btw, to anyone wanting to improve off of these vides, start disregarding your rating. Its only a number. I would play and lose 3 games in a row and i stopped playing as much as i should. In the last one week, I just forgot about rating and played my openings, analyzed games and played more. Around 5-10 rapid games a day and ive gone up 100 points in rating and im still crushing my opponents so its bound to go higher. TLDR; To get better, RATING IS ONLY A NUMBER. PLAY MORE. LEARN MORE. PLAY MORE. BETTER ELO.
That's my problem i focus on my moves and im winning like 6 or 7 games in a row then look at elo and im facing someone nearly 200 points higher and i panic
I think it was a matter of losing to a -200 rated player then a -400 rated player. That is going to kill any rating gains you'd hope to make and ruin the entire endeavor.
e5 move against Scandinavian used to come me scary back in old days but Danya roasting that move and crushing his opponent (as usual) made me feel like "Why i was scaring that kind of a stupid move?" Thanks Danya, you are really a good coach ;)
@@descendency yeah as a caro player, I wish people gave me free tempo in the first 5 moves like that. Could get the same position, as those were all common advanced caro ideas as well. though I didn’t spot that tactic
e5 is totally playable. It's not a terrible move and you shouldn't feel bad for struggling against it. In fact just look at this game - White played excellent chess and was competitive for 99% of the game despite the fact that he was playing against a GM with a 1000+ elo rating difference AND had wasted 3 tempo in the opening with pointless pawn moves! e5 "Improved French" is a legit opening which gives play for both sides and has equalish 50/50 results in the online databases. It's only at the top 2200+ OTB level where it finally falls out of use.
Players who are strong tactically sometimes make weird pawn moves like this in the opening - or play extremely offbeat lines - so that they can completely get out of theory and turn the game into a pure battle of calculation. I think it's a valid strategy and I'm glad that I get to face many different styles when I queue for a match. I try to play principled, classical chess myself but it would be less interesting if everyone had the same style. I actually thought this was the most competitive episode in this edition of the speedrun so far (there have been SO MANY games featuring early blunders dropping a full piece rendering the exercise pointless) and I believe the person playing White would have absolutely crushed the average non-GM 1600 the way he played this game. He showed extremely impressive tactical awareness for this rating level.
I don't usually play Scandi, but I wanted to try this and instead of taking my d pawn my opponent immediately went 2. e5 and I knew I was gonna have a blast. I played a solid game having everything in mind and despite making a few positional mistakes to which I couldn't find a good move, I came out on top in the endgame. I haven't played such a quality game in a while. And my opponent's elo was almost 100 higher than mine. Thanks for the inspiration, Daniel!
These video's teach me so much. I love this speedrun playlist! The way you explain your train of thought is more educational than anything else I've ever seen chess-related. Thank you!
This video probably added at least 30-50 points to my rating. I play this in bullet all the time with good results for black, but never developed my Queen's Bishop like that. Thanks. FYI, I am around 1550 bullet on Lichess.
this was great! i always play the scandi and recently opponents have started to push the e pawn instead of taking.. i learned if i transpose it to french advance variation, it throws people off, but it awkward game to play for black. now i know i have to play the bishop out first. this is awesome! thanks Danya!
6:30 on a Sunday morning and I had a quick peep on my TH-cam and there is Danya’s latest upload. I can tell you a cup of tea so early on a Sunday morning never tasted that good.
Omg Danya pls never stop fooling around with the off-the-cuff impressions... even a bit of Zizek thrown in there, lovin it Also thanks - in my stupid bullet career I've never had time to think about the obvious Bf5 after 2. e5... I know I should play longer time formats
Im glad to know for the first 5 moves of this line i came up with the right ideas because it was so confusing when people started playing this against me
No, it's fine. He's (mostly) joking. Everyone says they hate the French because they think the games are boring - not because they think it's a bad opening. It's a meme more than anything. If you like solid, positional chess the French a great choice at any level. In fact it was played by at least one GM in the Grand Prix around week ago (Nakamura vs Bacrot). The Caro-Kann seems to get all the love at the moment while the French gets none but that's a matter of fashion rather than any objective good/bad quality. Chess players are totally in thrall to the trends and what's flavour-of-the-month when it comes to openings. IMO you should take almost all opening advice of that sort with a huge grain of salt. The French is objectively one of the top tier reputable openings but even if it wasn't - below master level you can make absolutely anything work. The minute nuances of one opening over another are only a concern for high level classical OTB matches.
For untitled players - and especially in online blitz at all levels - the main thing is that an opening suits you stylistically and that you enjoy playing the positions. Even unsound openings can be made to work.
1.e4 d5 2.e5?! Bf5 I get as black plenty of times. Very often I would allow white too much kingside counterplay and lose when I should not have. This video shows how taking your time to parry white's empty threats goes a long way... thanks for all the insights!
I hate when people plays e5 against the scandinavian and thinks they are clever like "hehe I'm taking space on the center", that's just a bad move, don't play that guys.
I'm over here having an anxiety attack while looking at his clock, and he's casually asking questions to his chat and waiting for replies. I only wish that one day I feel half as comfortable with time management as he does.
Opponent: exists
Danya: so this is *already* a mistake
Lmao
Danya: what should we play?
Opponent plays next move.
Danya: this is a mistake
1:55 I like the thought of danya walking around his apartment doing chess impressions all day
French defense: Scandinavian amazing bishop variation
wait until you learn about the caro kann...
(joke)
Edit: I didn't watch the first 3 minutes of the video when I made this comment
"What is the main drawback of the French? Other than the fact that it sucks."
He's hilarious, i remember a time when he said "A creative move [by my opponent], but definitely not objectively sound."
Lmfao
Belly laugh
It only sucked for the white sq bishop. Otherwise it's a strong position. I've won a lot of games against 1200s playing the French.

The move e5 was bad but following it up with a3 and h3 made it worse. Wasting that much tempo is just… not good.
how is a good french scary

Best youtuber chess GM!ive seen most of them and Danya is far away the best!
In positions like at 3:10 mu instinct is always to push c4, go Na5 to b3 and then pawns forward. So much control.

OK but what is main drawback of the French other than the fact that it sucks?
