      Druid City Games ma man great job on this game and i cant wait to have it home (in Portugal)
      Said that it didn't got the seal of excellence despite all the praise in this video but 8/10 is still awesome.
      Congrats =)

    The dice is used in a 2-player game. There is no solo variant, just FYI.

    I keep seeing Tom have trouble mentioning there being 4 little pigs when mentioning this game, but I thought I recall it being explained that the players are actually 4 different relatives of the original 3 little pigs. That's why the it isn't just 3 male pig pieces like the story we know.

    "Some of the best components I've ever seen in any game" - Tom Vassel Wow!

  • @JayBee10
    @JayBee10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    "The three...uh...four little pigs."
    I personally appreciate the overproduction on this game. It's refreshing to have something with this level of component quality (and minis!) that's so accessible and that I can easily share with my non-gamer friends. It's a nice reminder of what even simple games can be on an artistic level.

    We played where the foundations cost 2, the walls cost 4, and the roofs cost 6, not 2 each. The other way sounds better maybe for a quicker game but honestly it was still pretty fast at least for adults with the higher resource costs, and more time to gather and play cool cards.

    Glad I backed this on Kickstarter and look forward to getting my copy. Man, I was expecting the seal of excellence after such a high praised review! Game looks wonderful :) 🧙‍♂️

  • @Vimesey17
    @Vimesey17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Tom, I'm surprised this isn't a seal of excellence by the words you said during the review, do you mind clarifying?
    I would have thought "the bar for components", "11/10 components", "should be in any family's home" and seemingly very positive comments about the gameplay would warrant an 8.5+/10.
    Is it because it's a light kid's game and a bit simple? But surely this is what the game is, and should be, aiming for as a family game?
    Thanks

    • @TheDavidorse123
      @TheDavidorse123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vimesey17 I was thinking the same thing. But he did say that to get a seal of approval maybe a game that he'd want to play at any point in time. And this review he said that he wouldn't play this game at any time just when the occasion is kind of right. And that would, with the new scaling, cause it to not get a seal at all. But I think because of the game being such high quality and such great for family's it got the seal of approval.

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, am 8.5+ game is one you want to play more than almost any other. One you’d play at the drop of a hat again and again and again. I think this is a bit too light to warrant that.

    • @WolfGratz
      @WolfGratz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So in that case - yes it would mean, ipso facto that a family game can't be excellent simply due to it being created for a family scenario. How is that any more sensible than excluding heavy Euro games cos they are only suitable for experienced gamers with a penchant for that genre? The seal of excellence shouldn't depend on who is reviewing the game but whether it fulfils its role for the target players. So I'm sorry but I think your argument is fatally flawed.

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WolfGratz So you’re saying that a reviewers review is invalid because it’s based on that reviewers opinion? And if any one person out there loves a game, every reviewer should give it a 10? I can’t help but think that may be a flaw there too.
      Eric reviewed Stuffed Fables recently as a family game and loved it (I’m not sure if he issues Seals). Tom has loved family my games in the past. This game he probably rates an 8, that’s a great score! is that really the end of the world? Does it invalidate anyone else loving it? Does it mean anyone who Kickstarted it is an idiot? Of course not.
      It really does seem these days that if Tom doesn’t give a Kickstarted game a 10 people get really upset.

    • @WolfGratz
      @WolfGratz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would I be upset? It's no skin off my nose. All I'm saying is that the logic behind rating a game based on whether the reviewer would personally want to play a game over and over again is flawed. It's perfectly ok for you or I as individuals to make a decision on that basis but in my opinion the job of a professional reviewer is to make clear to his or her audience which area of the market the game is aimed at and then rate that game based on how well it fulfils that aim. It seems to me this particular game is aimed at families who like light games and does that excellently. I'm perfectly ok with Tom disagreeing with that - after all he is being paid for his professional opinion. But I'm not so ok with the idea that that opinion should be based on whether it will hit his table on a regular basis.

    UPDATE: I accept Tom's explanation. He called it an 8 in a later video and asked not to get hung up on ratings and seals. Fair enough. Meanwhile, 8 is a great rating and just missing the excellent seal seems reasonable. In any case, I am really looking forward to getting this game in the mail and putting my own opinion together. Thank you Tom for patience with us. Original: Only a Seal of Approval, Tom? You went on and on about this game and yet only an approval? That seems disappointing.

    • @thedicetower

      These days, approval is an excellent logo.

    • @BrianLiming
      @BrianLiming 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I get that the Seal of Approval is a good thing. Zee put the Seal of Excellence on Santa Maria yet seemed to have more issues with that game than Tom did this with this one. Something seems amiss. Oh well. It's your rating system.

    • @hardyworld
      @hardyworld 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking the same thing as Brian. Oh well, nothing wrong with being a very good game in the family-game genre (that puts it on par with Takenoko). What family-games do earn the seal of excellence from the Dice Tower? Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne and ???

    I wish they used some sort of symbology for the cards to make the game text free and language independent. I would have made it more appealing to a larger audience. There are much more heavy games that don't use any text and can still offer complex interactions. Great Western Trail is an example that comes to mind.

    Interestingly, it was the Grimm brothers who actually sanitized and popularized a lot of the traditional fairytales (until Disney came along).

    Many complaints below about the game being "over-produced". But what the complainers fail to acknowledge is that the over-production doesn't come at any extra expense.
    The game's "price point" was established before the Kickstarter campaign even began. It's because of all the money raised during the Kickstarter, is why and how the extra minis are included... essentially for free for everyone.
    So if the game is *not* costing any more with the minis than it would without, I'm puzzled why people are complaining?

