- An Aboriginal choir hailing from Cairns, Queensland, Australia, Spinifex Gum performed this gorgeous rendition of "Make It Rain", sung partly in the traditional Aboriginal Yindjibarndi language.
The voices of Marliya from Gondwana Choirs - young Indigenous women singing in English and Yindjibarndi - come together with The Cat Empire’s Felix Riebl and special guests Emma Donovan, Peter Garrett and Briggs for a powerful collaboration of voice, sound, movement and change, in musical snapshots of life in the Pilbara, north Western Australia.
Commissioned to write a song cycle for the choir, Felix Riebl spent several years visiting the Pilbara to build relationships and gather stories. He and co-creator Ollie McGill went on to write the album Spinifex Gum about the region’s local tales and characters, true stories of racism and injustice, and the legacies of colonisation with music production that’s staunchly modern, built from found sound samples of the Pilbara - rustling leaves, bouncing basketballs and chugging trains.

Tom Waits has been my favourite artist for as long as I’ve known about him, to find his channel has posted this and as a woman whose grandfather is a Gamilaraay man, this is beyond words. You’ve made one of my favourite songs by him even more powerful, you’ve brought me to tears. Thankyou for such an amazing performance and an even more amazing take on the meaning. I hope not just our people but the people of the world take haste in healing our country, our earth and learning to heal each other.

Only in a Tom Waits song do you hear knives sharpening and trains passing as part of the percussion.

It's insanely rare to be able to take a song from a unique voice, and then make a version that stands against it favourably.
It's entirely another thing to create an genuine separate living entity, and that's how I view this.
The beauty of art is that during the moment of performance we're able to see deeply into the heart of another, and as a viewer, connect it with what we are deep inside.
What's most compelling with Tom Waits as a singer is that he's never pretending, and that's why I think this cover works so well - it's inarguably from the heart from every artist involved.
As Emma eloquently states before the song, the meaning that's brought to the performance differs; but, it still taps into a profoundly universal human wellspring.
From a past visitor to Australia who deeply misses its land and its people, I think you've admirably represented the essence of the songs that still echo up from the bones of the country, in a modern voice.
Covering Tom Waits is probaly one of the hardest things to do but this version is just out of this world!

It's rare that cover versions do justice to Tom Waits' music, but this one absolutely smashes it. Manages to honour the original composition, but also does something unique, transformative and personal. Haunting stuff.

Wow! Tom Waits has to be one of the hardest artists to cover, since his songs are so soulful and unique that most covers just come across as cheap (see The Eagles version of Ol' 55). This was incredible, truly incredible. I've never even heard of this group before, but consider me a new fan! What a powerful voice and such perfect instrumentalization and vocal backing.

I don't know that I've ever heard a Waits cover that is equal to the original. This one might even be greater than the original. At the very least it is equal while taking the song into a new direction while still being true to Waits. Brilliant. Simply Brilliant!
