    Why don't they take the Titanic out of the sea?
    The ocean liner Titanic was the largest ship of its time, but it had a very short life. The first and last voyage of this ship started on April 10, 1912 and ended four days later. This tragedy happened on the night of April 14th to the 15th day of 1912. When the Titanic crashed, at least 1,496 people died, making it one of the biggest maritime disasters in history.

      If you mean raising the Titanic, that would be impossible. For one thing, the hull broke in half (I think the aft portion of the hull is resting upside down). Second, the hull has deteriorated so much in the 100+ years on the sea bed that attempting to resurface it would lead it to break up even more.

      @@Hollywoodeatsordrinksit I think all the dead have been dissolved by now. I just checked though and they said the guys in the engine(?) room were shut in the watertight compartments and the skeletons at least may be in tact. They're under the ship itself, of course, so I wonder if anyone will ever reach that area.

    • @MmntechCa
      @MmntechCa ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IIRC, Thomas Andrews did make a passing remark about it being practically unsinkable. But what people forget is that they had no reason to think otherwise. The Olympic Class had all the latest safety features: wireless radio, double bottom hull, automatic watertight doors. These were massive improvements from older ships. The Olympic, Titanic's sister ship, had also survived a nasty collision with a warship, that left a big gaping hole in her. While Titanic didn't have enough lifeboats, the going assumption at the time was that because the Atlantic shipping routes were so busy, there'd be ships close enough to come to the rescue. Most accidents also tended to happen relatively close to shore. So the boats were only meant to ferry people, rather than for longer term survival. Titanic also had more than legally required. And when she did hit the berg, the safety features worked exactly as intended. She took a very long time to sink, and did so on an even keel, despite multiple breeches below the waterline. It was just bad luck it happened in open ocean with no other ships close enough. Even hitting the berg, there were ice warnings, but due to weather conditions, it still would have been impossible to see until you were right on top of it.
      Like all accidents even today, it acted as a valuable learning opportunity. Upgrades were made to future ships. Britannic, the third Olympic class ship that was still under construction, had her double hull and watertight compartments raised, and was to be given with an absurd amount of lifeboats, including modern motorized ones. Olympic was refitted with similar upgrades. When Britannic struck a sea mine in 1916, casualties were relatively light. Most of those were due to a couple boats getting sucked into the props. The captain was trying to beach her, so the engines were still running. Olympic also intentionally ramming a German U-Boat, with little more than a bent prow to show for it. I believe she's the only ocean liner to ever score a confirmed kill.
      Also, yes, there's a big difference between ocean liners and cruise ships. It's like saying a Subaru WRX is a minivan, because they're both four wheeled road vehicles with hatched backs. Liners are designed to get from A to B as fast as possible. While some liners were used as cruise ships early on, they weren't really ideal for the task. They're inefficient at slower speeds. Cruise ships have flat bottom and a shallower draft (distance between the water line and bottom of the hull), so they can operate close to land and in shallower ports. Liners have a V-bottom and deep draft, to cut through the water like a knife.

    It wasn't advertised as unsinkable. It was an ocean liner, not a "cruise liner". And the death toll wasn't high because there weren't enough lifeboats, the lifeboats it did have weren't properly loaded because of the rich assholes inside them. More passengers were killed when the Eastland capsized in the Chicago River as a result of too much top weight from added lifeboats. In fact, the titanic is a rare exception in ship sinkings at sea because it sank slowly over the span of hours while most ships at sea take well under 30 minutes to sink, many sink so fast that there isn't even time to properly notify everyone, and most sink at a tilt that renders half of the lifeboats useless anyway.

    The thing about the life boats is they actually had more than was legally required of them.
    They were required to have 16 life boats and had 20- enough to save almost 1200 people. Despite that even under perfect circumstances 1,046 would have died no matter what but incompetence added another 468 people to that death toll

    I always thought the old ocean liners had lots more class than the cruise liners of today - even the oversized monsters that remind me of floating wedding cakes. Plus I don't like the modern styles of entertainment. A ballroom with potted ferns in the corners, women in ball gowns and men in white ties and tailcoats, and an orchestra playing old tunes is more to my liking than a disco with strobing lights and ear-splitting music.
    But would I like to travel on Titanic II? Not if it was made in China.

    We almost had 3 Titanics, but they all failed in their own special ways.
    I'm not saying the Titanic is or was ever a cursed ship, leave that for superstitious sailors to worry about, what I am saying is, it takes a special kind of smart to try rebuilding a long dead ship because movie really good, I will be king of world now.... Is a stupid reason.
    Someone needs to see it to the end, this time, so that they to can be world king.

    I've been there! I was on the SS Poseidon when it capsized. When I was 17 my parents kicked me out so I slept under a bridge that night. Next day I won a Poseidon ticket at a good hand of Solitaire. Hung out with a girl. We were both on a deck chair "in flagrante delicto" when that damned wave hit us. I took up position on that deck chair when in the water. She held on but there was only room for one of us. She insisted I let her on and I said, "I don't know you!" Then she called me an "unimaginable bastard". Then she said I was "stupid stupid", and I said, "if I'm so stupid why am I on the deck chair and you in the water". Then she mumbled something about "trusting". I tell ya, listening to her whine and moan all night, you have no idea the hell I went through. Fortunately we both were rescued and we got married the next day. We're celebrating our 50th! 😊🥂