  • @matofilipovic7818
    @matofilipovic7818 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For such a simple game there are way to many components, and indeed the whole game is overproduced (but gorgeous to look at).
    It can easily scare away more casual players, even though the game is casual in it's core.
    Can't say I was overly impressed with the game but that might because of the wrong crowd. I would still recommend it.

    Tom made a weird comment in the very beginning like "although it is called Grimm Forest... bla bla" - I hope he understand it is not "grim" but "GRIMM" as in the Brothers Grimm... Jacob and Wilhem Grimm, who compiled these stories in Germany in the 19th century...

    • @HeadCannonPrime

      The weird thing is that It goes WAY beyond the brothers Grimm though. It should be called Disney Forest.

    • @licotto
      @licotto 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cthulwho? That has nothing to do with it...
      He gave a near-perfect review -THAT was why it was a surprise. Yeah, I'm excited to get it and try it, but HE PLAYED IT ALREADY and gave it incredible comments, then suddenly fell flat on the Seal... but yeah, you're right somehow...??
      Whatever dude

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I apologise for humour. But if you want to go into it, he said “this may not be a game I’m going to be wanting to play the whole time”. Saying it’s a game he doesn’t want to play is NOT a near perfect review.
      He also said if he was reviewing it just on the components it would be a 10. But he’s not, components do not (and should not) make up for game play deficits. I agree as components go it’s amazing, but I’m not willing to pay top dollar for components if there’s no game attached. The dragon figure does what exactly? What’s the point of the Big Bad wolf figure? As far as I can tell someone says “the wolf appears at the brickyard, you lose your friend” and that’s it? You don’t need a figure for that!

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I speak as someone who rates Love Letter as a 10 because it does its job (quick filler) in a small package for a pocket money price and with no extraneous fluff. I’m not adverse to light games.
      But If they had made it a big box game and included a princess figure to award the winner for 10 seconds before packing the game away, and a figure of a guard to place in front of someone when accusing them after you played a Guard card and a ladies fan to wave after discarding the Countess and so on and charged three times the amount for the game, I wouldn’t rate it as high.
      It would still probably be an 8, as this one probably is with Tom, just not a 10.

    • @HeadCannonPrime
      @HeadCannonPrime 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The components are excellent, the game itself is less so. Its a fairly basic resource and build game. It has nowhere near the level of complexity or elegant design I would expect from Seal of Excellence games. If this game was not slam packed with minis and artwork it would be very average.

  • @Mark-OutWest
    @Mark-OutWest 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This game is wonderful! If it was half the price it would be a no brainer. But at $50 is too steep for what is here. The price point ALONE is what keeps me away. This is a light game and shouldn't cost anywhere near this.

    This seems like a very light game, so light that it’s clearly overproduced. This is a $15 card game that was pushed by Kickstarter to have miniatures, boards and inserts for no reason. Oh well, I’m sure kids will like it but it’s so light that I’m afraid it won’t get much playtime.

    • @ataru4
      @ataru4 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. I was waiting though the review for the gameplay and at the end thought is that it?
      Look at all these super excited kickstarter commentors though. Hopefully they like it, or their kids like it.

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup, miniatures that exist only to be placed on a location for mere seconds as you explain what they do then taken off again. It could so easily be played without 60% of the contents.
      Now that’s lovey and all, and if I were given it free I’d be more than happy to play it a couple of times, but I wouldn’t be happy to pay the price of those overproduced components for such a light game.

    • @josephowens1979
      @josephowens1979 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This game does have a straightforward rule set, though I think it belies its true nature. The notion of pushing extraneous add-ons in Kickstarter is a real concern though here it did not strike the same cord considering the audience.
      Chess can be played with a $2 set; Checkers and Go with rocks. Many of our hobby games could be made with $5 worth of cardboard and paper. These and others are often sold in packages or sets far above what is required. Most games tend to be overproduced if viewed though the lens of what you need to play. Just because something can be minimized does not mean it should be.
      This is an example of a hobby game that is 'overproduced' for good reason. Families with young children (the target audience IMO) will relish the experience of getting to play the giant out onto a location if even for a moment. With no repeated art, they will be able to enjoy each individual card and even discuss the fairy tales in question. The vibrant art elevates the production like a quality storybook. Additionally, the tactile feedback of building houses piece by piece lends a sense of accomplishment. The insert will help children visually check for the pieces when tidying up and will help keep the box supported under the crush of a shelf of board games. None of these are required and the game could be exclusively cards but children (and some adults I know) would surely be less engaged by that product.
      I think this common complaint may only be valid if you misunderstand the audience or the impact the components will have. This production is not trying to be a an old maid style throwaway - with so many custom abilities and a high price tag this game is encouraging adults to make an informed buying decision and include themselves in the game experience. Regardless, it seems to me that with modern designs game play alone is no longer the controlling interest when the publishing decision is made.

    I think the components are great but I have to say that such elaborate miniatures seem a little out of place in a family game. Enthusiasts tend to freak out over great minis, but for whatever reason other people either don't care or are even turned off by the overdone models. For a family game I would have probably preferred something a little simpler, but otherwise the game looks very enjoyable.

  • @conillet
    @conillet 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hate it that the miniatures have this lifeless grey colour, which makes it near obligatory to paint them. Couldn't they have made them, say, beige or some other nicer colour?

    Good game to play with the kids, but the play is too easy for adults.

      @@airbornegr4815 A downvote for the video isn't a review of the game though. Upvotes and downvotes are meant to represent the quality of the content, not the topic or subject of the video. Petty ass people, geez.

      @@airbornegr4815 Nah, you just mad cause they didn't share your opinion. But whatever it doesn't really matter, just an observation that I made, people can agree or disagree, I just think it's poor taste to down vote game review videos based on the game, rather than the content and quality of the video.
