    You can literally make fuel from anything including oils from vegetable and animal fats. It's amazing!

    That reaction is usually run hot, in excess of 60 deg C. I don't think your conversion will be very great even if you do wait a couple hours

    It's good practice to vent the funnel every so often.

    I have a very important question... which is that creatine powder is made from sarcosine and cinnamide. Q1: Is glycerin the same as sarcosine, which is used in the manufacture of creatine? Q2: Is it vegetarian or animal?

    I'm making a shaving soap and want to add glycerin to it to improve the lathering properties. I have a big can of palm oil that I can use. Would crude glycerin be possible to use for shaving soap or is it dangerous in the crude state? By the way thanks for the kickass video! Love your setup!

      LOL !! Thank you, all of my demonstrations are experimental. To answer your question, personally, I would not use the glycerin I made in the lab because it is not "food grade" meaning it's not exactly safe to use on your skin or in soap/beauty products. I've made experimental soap in the past off camera and I was scared to use it because I'm working with pure grade laboratory chemicals. Honestly, I would just buy some glycerin at the store and make soap that isn't contaminated with other laboratory chemicals. Thank you for your winning thoughts!!

      Also, I will add that it is "theoretically" possible yes, but your final product will be "crude," and I wouldn't use it on your skin. Keyword: Crude=Not very pure.

      @@primordialsoup8570 Thank you for the response! I've made a bunch of shaving soap with water and pure NaOH before and it never hurt my skin what so ever but I guess the crude Glycerin could hold some of the NaOH after the seperation. Well, I will be looking into buying some instead of distilling it as it seems to involve pressurizing the crude Glycerin during boiling, something I clearly can not do at home.

      @@asleepghoulshow Your welcome! Yes, I am concerned that your crude extract would contain traces of NaOH(aq), which is dangers to handle! Be safe and curious : )

    can this be used in detergent ? is this the same as extracting glycerin from soap ? sorry super new to all this chemistry

    Great video, but two points on safety. 1-handling that without gloves made me cringe, and especially when you grabbed your goggles without at least washing your hands. 2-your work surface needs a waterproof surface (disposable?), such as waxed paper, or butcher paper, to prevent the obviously spilled various chemicals from mixing with previous experiments. God knows what you might form on there. But FWIW I've seen fume hoods in university that were far worse, horrifying in fact.

    How can glycerin be purified?

    If you distilled this would it clean it up a bit?

      Distillation is used to separate and collect different products based on their boiling points. Great point! I could make an upcoming video on it for you! : )

      You would need vacuum distillation but this would be really good to see.

    can i use ethanol instead of methanol ?

    • @primordialsoup8570
      @primordialsoup8570  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! Personally, I would only use methanol (+ KOH) to create a "methyl ester" and glycerol as the products. !Use caution! as I would love to hear what your results are if you decided to replicate this experiment using ethanol. Submit your results in the comment section! : )

    • @primordialsoup8570
      @primordialsoup8570  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Instead of the products being "methyl ester" and glycerol, it would be "ethyl ester + glycerol," but you would have to mix ethanol and potassium hydroxide to create the ethyl ester molecule.

      Hi, yes you can use Ethanol instead Methanol in order to obtain Ethyl-biodiesel + crude glycerol (Glycerol + water + excess of Lye + Soap + mono and di-glycerides ... and some other product from oil as pigment, vit, etc etc ...) .
      In my country Methanol is very difficult to find, and expensive.
      Ethanol is easier to find ... but too expensive.
      As source of Ethanol, I use ... E85 gasoline ( about 0.65 Euro/liter) which countains, depending season, about 80 % of alcohol (75-85 %) ... mainly Ethanol (with some % of Methanol and propanol because of proccess to obtain Ethanol for E85 gasoline).
      I filter then heat the oil (Waste vegerable oil from restaurants) over 100°C in order to eliminate water (VERY IMPORTANT or you will produce soap).
      In same time I prepare ethoxide solution based on a mix of NaOH and E85 in a PE canister (shake them together, then let Lye dissolve and mix together with E85 at room temperature).
      When temperature of oil decrease and reach about 50°C , I add the Ethoxide solution and mix them together with hot oil.
      After about 8 hours you can observe the crude glycerol settled at the bottom of bottle.
      For 1 liter of Wast Vegetable Oil (about 900 grams) you need about 300 grams (about 375 ml) of E85 (in order to obtain good ratio 1/6 oil/alcohol for transesterification) + about 6.5 grams of NaOH.
      If transesterification reaction does not start after 8 hours simply add about 50 ml of saturated solution of NaOH in E85 (prepared in a glas jar).
      You juste need to separate crude glycerol from crude biodiesel.
      If you wanna use Ethyl-Biodiesel as fuel for your car, you have to "wash" the crude biodiesel several time in order to eliminate soap, lye ans other by products of reaction until wash water is clear, and not turbid.
      Then you have to heat washed and cleaned biodiesel over 100°C in order to eliminate water from it.
      I hope it help you.
