- Ice Fishing Muskrat Lake in Ontario - Cobden Ice Fishing Derby 2025
Welcome back! In this most recent episode of The Average Joes, Brendan, Lyle, Leanne, and some friends headed out to Cobden Ontario, to Muskrat Lake, to take part in the 15th Annual Cobden Civitan Club Ice Fishing Derby. The temperatures were bone chilling, with a -30C wind chill. But the group hunkered down in deep water with the hopes of tying into a lake trout or pike big enough to get them in the top 3 of the leader board for either species. After a few hours of grinding to get a bite, the Joes managed to get a couple fish topside, with the second pike getting caught in the FINAL HOUR of derby time. This fish was a beauty, and was big enough to take in to the weigh in station to try to achieve a win. Make sure to watch the full adventure of the day and pick up some pointers for next years derby on how and where to fish on the lake.

Congratulations!! I was wondering the laws on dead frozen smelts. I’m in zone 15 aswell and can’t find any regulations on them There amazing for lakers.
Hey man, thank you! This is from the Ontario website… “Dead rainbow smelt may be used as bait in Ontario except in Fisheries Management Zones 2, 4, 5 and 6, excluding Lake Nipigon and its tributaries, Nipigon River, Jessie lake, Lake Helen, and Polly Lake (see Fishing), where it is illegal to use them or possess them as bait.”
They do work great for lakers and pike!
