In this most recent adventure, Brendan took on a 48 hour SURVIVAL challenge. The Idea - To purchase $100 of camping, fishing, and survival gear from Dollarama, and head into the bush for 48 hours to survive with No Food and No Water. He has to catch the food he gets to eat. This included Brook Trout and CREEK CHUB!
Watch as Brendan buys his gear, makes a shelter, gathers water, and catches trout using a bushcraft rod and minimal gear. He didn't only survive, he thrived.

Good video made me subscribe can't wait for more
Thanks Matt! Appreciate the support man, there’s definitely lots more where this came from!
Hard to believe that tiny stream is so loaded with trout ! I really enjoyed the video.
If you put the time in they’re findable! And just fishing them slowly and simply works best
Was looking forward to watching this one. Didn't disappoint. Can't wait to try chub! 😂😂
Haha you’ve gotta give it a taste it’s pretty good! Thanks for watching guys, appreciate it 😄😄
Brendan loves chub I heard 😮
Liked and subscribed!
Thank you very much buddy! Appreciate the support and I hope you enjoy our future content!
Cool video!
I've eaten Creek chub as a kid before, but probably like 1/4lbers or so.
I remember the meat as white and flaky.
Not 100% sure I'd think the same anymore, but hey, when it's all you have...😂
The diy rod with the reel was reely neat. :)
Thanks man! It was fun to build it and make my ideas come to life!
New Subscriber here , your video just showed up on my recommended videos list and wasn't long before I hit the subscribe, then turned on notifications so I won't miss future videos. Will be checking your older videos in days to come as well. I drank a lot of tang as a kid lol. Great job on the fishing 🎣 pole , and 10 worms 🪱 under the first rock real bonus lol. Pretty good catch of trout there in that little stream, great video , hope you have an awesome week
Thanks so much bud! It was overall an awesome trip! Appreciate your support! 😊
Here from the trout fishing FB group. I wish I had a dollarama can’t believe a dollar store has fishing gear
I lucked out that this Dollarama had so much fishing gear! It was the first one I stopped at, but they can be hit and miss so I was lucky!
you could have sharpened the knife wit a river rock an sand, you did great job on the rod buddy. would have liked to see you use roots for cord instead of cable ties though, that would be cool.
I definitely couldn’t have made it anymore dull trying lol Thanks David!
Roots definitely would have worked. There are different things I’ll have to try in the future to make even more minimalist gear!
@@TheAverageJoesFishingShow somehow i think i could have dulled the knife more trying to sharpen it, lol, i have such a difficult time with the sharpening process no matter how many videos i watched, i know its easy to suggest things an doing them is another, i never did the root thing for cordage myself and i take way too much with me. i like your videos they inspire me ty/
That was fun!
Thanks Mike! Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautifully edited video! I’ve heard that creek chubs are the delicacy of the canadian bush :)
Thanks Noah, they were a delicious treat for me! I didn’t mind them at all lol
You made it look easy! $50 dollar limit next time. Like you said, you can really appreciate quality gear after using some cheap stuff.
Oh it definitely gives you an appreciation for nicer quality gear! I’m thinking of another challenge with cheaper items or less items for sure!
Well!!!! I'm lost for words. Might be a good learning experience for a younger lad, but I prefer Best Westerns and the keg!
Grampa Don 👏
Thanks Don! Wasn’t the most comfy of sleeps, but at least the fish were biting! I didn’t go hungry!
Guess you won't want to go out winter tenting with me lol.
LETS GOOO!!!! This vid is unreal buddy well done!!!
Thanks so much DJ!! Cheers buddy, hopefully some of your viewers find it! 😊
fished that area for decades, lot's of nice fish in the creeks around Algonquin and south of 17. You will find the bigger ones usually in the ponds. My brother and myself used to trek back to find beaver ponds knowing that's where we'll find the larger trout. The Chub's, never ate them, always used them for Pike bait. lol
I’ve gone to a few of those beaver ponds you’re likely mentioning. Got some a little bigger, but not many. Thanks for watching!
That was awesome!
Thanks so much! I appreciate the support and kind words 😊
Brendan you're doing better with that homemade rod than many guys do with a $100 rod from bass pro. Lots of good stuff from the dollar store. Hope they send you a gift card
Thanks so much Alex! I really appreciate that. It ended up not working too bad especially after a few hours honing it in. That would be cool if they did!
Good job bud! I bet those fish tasted extra good when it's all you've ate.
They were a 5 Star meal for sure!! Thanks for watching budd!
You should never use river rocks as a fire pit they get water stuck in them over the years and can explode when high heats hit it
I actually didn’t know that, but noted! Interesting and makes sense.
