Aespa uses so much layering and complex layering in the studio that it is not that they can't sing live, it is impossible to complex layer let alone simple layering live with no backtrack and sound good. They show how they do it in their behind the scenes recording sessions. Example: NingNing will sing her part with a high note then again with a medium note then again with a low note. Production will then mix those 3 notes at 10% low note, 20% medium note, and 70% high note. That is simple layering. Impossible to replicate live. Complex layering is if more than 1 singer is singing the same line and they mix both layers like that to give the note 6 different layers. Spicy is so complex it is impossible to replicate live more than any other of their songs. The girls are awesome and can really sing. NingNing is my girl.

Some of them want 30% live, some of them 50% some of them even only want to play the pre recording vocal. Especially live performances, it sounds so bad when it aired, so even if the artist sings live, what we hear through the tv will be not 100% live vocal. Even in live show like concerts too. That’s why many fans are really concerned about encore stage nowadays. I am MY, i have watched their show in real live, even though they use vocal layers, you can hear their live vocals clearly. Especially Winter and Karina, cus they have more power in their vocals. Note: if you go to the live show and know that this artist use pre recorded and it hears well blended that you only hear one layer of vocal, huge possibilities that they lip-sync. I’m sure many idols play pre recorded and lip-sync even in their concerts 😂 but SM artists are not one of them. Cus i have proofed it myself 😂

SM (and kpop companies in general) used to use live vocals much more, especially on shows and tv performances. but live vocals on tv performances/shows are much rarer now, especially since covid. including the groups you mentioned earlier, like SHINee, RV, EXO. SM always have and always will employ live vocals from all of their groups during paid for events (so concerts, festivals, SM town, etc.).

The production engineers, are asked to remaster the recorded vocals (could be pre recorded or they used the audio from the stage performance), probably also including manual pitch correction so that the vocals in TV would sound perfect.

But I don’t like when music shows and companies make that choice for them in post-production….
