Im so glad we live in an era, where we have SOO MANY GOOD OPTIONS (Sony, Canon, Blackmagic etc) but be loyal to a brand that matches our own technical AND emotional preferences. I am Canon all day everyday, but my BEST FRIENDS, who are so talented as well, are Sony. Much love, and much peace to all us creators. We make the world better.

The C70 is truly a GOAT camera. It is my very first canon camera too and didn’t really like canon beforehand. The C70 changed my mind for sure!!!! I’m glad it’s working for your workflow and the direction your career is going bro!!!

@MEDiAgamer agree 💯 we use them in our collective. They have several issues we are addressing as we do more corporate and higher end videos. So far sony has been the best overall and blackmagic 4k for our livestreaming. There is always a "I'll excuse because of price i paid to get _____" once you start seeing $$,$$$ day rate for 3 to 4 person teams. Then it all changes because budget goes out the door 🚪

Starting in media as a photographer that shoot 💯 RAW, canon had my full and undivided attention out the gate. The things I can do to the dynamic range of a raw photo is insane. As becoming a filmmaker, my 8bit canon bodies held me down (took care of me very well) for years. But as I perfected my craft, it was like shooting with jpgs. Then came black magic 6k. Once I got my hands on it as a gift, coupled with DaVinci Resolve… it totally hit different. First time in my professional history that I was able to walk away from canon bodies. Had I received a C70 or something cinema from canon that produce raw, I would’ve stayed in the eco system. But now I solely lean on my canon glass collection. I lost my auto focus but LiDAR tech has fixed that for me. Even having gyro stabilization now is making it harder for me to look back at canon bodies. Rigging the 6k is much more of a hassle honestly, but I love playing with these toys so I practice hard on speed building and versatility so when a situation arise, I can quickly adapt. I still would try a c70 though.

I love this review for many reasons.
1- It shows a busy filmmaker creating lots of great pieces and talking out of the vast experience with the camera.
2- You owned your opinion and show maturity by saying that this camera is giving you what you need in this season of your career.
3- Thanks for not complaining about all the things that the camera doesn’t so for you. I am am tired of mediocre TH-camrs complaining because the camera doesn’t fix their lack of knowledge or bad filmmaking.
This is a great camera, I own and Arri Alexa mini and a two canon C70s. They shoot perfect B cams for my Arri and to be perfectly honest I find myself traveling with this camera really often while living my mini behind.
    Great work man!

I chose the Komodo over the c70 in 2021 due to it not having raw. Realized recently that I shoot more things on my own and purchased a canon c70 now that raw is an option. I love it. Don't get me wrong I love my Komodo too but my work horse is the canon C70.

  • @JaimeAndresMedia
    @JaimeAndresMedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree with most of what you said here, I also have the C70 since it came out last year and it's an incredible camera. The one point I would counter is that, the low light on this camera is much better than most other Canon cameras, even full frame!! Yes, it true that Sony cameras are much better in low light situations, with less noise due to the technology on their sensors, however, the noise from low-light image from the C70 is actually very pleasing, it's hard to explain, you have to see it to understand what I mean. It looks more like film noise than digital noise, and it can easily be cleaned up with noise reduction in post, which would make it rival the Sony's (as long as you have a powerful computer to process it). But yes, the low light on this camera is actually very nice and depending on the style you're going after, I'd say it actually gives night-time clips a characteristic that no other camera can reproduce. I'm not saying this because I have it, although it is my favorite camera for video, but for people to see it and know that this is actually a contender to the FX6 and FX3 in low light. To illustrate, take a look at a short film I did last year, with only ambient light at night.... th-cam.com/video/hgQ0x2HJNkM/w-d-xo.html

I am a Sony user and always liked the C200 (that was the monster kit that everybody wanted) and I know the C70 is now a great tool for all kind of jobs. Good that you are happy with Canon, in the end the results and the workflow is what counts. Keep 'em coming man, congrats.

I need a good hybrid now and already own the C70. I was actually considering selling it and switching to the Sony ecosystem but I just cannot get over how good the roll off is on the C70 and I still think Canon's color science is superior. The Alexa LUT works so good on RAW or CLOG 2 as well, now that the C70 shoots RAW ST and LT.
I used the Sony and I must admit, it's amazing how they pull no punches unliked Canon, but I can't help but feel like there is a more "cinematic" look with Canon. Someone change my mind considering I am infuriated at how much Canon holds back with their hybrids unlike Sony.

