    It is hard luck of Indian railway that three steam engines Sultan,Shahib and Sindh which had hauled the first rail on 16/4/1853 could not be saved and sold in scrap. These historic steam engines must be preserved for new generation. So sad.

      Totally agree with you, our IR has no mentality to preserve its heritage.
      This video is a small step of preserving some steam action from my side.
      Thanks a ton !

    As a kid I was lucky enough to see these steam engines in action, so many times!
    Believe me, there's just nothing that can replace their sound and presence!!
    Especially in the early morning or twilight time, at the starting hours of the dawn, when the sky just begins to light up, and you see a steam engine coming your way from a distance, heavy white smoke just everywhere, plus the classic sound of a steam engine which can be heard even from 1 kilometre away, trust me, there's no other sight and feeling as this!
    Just nothing on earth can replace this experience, at least for me!
    I have always been fascinated by these engines, and when I saw this video, it instantly took me back to my lovely childhood!
    I also like diesel engines too much, but steam engines are really something else!!

      Glad to hear that.
      I regret that from last year the regular steam train between Delhi and Rewari / Alwar has been cancelled.

      Not to forget their eerie whistles at night and the feeling you got when your train passed a stationary steamer at night on some station with white fumes all around it ..as kids we used to fight for a window seat and used to have our faces glued against the windows to get a glimpse of the steam engine on a curve , smoking away to glory with its connecting rods moving back and forth. I have actually seen the WPs exceed 100 km/hr when hauling mail/express trains ..

      Just to share my view. Having born and grown up close bye to a Steam Loco Shed in Secunderabad, It was my natural inclination to see and aver every steam engine chug pass me. awds, cwds, xbs, xds, WGs, WPs on the broad guage sections and on the meter (narrow) gauge section YGs, YPs etc. The Canadian WP designed by Baldwin in the 50s even today is considered to be the best ever designed locomotive ( Not classified). In comparison to size and enormity WP is far muscular and sturdier than the Flying Scotsman in the UK which was built by Sir Nigel in 1942. But in speed the Flying Scottsman would clock 160 kmph, while a more modern and a sturdier WP ending up at 110 kmph? Perhaps the information is about the WP doing 110 kmph is wrong or the railways may have not tried upping the speed. As luck would had it, this July, I took a ride from Fort William to Mallaig in Scotland in the Jacobite Train (Flying Scotsman) an was thrilled to see it swisshing over 120 kmph even at this age.

  • @CyrusInIndia

    steam locos are alive and kicking in the USA and UK. In India they were all prematurely retired and good working steam locos were broken down for scrap.
    Infact UK built a brand new latest steam loco and she was put in service in Jan 2009
    now only these heritage runs for the rich, not many can afford

      once in my lifetime i would so love to sit in a broad gauge steam loco train. sat in a meter gauge once from Ahmadabad to Abu road in rajasthan in 1990 when i was 12 years and then once on the narrow gauge Darjeeling hill railway in 1992. Am a typical Bombay guy so steam stopped around early 60's - 70's itself in Bombay so my dad says but as i read about railways i came to know that sporadic steam services were running in India and regular services not the heritage or vintage right till 1995 and last one meter gauge in Gujarat till the year 2000 but i never got to witness all of these as was based in Bombay. Even railways to Goa were steam till mid 1985 post which diesel took over. In a way i missed the proper-proper steam generation by not much maybe by 10-15 years or so.
      I also read that the railway minister post 1990
      took a hateful decision to scrap all the steam locos and scrap-metal is a very big business in India. the scrap dealer sharks are only interested in the metal... Hundreds of very good steam locos in perfect working condition were broken down mercilessly for their metal.....its such a sad story. it brings tears to my eyes when i watched the national geographic video "last days of steam"
      the national railway museum in Delhi is a shame - locos are rusting and in a a pathetic condition. they will collapse someday. their wheels are sunk in the sand, etc
      compare that to a museum abroad and there will be no comparison. Clearly India does not care for its heritage
      this Akbar loco and few others which are remaining should be taken care of like gold.

    • @amitavabiswas362
      @amitavabiswas362 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      But to the best of my knowledge, in the US, the steam locos are not 'she' but 'he'. As they often call them Union Pacific Big Boy. Boy = he.

    • @CyrusInIndia
      @CyrusInIndia 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      amitava biswas
      hmm but i was still referring to the UK steam loco. I just come back after a month in UK and believe me they have hundreds of working steam locos on their heritage lines and even on the main lines. They even officially have what's called as miniature railways as well which are run by small diesel and steam locos. their museums are filled with preserved locos in such pristine condition that some of them look new even though they are like 65 years + and the manager told me that almost all preserved locos because of how well they have been kept can be made operational with them being serviced.
      compare with our rail museum in Delhi where the locos are out in the open in the sun and rain all rusting and turning to dust in pitiable condition......
      also i fulfilled my wish of sitting in a proper steam loco train there in the uk not once but twice....i was so happy. they have the standard gauge rail tracks.
