1997 Sugar Bowl - #1 Florida State vs. #3 Florida Highlights

Just as it did with the Bowl Coalition, the Rose Bowl refused to participate in the Bowl Alliance, thus keeping #2 Arizona State from competing in the national championship game. Instead, the #1 Florida State Seminoles (11-0) would play Heisman-winning QB Danny Wuerffel and the #3 Florida Gators (11-1) for the national championship.
QB Danny Wuerffel, Florida, was the game's MVP.

ASU lost on the final drive of that game against Ohio State. The final vote of the season would have determined the National Champion. There was hardly ever a #1 vs #2 type game to determine champions before the BCS and now College Football Playoff. It's important to understand the exact circumstances that made this a National Championship game before looking ignorant to the situation. Florida were by far the best team in the country having wiped out everyone except then #2 Tennessee. That includes many ranked opponents. Ohio State's argument is weak considering their loss to #21 Michigan was nothing compared to Florida's to #2 Florida State in Tallahassee. Arizona State would have won the National Championship as an undefeated team should they have won and FSU lost. Again, know what you're talking about before making ridiculous excuses in the information.

It was 35-0 before halftime against Tennessee. The final score was pulling off the gas by Florida as they were never in danger of losing. They did almost lose to a terrible Vanderbilt team though. Still, they were obviously the best team in the country.
