    In most thrift stores they have an electrical testing station you can use. And some tapes, cds, vhs etc you can try. Nothing worse than not being able to return an item or stuck using credit in the same amount.

    I had this exact deck in my youth. Can confirm the 1981 production date. I bought it a store on Yonge st. in downtown Toronto. I think the price was around $130 to $150 at the time. Used the dual mic inputs to record the band I was in at the the time. Now I have to go scouring though the old farm house I grew up in to find it.

    Very nice deck. Luck was with you. Looks vintage, and the vast majority of these older cassette decks need new belts. The belts are very thin and did not age well. I have two cassette decks that both need work, but will get them up and running and cleaned. Still have tons of cassettes that I recorded. Nice videos. Thanks.

    That's a great find. I've been enjoying my old cassettes again the last couple of years, and wondering why I had them packed away in the closet for so long. You've got a nice setup there in the garage for jamming with friends. The beer frig is a nice touch, and for as much as I hate regular Bud light I have to say that Bud light orange is fantastic. I've been buying that lately, and really enjoying it.

    Now all you need is a tape head cleaner, a wand demagnatizer, take the door off in play mode & adjust the azimuth with a screwdriver and your good to go. 🙂👍

    The finest Hi-Fi score I found at a thrift store was a Philips CD-80. I paid 10 bucks for it. Yes, I'm serious. It's the reason why I can't stop buying CDs now. Ha ha.

    Used to play my modest collection of New Wave cassettes on a Technics double deck with automatic reverse function but I just never liked the sound. That got ditched. 20+ years later, I use a SONY CFD-S33 boom box that I picked up at a thrift for $8. It was filthy but I tested it out in the shop with available CDs/cassettes and brought it home. Gave it a thorough scrub-a-dub, and it looks and plays brand new now. Although I had a lot of cassette tapes from the 80s, I didn't hold onto them and sold most of them on discogs. Maybe I shouldn't have. Wahh.

    If it's a rubber band drive, you may want to change the rubber bands/timing belts before they melt and mess up your mechanics, lucky it still works. If it's a direct drive, it's an even more valuable find. Then there's very little servicing to be done except change the obvious power / audio caps + a little grease to the mechanism.

    Just recently getting back into cassettes. Weird. I haven't touched my Yamaha KX-330 in about 20+ years. My music listening habits have become so impersonal in recent years with everything streaming online or asking Alexa to play a song. Back in the day, picking up a cassette, or record and playing it, reading the liner notes...it was tangible and there was a connection. Anyways, thanks for posting! Liked and subscribed!

  • @tsonaqua

    I HATE that downtown Goodwill. They take all the decent vintage equipment from the other Goodwills in Winnipeg, leaving only the Yorx/Candle type garbage, then over price it 250%. By the time it comes down to a price its even worth considering its had the crap beat out of it, full of scratches, missing knobs. When I go there its sad. You see a nice piece and they price it at what a pristine, tested, and guaranteed version would go for on eBay. With Goodwill you never know what you'll get. It could be a DOA, so its sad when you see a nice piece cause you know you'll come back two weeks later, it'll still be there only it will have been brutalized.
    Question about your Bluetooth units knowing you have two of them, are you able to label them to differentiate between them? You know with Chromecasts you can change there names to 'Livingroom' and 'Garage'. aptX?

    • @Channel33RPM
      @Channel33RPM  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gordon. Unfortunately, I am not able to identify the individual units. So far, it's been ok, because the Bluetooth seems to automatically pick up the closest unit, but I can see how this could cause issues.
      All the best
      Frank

    The deck is really gorgeous. You're lucky to find such a cool deck in a Goodwill store. The sendust head means that this deck will serve well for another 30-40 years, before the head wears out. Sendust heads are really notorious for their durability. Few months ago I found a Sharp GF-575 boombox in the dumster near my dormitory. I'll clean it up, do some little repairs on it and put a new aerial on because the old one is broken off. Apart from the missing aerial and the LED VU meter not working, the boombox is in really good condition.

    I love Akai cassette decks (and some of the classic Pioneer cassette decks too). They were so beautifully designed back in the day with their silver faces and luminous blue VU meters.
    I have several Akai decks because I loved their cool industrial design (as well as their glass xtal ferrite heads that are supposed to last forever) and of course, for their ability to play cassettes. It's great to see you found one for a decent price and still in fantastic condition. :)

    Nice one Frank. I've had some hits and misses with thrift cassettes - not as good as your haul.
    I got Queen - Greatest Hits ... But it's very muffled - any clues anyone?
    Some recent wins with:
    Queen - II
    Foreigner - Records
    Thompson Twins - Greatest Hits
    ... and not something I'd usually get suprisingly OK/different with ...
    Marc Almond - Enchanted

    • @ShellstaTube
      @ShellstaTube 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS - I just Googled 'muffled cassette' and there'ss plenty of info out there.
      My deck works OK for most - so I'll take a closer look at the tape.

