This is Dutilleux's "breakout" piece, coming after the 2nd Symphony (itself a masterpiece but in a relatively more conventional way). "Metaboles" is astonishingly imaginative and ravishing.
Music of a higher realm.

Henri was a master of fascinating music that is completely forgettable. This is an incredibly inventive score with no song for you to hum on the way home after the concert.

You don't need to remember a melody to remember the piece. Like how you don't need to remember funny quotes or quips to know if you like a person.
