Royal navy ships have pretty cool names usually. Illustrious, Victorious, Dragon & Victory etc. Mostly place names these days which aren't quite as exciting.
^ This is a big reason why they went to war because of the unfair middle men called Hongs, that made trade with china super expensive for China plates and tea which the UK wanted a lot of. So to balance this they sold loads of opium to a market that already was hooked on it, the Brits didn't just force it on none drug users there must have been a market for them to sell to in the first place. So they did that to get silver back from the Chinese since they only traded in silver so they could buy what they wanted. Shame that 10 minute history didn't mention all of this rather than making Britain sound like drug dealing imperialists who did it for laughs.
@@scarletcrusade77 You seem to have forgotten that OPIUM WAS ILLEGAL and Britain SMUGGLED it into China to sell it. The British had a monopoly over opium-growing in India and the British East India Company and other British companies smuggled it across the border in classic drug cartel fashion.
@@rebecca4680 Well yeah they smuggled it into china even though it was illegal, I never said the British were saints, they were doing it dirty because the Chinese ware doing them dirty. Having a monopoly on China wear and black tea which was in super high demand in Victorian Britain so they did what they did to get what they wanted, since Chinese traded in Silver only they have to get it somehow. So they sold opium to people who wanted it. Could have been easily avoided if they didn't make trade so hard with the British.
@@scarletcrusade77 . So China was "playing dirty" by controlling their own commodities and products? If it's your stuff, you can set the price; that's not "playing dirty". If you can't get business because the price is too high, well that's the consequence of setting your price, but it's still your right to set the price at whatever you want. The British were the only ones playing dirty by operating drug cartels and illegally selling opium in China.

As Chinese is my second language, you're forgiven for your pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese (don't get me wrong it's a good attempt)! As for your videos, they remain top notch!
Actually the locals are quite supportive of the war, don't forget it's not only the British are not the only ones benefiting and profiting from opium sales, the Cantonese and local officials are all getting rich off opium sales
This is a bit more complex. The Chinese had forbidden imports, requiring their exported goods to be bought with silver. Which lead to using whatever had enough leverage to override this: opium. From the Wikipedia article on the First Opium War: ' In the 18th century the demand for Chinese luxury goods (particularly silk, porcelain, and tea) created a trade imbalance between China and Britain. European silver flowed into China through the Canton System, which confined incoming foreign trade to the southern port city of Canton. To counter this imbalance, the British East India Company began to grow opium in Bengal and allowed private British merchants to sell opium to Chinese smugglers for illegal sale in China. The influx of narcotics reversed the Chinese trade surplus, drained the economy of silver, and increased the numbers of opium addicts inside the country, outcomes that seriously worried Chinese officials. '

You have to do the second one now. I'm excited for the future of your channel. Honestly you blow extra history out of the water.
Ok so this has nothing to do with the actual history of any of this, but the name HMS nemesis is cool as hell
Royal navy ships have pretty cool names usually. Illustrious, Victorious, Dragon & Victory etc. Mostly place names these days which aren't quite as exciting.
@@curtiswhyte3297 I stand corrected those are in fact really good names. It's hard to pick a favourite out of those. Maybe Audacious or Ambush.
HMS Nemesis does sound cool. You know you are boned if the enemy has an advanced ship named Nemesis.
@@generaladvance5812 Also HMS Dreadnought
No mention of the preluding tea-silver crisis in Britain?
^ This is a big reason why they went to war because of the unfair middle men called Hongs, that made trade with china super expensive for China plates and tea which the UK wanted a lot of. So to balance this they sold loads of opium to a market that already was hooked on it, the Brits didn't just force it on none drug users there must have been a market for them to sell to in the first place. So they did that to get silver back from the Chinese since they only traded in silver so they could buy what they wanted. Shame that 10 minute history didn't mention all of this rather than making Britain sound like drug dealing imperialists who did it for laughs.
Definitely an important context!
The walk cycles are so funny because the characters just waddle out of nowhere holding signs
1:22 And I say, England's greatest Prime Minister was Lord Palmerston.
Pitt the Elder!
bgclo LORD PALMERSTON!!!
I have no idea if the Siimpsons writers are really interested in British 19th century history, or just picked some random names, but there's an extra nerdy joke there in that the debate is usually Disraeli v Gladstone in that era.
Churchill?
@@nandinhocunha440 Impeach Churchill!
i want the "fun fact: No" stuff back.
plsplsplspls.
Fantastic video as always.
You can do a Five Second History exploring the role of the Maginot Line in WW2
Step 1: Discourage the Germans from invading Alsace Lorraine.
Step 2: ?
Step 3: Profit.
Step one was a rousing success. Everything else though...
@@justafaniv1097 Step 2, Germans invade Belgium and take France anyway.
Yeah this channel sold out and went down the drain!
France had a line
It no good
Belgium hate it
The Germans thought "fuck that" and went round, that's basically it
Dude these videos are so awesome. Keep them rolling
A ship like the Nemesis was the equivalent of having a B-29 Superfortress when your enemy had no aircraft to speak of.
I'm often in a Wikipedia black hole, reading about historical events and people. And this happens with this channel as well. I LOVE IT!
Britain: War to sell drugs
USA: War against drugs
Britain: Be like your father and sell drugs
USA: No drugs are bad
Britain: Drugs = money
USA: No
Britain: Dam it
Nah USA prefers to bring some of their Corpora... *cough* freedom instead.