I actually just picked up a C70. And you were a big reason I did! And honestly, as soon as I picked it up and turned it on, I can't explain it, but it just "felt right". I used to always think about cameras, but now I just think about shooting, which is nice. That said, in regard to future content suggestions, I'm super curious about anamorphic options on the C70, like the Vazen (RF Version), the Great Joy, Sirui, Laowa Nanomorph, etc. Would love to see what any of those options would look like in your style.

I've been rocking the C70 for about a year as well. Love it. I agree with every single one of your takeaways. Honestly, I have used the RAW feature exactly ZERO times since the update. And the R5C is crazy in low light when set to native iso 3200.. amazing.
Both have timecode for my tentacle syncs together with the tentacle track E.. ultimate setup, really. (for longer shoots you would need a V-mound and a usb camble for the R5C though, it is power hungry.

This review was right on time. While I absolutely love my C70, I’ve been wondering lately whether I made a mistake in getting it. But you pretty much named all the same things I love about the camera (especially the softness of the images and the built-in NDs) and it made me realize that copping this was the right move. I still need to get something like the R5C because I need an even smaller footprint in some situations but the C70 is perfect. Like another commenter said, this joint is the GOAT camera!

Yeah the C70 is like the perfect middle ground with a lot to offer. Just recently got my hands on a C200 as I got a good deal and it was in my budget. I love the RAW and I don’t think the files are huge compared to the R5 and it edits/plays back really well. Even the 8bit is really solid! That and my R5 will more than get me through for now. Canon for life 🤞🏽😂

Good observations - I've been a Canon shooter a long time but honestly my loyalty has been stretched thin at some times. That said I've always liked the color science and "look" of the Canon and I find the files really painless to grade. I just upgraded to a C70 after shooting a C100 M2 for years so I'm used to the super 35 format. I agree-once you have a cine camera with NDs and built in audio you can't go back. Very manageable file size and excellent battery life. I got this camera with full knowledge of it's strength and weaknesses and so far no regrets. I knew the low light wouldn't be that great and the autofocus was really improved with the firmware update, but again I knew it's limitations and my expectations were not excessive. Still a lot to like about this reliable workhorse. I miss the EVF and I'm working on a DIY solution -

Hey man... I really hope you see this
Got a question a lil unrelated: I'm about to buy my first camera... I'm a hybrid shooter and I'd decided to go in for the R6. But with the news of Canon banning the production of 3rd party lenses, I'm beginning to tilt towards the A7IV as it has much cheaper and broader lens options. You think that's the right move?

I’ve put the c70 in some great low light situations and found the footage extremely usable. I’ve shot on the FX6 an FX3 and they don’t compare to the C70. Internal ND is amazing and with the Viltrox Speedbooster it’s equivalent to full frame. I primarily use the 24-105mkii and Canon 50mm 1.2 for all my run and gun!

    Really enjoyed your video, Chris.
The C70 seems to have a lot going for it. I like that you covered pros and cons. Everything has its downsides.
    Exposure:
I'm currently sporting the C200. Typically shoot in a studio setting. However, I recently took it on the road, to a trade show...shot some interviews, etc.
I had some difficulty setting proper exposure, using the WFM (Waveform Monitor). The trade show was well-lit, which was great. But, some of the talking head footage had ceiling/wall lights in the background, which showed up on the WFM. In these instances, the WFM was very busy (subject's exposure vs background exposure, etc). At times, it was hard to make sense of. And of course, I accidentally left my gray card back in the hotel room.
Guess, what I'm trying to say is, I love the C200, but I wish the C200 had built-in False Color. Not sure if the C70 is equipped with it.
    A Better Viewing Experience:
I would love to have a camera that has False Color, and a way overlay LUTs on the monitor. To be able to see what the final image will look like, while filming, would be an awesome upgrade.
    As always, great video.

Your work is impressive, quick question, do you like using the camera on a gimbal? I have a similar issue with the shape of the camera,, I wish it had the rotating handle like my other cinema cameras

I'm thinking of making a huge jump from my Lumix GH6 to C70. Never used Cannon before. Is it necessary to pop a Cine lens on the C70 or can I get away with an f-stop lens and have decent cinematic quality?

I love my c70, but if they launch a new version of it with improved autofocus capabilities, I’d trade up in a second! It can be painfully obvious how outdated the autofocus capabilities are when you work with a lot of Sony shooters… And do a lot of gimbal work. That said, I like the 70’s image more and don’t see myself going back to Sony anytime soon. I also primarily shoot EF glass on mine, but I’m keeping an eye on the crop sensor RF lenses coming out at some point - maybe that’ll convince me start using RF glass.
Quick note on the autofocus issues - when paired with the LiDAR RS from DJI with some appropriate cine glass, the c70 becomes a beast :)
