Community is the by product. That’s one thing I’ve always tried to avoid saying when someone asks what sets the box I’m at apart from any other. Easy and go to answer for most is community, but we all have that so what else?
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned your goal is to give them the tools they need. Even prior to CrossFit, my goal as a trainer was to teach and develop someone enough that they don’t need me anymore. Of course I still want to coach and love that some members are with us for years and years. However, community isn’t something that is immediately there, but you know what is? An enthusiastic owner, a coach that wants to continue to get better, a team that does its best to educate and teach proper mechanics and nutrition. Those are the things that build “community” and instead of selling that, maybe a better word or phrase should be “continuing fitness education” or idk something like that.
Community is what makes your, sevans, CPW, gwtp, channel strong, but we don’t see yall yelling “watch my videos cause we have a strong community”
    It’s like stating the obvious.
    Alright rant over 😅

Community was the selling point for me when I first joined almost 7 years ago. I had no idea about the methodology or the backstory to what set CrossFit a part from all the other fitness programs. I saw on social media a group of people coming together for fitness and doing really cool things outside the box that helped the community. Since joining i've grown so much that I got my L1 this year so I can pass Greg's methodology and what CrossFit has done for me.

I started my adult life in advertising, and then became a pastor in the Lutheran Church. In both instances, one of the biggest faults of advertisers and evangelizers was that they spoke to themselves. They claimed that their target was people outside the company/church but everything they did and said was speaking to existing customers and members. It was like they were so inbred that they could not relate to those outside of their community. Fought many battles in both settings trying to get beyond the incestuous thinking of the company. We are not advertising to existing customers/members but trying to reach people outside of the bubble. CrossFit is about unique path of FITNESS this should be first and foremost. People that I know in CrossFit are their because they are interested in and desiring a fitness lifestyle and improved health. If finding a community was their priority they might join a church or social group. CrossFit community is important to fitness lifestyle but it is a bi-product of the CrossFit lifestyle.

The community is the greatest asset of CrossFit. F45, Orange Theory, and others are right to market community first, but luckily for us, we all know they wish they were CrossFit because it’s ultimately our methodology that sets us apart.
CrossFit presents a multifaceted value to people, and I’ve showed that 3:00 video to three people and all three of them have some CrossFit since.
That shit is 🔥, it’s what people want to see, and CrossFit knows it because CrossFit knows that everyone knows exercise and nutrition is important.
The hook is the community, and then you start sprinkling in how the methodology sets us apart. That’s the recipe for success

As an L3 and Affiliate owner, I could not agree more. I thought that video and the accompanying article was one of the best pieces of media CF has put out this past year. I don’t understand the hate. We can market community AND still be focused on increasing work capacity across broad time and modal domains.

Going to a CrossFit gym was the most socially isolating experience I have dealt with because you expect it not to be - I’m hoping it’s different in the states with a larger population.
However, I train CrossFit solo in my garage now and it compliments my parenting style nicely. I’d like to give back to CrossFit for it but I won’t join an affiliate again when my daughter can watch me train at home and I start dinner between intervals.

@@hillerfit i started at the first affiliate with the capability of strict muscle ups but had never done crossfit before… some/many didn’t like that - plus I was lean because I’ve always run and lifted weights and watched my food intake. Second affiliate, I was just older than most of the crowd who were single and childless (more partying). I can get a lot more done in 1.5 hours in my garage than 2 hours of commuting and class - I do wish that was not so, because I like being pushed, but I don’t see a plausible path forward without seriously impacting my family life. I do use a trainer who was once a regional athlete and knows his stuff. I would love a training buddy from time to time! People are not always friendly to new comers. I was 37 and some 20 year old girl elbowed me hard in the side while I walked through the changing area… typical behavior.

    • @veronicazimmerman3294
      @veronicazimmerman3294 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@hillerfit my apt response was not accepted by TH-cam. Trying again…
First affiliate: started with capability of strict muscle ups and being rather lean for a woman, simply because I ran, weight trained and ate to my necessary amount. Many (girls) were not very friendly. I was 38 and to give an example, I walked through the change area and was purposefully elbowed hard in stomach and given a snarky look. A few nasty comments from the oly coach and a constant shoulder injury, and remarks about my body and zero friendliness or support, I decided my money could go elsewhere.
Second affiliate: I was simply older than the crowd and the crowd drank a lot. Just socially isolated though the husband wife who ran it were lovely and very good programmers. I got very strong … but it was a struggle to bring daughter along when essentially I could do it in my garage.
I do agree, it helps to have a fitness buddy but an affiliate is no guarantee of that. I’d like to support CrossFit but affiliate dues and travel back and forth just isn’t worth it - I can do a lot more in 1.5 hrs at home than 2 hours including commute time to the affiliate. If I lived across the street, maybe I’d suck it up. But you don’t automatically have a good social experience, or even a kind one, at the affiliates.

Years ago it was a joke that CrossFitters are just nerds that have to spend a ridiculous monthly fee to buy a friend group. Now HQ is like "yeah, lets run with that".
I definitely made some good friends from the time I was going to an affiliate. But that wasn't the selling point. The Community is great, the Community is also cliquey. It's not all upside. The methodology is what needs to be talked about first. The accountability that comes with the Community is icing on the cake. The gym drama that also comes with the Community is the pickles on the cake.
HQ... just stick to selling on the methodology.

I needed to start CF so that I would move my fat arse and start to save my own life, not so that I could gain a new friend group. But that's just me 🤷🏼‍♀️ I know others like to have part of their identity as being part of the community.
