen because somebody wanted to compare this reaction to others made by creators who focus on vocals. In such a case, this song is the only choice, which is a bit sad.

The host of the Kardavox Academy YT channel teaches harsh vocals, so I highly recommend his channel if you want to learn more about those techniques. Thank you for the great reaction. When opposing vocals in Epica songs, Simone is usually the voice of explanation, questioning, investigation, resolution and light. Mark is usually the voice of injuction, wake up calls, directness, command and darkness. The goal of the song is usually to arrive at an harmony between the two approaches. This is *super* evident in the songs Abyss of Time and The Skeleton Key.

RE: you question about techniques for harsh vocals. Melissa Cross is perhaps the godmother of harsh vocal coaches, and she is very very busy (as you can imagine). I believe she has done some interviews with YT vocal coach reactors, so you might search out nuggets of wisdom in that manner. From what I gather from reading moth uptodate books on vocals and doing some research as directed by a few vocal coaches, there is a large opportunity for filling in our knowledge-base on the myriad of techniques that are used.
I'm a head-n-neck anatomy/physiology nerd (general dentist with a focus on pathology at the U/faculty level in the early 2000s) but while we can identify "which tissues are responsible for certain sounds", our knowledge of how to direct/which innervation is driving the process hasn't been completely verified (i.e. since their is a fair amount of variability in CN innervation/pathways/'sympathetic innervation', etc, as well as actual volumes of air being moved... it varies quite a bit between techniques) there might be some intuitive techniques being used out there on stage that are not yet fully documented/understood. I know there's been talk between some coaches and practitioners about doing specific laryngeal visualization sessions in a med-environment (where all kinds of attributes can be monitored) but I don't think they've happened yet.... I would love to be a fly on that wall.
But hey, I was looking into this during the first half of the year... much could have changed since then.

I'm totally loving that you're doing the interpretation of the lyrics at the same time. That's awesome. What you might be missing is that some of Simone's verses are actually choir verses. There are some other videos where you can see them live with choir and orchestra and it's easier to notice. To me, that's a third "character" in most of Epica songs. Thanks for this great video!

This is one of my favourite Epica songs! A perfect ending to their concerts. I found your interpretation of the beginning of Simone's lyrics interesting! I always have imagined is as her demanding "how can we let this happen?" basically, how can we just sit back and do nothing. And then like you said Mark contrasts that by saying we got bills to pay etc.
I really enjoy your reactions, and you pick up on a lot of interesting things that I normally wouldn't!

I just love your insights and meticulos explanations. Also thank you for focusing on the Lyrics, trying to figure out why some parts are arranged the way they are around them, these aspects are usually bypassed but in the symphonic genre it's vital for the comprehension of the songs, especially with Epica.
I'd recommend though to dive into their "Omega Alive" show, which has been recently released. Vocals are all live even if the show has been prerecorded.
Also I'd recommend another metal dutch singer, Dianne van Giersbergen (not related to the Anneke though) which is a classically trained singer, which has a very interesting voice and also writing skills, shown in her "Exlibris" project.

      @@jessicasopranonotes Hi Jess.
I hope you're going through all comments.. We Epicans are giving you some great suggestions ;)
"Consign to Oblivion" is one of their heaviest songs with most harsh vocals and little of Simone's singing (not her best performance of this song either). But if you survived this without any harm, then you can now react to anything from Epica, lol!
"Kingdom of Heaven part 3" from their online streaming concert "Omega Alive" is a mindblowing performance. I bet you've never seen anything like that. The production is insane. The song itself is a masterpiece of symphonic metal. 13 minutes of pure brilliance.
If you'd like to focus on Simone, go for their old orchestral ballads (no metal at all), like "Trois Vierges" or "Safeguard to Paradise". Epica musical compositions and orchestral arrangements are top-notch! Find lyrics videos.