    • @ShellstaTube
      @ShellstaTube 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      FWIW ... I managed to fix the 'muffled' cassette. The pad on the thin metal strip suspended behind the tape, where the head makes contact when playing, was pressed in ... So it wouldn't have been making a firm contact with the head. I managed to pull it up to the level of the tape with a small pair of needle-nose pliers.

    I must say, I use another fluoroscan vintage cassette deck, a Pioneer CTF600, and while it is a restored deck that costed me about 120 euros (and brand new must had cost as much as a scooter or something like that), I get the impression your Akai is build and finished to even a higher standard. So yeah, great score!

    pretty sure that's the model I had when I lived in Scotland back in 1983, it made great recordings, I had an Akai tuner\amp that matched it, remember recording a BBC session , of the band "Brand X", with Phil Collins on drums, onto a BASF chrome tape, excellent sound quality, it was released many years later on a CD, called "Missing period" one of the jems in my collection, I doubt that will ever be available on vinyl. I immigrated with about 100 cassettes, left my albums behind, ....sad thought

    Reminds me of a sweet vintage Marantz tape deck I picked up at thrift a few years ago. Took it home all excited. In the garage I put it on top of a cardboard box that my daughters Step2 Playhouse came in. Turned to get something else from the car and the top of the box fell in and the Marantz took a four foot drop to the bottom of the box, pretty much destroying it. *sad face* Don't think I even bothered to plug it in after that.

    That Poison cover for Open Up was actually banned and Enigma Records was forced to release an edited version of the cover.

      My sister worked for Enigma back in the day and she might still have a vinyl copy of this album. I will ask.

    Nice score Frank! I was shopping at the thrifts for a tape deck and cd deck this weekend. Found a Kenwood DP-57. For 6 bucks, however I don’t know 100% if the CD player is scratching the cd’s. Have you ran into this problem?

    • @Channel33RPM

      I have. 0sometimes the drawer doesn't drop or the mechanism that spins the disc doesn't lift it enough. It's usually pretty obvious when it's happening because you can hear the disc scrape.

    Timer start is used to enable recording or playback whenever the next time the deck is powered on. So if there was something you wanted to record at a later time, you would turn the timer switch on, and when the deck is powered up again, it would start recording or playing automatically without having to press Play manually.

      Nice set up Joe! That Boogie is a Subway Rocket... little 20 watter from the 90s. It was having issues with overheating, which I did not want to deal with. I sold it over the weekend (with full disclosure to the buyer).

    Dear Frank: I threw my cassette deck out over a yr ago, now I find myself regretting it. Back in the day I used a make compilation tapes from my LPs, to play in my car, and elsewhere. I even made them from CDs. But then I got a CDs recorder, and the deck just sat there for yrs. But for some reason I began to get nostalgic for the fun and challenge of making cassettes. But why, I have a CDR? Glad I don't feel the same way about LPs. Nostalgia is a funny thing. I started out doing it to "preserve" my LPs, and now I've come full circle. I may pick up a cassette deck from a thrift shop one day and start up again, but dont expect me to get a turntable, that's over and done with.

    • @larrymagee8758
      @larrymagee8758 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And as it recall you could get C110 and C120 tapes. JESUS CHRIST, you could get a whole Mahler Symphony on there, and with auto-reverse you could play the whole thing and never have to flip a tape. COOL!

    • @Channel33RPM
      @Channel33RPM  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember buying a couple of longer-playing cassettes back in the day, but I seem to recall they were more prone to being "eaten" by the deck. I'm not sure why this was, or if it was only my experience. I used to love 90 min tapes... You could record an entire record on each side.
      Cheers
      Frank

    Flashback to finding a Yamaha K-960 at a church basement sale:
    Nice silver face, nice low price... but the belt slipped, and it took time to find a replacement. Not to mention finding need to do the SAME with the idler tire for the take-up drive. Adjusted the pitch as-best-as-possible by ear, but still took it to a local repair shop to get everything right. Meanwhile, I got another via eBay with the black fascia, and attempted the same DIY with it.
    Results: One that works, one that "works"... but the desire to have both work is there, along with one to swap the buttons & knobs between the two. Silver controls on black may look cheesy... but black on silver look excellent!😘😎😁