CIA: sweating nervously.
If you pause at 0:20 you can barely make out "ags" on the box sinking, which I assume is "tea bags" well played. Love the attention to detail lol.
Basically the Chinese and British had the same belief: "Everyone must live under the Emperor/King/Queen"
So you means Hong Kongers just leave one Kingdoms to other Kingdoms?
@@someiwong6066 From what you constantly are now, they were much happier, as a British protectorate
I really like this new format, teaching history in a concise way. Keep going with it!
You forgot to include parts of Siberia, which wasn’t taken until 1860.
Opium War: "the most dreadful face of imperialism"
Maybe you can do the War of 1812 or Reconstruction in US history in this style
You know what, a ten-minute episode about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a blow-by-blow account would be fantastic in your style.
Love the new format, keep up the great work. Would love to see a video on the medici family or the history of florence
Not sure if this was the best rebranding. The name "Ten Minute History" was attractive to new subscribers. You can make content under the brand name that doesn't literally fit the name while staying in line with the mission statement of (I'm supposing), "The dissemination of historical knowledge". Yet, this is a good name. I wish you well in all your future endeavors.
"Civilizing force" my foot.
I find this channel GREAT !
keep up the good stuff :)
Loving your videos man! Will you cover the great siege of Malta 1565?
Tell me why a 4 minute video is better than the 30 minute video that my teacher sent me to do a short summary on
Britain: Countries protecting their own interests?
*How offensive*
I love that the China background just reads
"China China China
China China China"
*Smokes Opium*
Good video
And Fun fact: There will be more unequal treaties.
I'm digging this short format! You should do a short video on the Bear Flag Revolt, i.e. that month in 1846 when California was an independent republic.
3:00
**Gun beats spear**
*S A V A G E!*
The British Empire using a ship called Nemesis during a war where they're trying to force another country to let them sell a potent narcotic that's ruining their country is peak Bond villain. The irony.
I love these ten minute history breaks.
I love how a perfect peace plan that benefits both parties was ignored by both parties.
Jackninja5 It was ignored by the Chinese first and then they escalated their situation into totally fucked
Thanks for your vids they are awesome! Please do a video on the history of indigenous people in Siberia. It does not seem to get much coverage.
I think a good video to cover a topic on would be the Battle of Britain. It gave high morale to the British people and together stopped the Germans from invading their homeland.
0:16 The text on the back literately says China China China China China China China
I guess the British learned how to deal with that whole "getting your stuff dumped in the water" thing.
Virgin chinese conscript: I have fought some bandites with my pointy stick.
Chad british professional soldier: I have seen things...
Superchad Mysorean firework man: And now we mount a big firecracker on our pointy stick.
"Zexu" was his given name; "Lin" was his surname. Calling him "Zexu" is like calling the 16th president of the U.S. "Abraham".
I know asking seems rude but if you could consider doing an episode on the Beaver Wars that would be nice.
China: Most of our ships are so-called Junks.
Britain: SEND THE BEHEMOTH.
China: I hope you don't mean the HMS Nemesis.
Britain: SEND THE NEMESIS.
This video's lack of death is disturbing
“HMS Nemesis” probably the most badass name in naval history.
I need a Peak Britain Mug but i have a feeling you might need a bigger mug
I think a Peak Britain mug would encompass the tea itself
Maybe he could do it on a different product, like a chopping board
Love the new name and thumbnail layout, keep it up.
After you r done with the ww2 episode I think one about the rashiduns and the umayyads might be fun or the latin american wars of independence
As Chinese is my second language, you're forgiven for your pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese (don't get me wrong it's a good attempt)! As for your videos, they remain top notch!
I’m just waiting for one of the figures to hold up a “lol opium” sign.
1:30 U FORGET. THE TEA
Why does the Qing map show it without outer Manchuria?
Russian annexed outer Manchuria in 1860
Cool stuff, excited for those other bits of history that don't fit into the 10 minute template.
Actually the locals are quite supportive of the war, don't forget it's not only the British are not the only ones benefiting and profiting from opium sales, the Cantonese and local officials are all getting rich off opium sales
I have a feeling that i now understand where the frase 'a pice of junk' as in 'trash' comes from.
I'm not Chinese (I am Korean) and even I know it is pronounced as "Chi-shan".
I love your channel keep up the great stuff!!
Chinese Emperor: destroy the British
Every major European power: genius, why didn't we think of that before?
This is a bit more complex. The Chinese had forbidden imports, requiring their exported goods to be bought with silver. Which lead to using whatever had enough leverage to override this: opium. From the Wikipedia article on the First Opium War:
' In the 18th century the demand for Chinese luxury goods (particularly silk, porcelain, and tea) created a trade imbalance between China and Britain. '
It all sounds vaguely familiar.
3:09 Is this where the saying "piece of junk" comes from? Hmmmm
Just a quick note the Nemesis was not a Royal Navy ship so would not be a HMS. Only a little point mind and it does not really affect the narrative.
the Nemesis was not HMS, it was a john company ship
War against drugs? Kinda makes sense. But war to endorse drugs? History have some fascinating quirks
China: get off my lawn!
Britain: wait, that's illegal....BUY OUR DRUGS!
Unfortunately, Lancelot Dent and Queen Victoria wasn't being punished for the reason of Opium War Crime and UK seems never admit the Opium War Crime.