    • @cancelled_user
      @cancelled_user 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jessicasopranonotes And if you'd like to go to the very beginning of Epica, check something from their 2004 live TV studio session. Simone was just 19 and she used to sing differently back then! Allegedly one of her early vocal coaches told her she was a mezzo, so she tried to sing like a mezzo. For you as a professional opera singer, it may sound odd and even Simone says she can't listen to her voice from that early era, but lots of fans, including myself, are totally in love with that voice because it was unique! Maybe "wrong" but beautiful, very warm and ethereal. Simone has improved over years, spent a lot of time with training, but that young Simone's voice was simply special. I never loved any other soprano that much. Combined with the incredible musical compositions of Epica, it's what makes this band stand out.
If you'd like to hear 19 y.o. Simone, search up "Cry For the Moon 4k". Make sure it's a new remastered 4K or at least HD video! Not the old 240p video with distorted sound! They also covered "Memory" from musical Cats (again 4K version). If you want something acoustic, just Simone, choir and piano, try "Feint (acoustic) 4K".

I believe that harsh vocals are achieved by pushing air through the vestibular folds and making everything vibrate in there....Vocal chords actually do not come together, they stay open.. But im not entirely sure. You need great support and tons of breath control though. As for teaching it, Angela Gossow (ex Arch Enemy singer) would be my go to.

There are different ways to learn harsh vocals as there are different styles. One of the common ones is called false cord scream and it is not as difficult to learn basics of it - not to master it, mind you. It still needs a robust breath support.
Here is an introduction to it by Marcela Bovio from MaYaN (among other projects; Ayreon would be another one): Interview with Marcela Bovio at FemME 2016
And another one by vocalist Linzey Rae: Screaming Vocal Tutorial With Mom

To make you more curious about it, I will tell you, that there are some female vocalists, who can do it too. Ie Floor Jansen in song "Yours is an empty hope". Maybe vocalists who do both "clean" singing and harsh vocals would be interesting for you to listen to.
First, Floor Jansen does some on the song 'Yours is an Empty Hope'.
    Probably unavoidable are:
Tatiana Shmailyuk of Jinjer (I recommend 'Perennial live at Wacken')
and Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox (good start would be 'Spiritbox - Rule of Nines - Courtney LaPlante live one take performance' ("for singin' and then some screamin' and then some singin' and more screamin' "...it's a meme by now)
Oh, also on the topic of harsh vocals, right now someone will murder me if I don't mention Will Ramos of Lorna Shore. He uploaded a one take performance of "To the Hellfire" which is good.

my favorite epica song is Cry for the Moon:. the version of 16 years ago with orchestra. Simone had a lower more mezzo voice then. Continues melody line.
But I like their new work as well. For instance Storm the Sorrow: about overcoming mysophobia, fear of contamination. She got this fobia after really catching a dangeroys bacteria and getting very sick. And in latin america fans try to touch her and she was accused of beeing arrogant but the song explains she actually had this issue for a while.

There are (too) many great Epica to suggest, however their magnum opus is without doubt "Kingdom of Heaven part 3" th-cam.com/video/BdBCVMD8TiM/w-d-xo.html
The harsh vocals in Epica are done by Mark Jansen who is also the founder of Epica. It is worthwhile also checking Mark's side project called "MaYaN". MaYaN 's style is labelled as Symphinic Death Metal and it is even heavier than Epica, but sill very symphonic. One grea live video from them is "Rebirth from Despair" featuring no less than 5 vocalists including 2 female sopranos one of which also being a professional opera singer. th-cam.com/video/u5TQqUD74OE/w-d-xo.html

the singer / Guitarist is Mark Jansen he founded Epica in 2002 after his departure from After Forever ( the band Floor was in too , you should listen to them you get to hear mark and floor in stead of simone and mark ) if you like this you should listen to other great Dutch bands in the same era like with in temptation with the pixy queen songs mother earth or snow queen or the gathering, ( Ayreon. you already did :P ) you should move to Europe and find a metal band that matches your voice and style. I know you would sound great with a rock band backing you on stage . cool alternative rock has bin coming from Europe for years now :) And life is a lot better across the pond . less rent more vacation days and free time to perfect your dreams

There is an opera singer named Charly Calotta from New York who also has a reaction channel (Big Brain Singer), and who got interested in guttural singing after seeing Floor Jansen doing it. Maybe contact him, you two share some common interest. Doing it properly uses only the false vocal cords with clean/melodic vocal techniques. Doing it wrong ruins your vocal cords.