Discount products -> premium content. Now we’re talkin’!
Thanks buddy! Was pretty cool to do!
@@TheAverageJoesFishingShow I’m actually really impressed at what you pulled off, and especially with those chubs. They looked delicious all crisped up like that. Because they’re so plentiful I’ve been looking into potentially butterflying & skewering them then grilling them up unagi-style with that sweet japanese glaze just like bbq eel. Sushi rolls are actually a super easy camping meal believe it or not because most of the ingredients are dry and will last indefinitely in a barrel. If you know what you’re buying, asian grocery store survival can quickly turn to michelin star gourmet camping, especially when you throw angling into the mix.
You could have passed on the reel too......as a kid all I ever used was a stick with 6 to 8 ft of line....caught tons of trout.....
I figured since it was a fishing video there was a good reason to get it, but next time I could definitely do without the reel!
I really liked this video, thanks for posting. Top tier entertainment. Also a couple fishing ideas for next time. Maybe do bottle fishing? Or can fishing or some other hobo style fishing reel instead of a conventional reel? It’s harder to use and more rewarding. Jigs with grubs or live bait work well with that style, so do spoons. Inline spinners work well if you can get them moving fast enough. And I imagine trout magnets would be deadly. Those weren’t around when I was a kid bottle fishing in my local river though haha. And an idea for food would be fish soup? Indigenous people and early settlers where big on that as you keep more nutrients in the food. Just take the guts out of the fish and throw the rest in with some water, and maybe some seasoning? I think that would be a good idea as well.
Those are all some great ideas! I definitely could do another video with even more minimal gear! I was thinking something like 5 or 10 pieces of gear only and limiting myself even more to see what’s possible!
Awesome video! How do u deal with all the tics?
Not many ticks in our area still luckily. The deer flies were bad though that trip, they chewed me up pretty good both days
Cool idea
Thanks Dave!
Was this a recent trip? I’m heading to the park next weekend. Not sure how many Brook Trout there are mid summer.
This was 10 days ago. In lakes they will be deep, but if you’re fishing a natural trout area and you find any significant creeks coming in and out of the lake, they’re worth a try. It’s where the smaller fish hangout but fun to catch!
I ate creek chub when I was probably about 10 years old. Coincidentally, I was doing an overnight camping survival challenge with my father and younger brothers in our woods behind our house and the nearby trout stream (with native brookies and also stocked ones, and stocked brown and rainbow trout). None of us caught trout but ended up keeping creek chub to eat and maybe because we'd only had a couple granola bars as our emergency back-up food, the creek chub dinner was just fine. As I recall, we didnt have any Tang, but our water source for our home was a spring behind our house, and we made black (sweet) birch tea.
I'd have no problem eating creek chub from a clean trout stream, as they eat pretty much the same food as trout do.
Great story! I guess when in doubt creek chubs will do!
Make a overnight trip in a hanging platform, like a suspended pyramid, with an extension on it for rocks and dirt to have a fire suspended. Maybe over the water some how sonyou can fish and cook all from your platform
That sounds intense 😳 might be a future video idea!
Hey, love your channel guys ! I have been watching for some tips. I just got back from a three day trip. Canoe lake to burnt island to teepee. Only got small bass and small sort of a brown trout not a speck. It’s was raining on and off whole trip. I was thinking about Opeongo lake next time would you recommend? Thanks guys keep up the vids !
Those would have been Lake trout! The rain can sure put a damper on the enjoyment but at least you caught some! There’s some very good lakes surrounding Opeongo just a portage or two away!
Dangerous taking wet rocks from river for your fire pit.....they can easily explode.
I’ve just learned that during these comments. I had no idea, luckily they didn’t explode 🤯
Awesome trout fishing Joe ! Nice little creek great views , cool rod setup, Fresh air fresh fish couldn't be better :) I just caught on that should fill your pan ! Going to be an awesome meal, Check it out i do a little fishing too :))
Thanks Griff! I appreciate the view and comment buddy. That spot is a favourite of mine for Brookies.
The rod build worked out as planned! Wish I didn’t bring the super glue though, it was a waste of $4 😂
I’ll check out your channel! Thanks for tagging along!
@@TheAverageJoesFishingShow You really get out & enjoy mother nature, you just have to be able to think outside the box a little like you do :)) Some can some can't !
The survival fishing is great and the rod was epic but honestly I don't understand the appeal of buying all that cheap throw away gear when you know it's not good. Better to bring high quality gear and limit yourself to only the essentials I think.
was this at algonquin?
No it was not!
