- Today we walk the second of our last walks along the Montgomery canal, where we start in Berriew, passing over a wonderful aqueduct where we reach the end of the 12 mile isolated navigable stretch in Refail, at which we meet the first of many lowered road bridges, something all too common for this section of canal..

Brilliant set of vlogs, thank you! This one is full of contrasts, absolutely stunning views, quaint cottages on the on hand then on the other, derelict ramshackle buildings & yards, and the ever present A483!! I hate road noise but sadly we need them, not least to get to some of these beautiful locations! Lol!
It's pronounced "Berry-you" not ba-roo.
I live round here, it is a lovely canal walk. It links into a nice walk along the river as well where the aqua duct is.

So much for British Heritage then,British waterways,council. Such a waste to all those that built that canal. We remember the people in war but not the pioneer's that made the country worth fighting for and rising for. Utter shame. Good on yer for showing this,I bet the road gets looked after.
Yes I know we are hoping the 16 million pound fund will go alot towards the restoration it will be beautiful 😍

That would be great. In a few years maybe we will beable to cruise Olive along it can't wait.
Mother and son, brought some new fishing geer to daddy, so please enough he is Just happy, please secure the rods and fishing gear next time. Fishing magnet or draghook on a rope .
He left fishing rod and reel on the roof again and I was driving Olive so nearly lost it again in a tree. I actually did do 2 locks for the first time today and done well. Practice makes perfect. It's a great time for me to Practice as it's very quiet now. Josh and I keep telling Andy when we cruise put the fishing rods inside but he never listens lol 😆
@@darkmatterxi we all getting older and forget about things, use an elastic band or clips for the rods, get a fishing magnet and drag hook. Making bread dough hè whil never drop down, joke. Keep on boating plus fishing frendly, , take care
We do have a fishing magnet but knowing us I think it would be safer to put them inside Olive while cruising as it gets expensive 😀

We were last in Abermule at the beginning of October and the canal was very overgrown, looks like they have done some work on it. The bridge there is only the second cast iron bridge to be built in Montgomeryshire.
The bridge was lovely. Actually Josh and I throughly enjoyed every walk on the Montgomery. It was stunning.

This has been a fascinating series of vlogs. If they manage to reopen the Montgomery canal it would rate as one of the most beautiful canals in the UK. Thank you.
I know that's what we think it's absolutely beautiful as I keep saying on the vlogs. I am like a broken record. I didn't realise how many times I said it was absolutely beautiful 😍
An area very close to my heart. When traffic speed was increasing after the war, the bridges started to get dangerous and some were demolished and the canal routed under the road, rendering it unavigable. Bridge 132, Nags head - crane operator swinging a big iron ball, had already had a few bashes, saw a young woman standing on the opposite bank, asked her if she'd like to be the last person to cross the bridge, she did so, he polished it off. That's how my parents met! They were married in Berriew (Pron "berry-oo"). Just a bit further along your walk, opposite the fron, you walked past my grandmother's farm, Wern y Beddyn, where we used to spend the whole summer holidays. Thank you for this wonderful footage.
So glad we could bring some wonderful memories back to you John. All of these walks have been lovely and what a beautiful canal the Montgomery is. We loved every minute of it especially showing all you guys how beautiful it is.

Did you know that in August budget the chancellor set aside £17 million to reopen the Montgomery canal?
Some time in the future all the way to Newtown. Three new road bridges amongst other essential work. I hope it does not take too long. I have just taken a Three year mooring from the C&RT right by the Navigation Inn service point.

Yes we did know about the 16 million fund for the restoration of the Montgomery. We mentioned it in one of the vlogs one of our viewers told us. Maybe they got it wrong is it 17 Million just hope it's done in a few years and we can take Olive up there. Fingers crossed 🤞

I Cant see them getting all the work done to reopen the Montgomery, Hope you didn't have to wait too long to get your lift back.
We had to wait quite a while Andy was asleep after early morning shift at work so he wasn't answering his phone. Turned up after about an hour we were freezing.

I don't think the plan is to link back up to newtown. Too many road crossings. Would be great though.
