NZ is about quality of life. The trade-off is a high cost of living. I'd still take NZ any day. I've lived in the US and Australia, and I always end up back in NZ. The high cost of living is worth the quality of life. A lot of Kiwis take NZ for granted but it's a lot better than almost any other country in the world.
When we left Auckland for Sydney a couple of decades years ago, Auckland was dirt cheap compared to the rest of the world. When we left Sydney for London 15 or so years ago, Auckland and Sydney were both still dirt cheap and seen as backwater countries compared to the rest of the world. But now that the NZ and Aus dollar has increased in strength and the increased globalisation of the world, Auckland and Sydney are more expensive to live than most of the world (especially food). I actually find living in London and Europe and most of North America cheaper than Auckland or Sydney. NZ and Aus are now seen as "safe lifestyle resort" style countries.
Totally agree with you paws. Many if my friends in America talk about how housing is a lot more affordable in their state compared to Auckland. But at the same time San Fran and NY continue to be much more costly vs even New Zealand. Things have really sky rocketed here over the last few years especially the food and transportation costs. Thanks for the insight 👍😊
I still ask, why tf are everything do expensive? Answers for myself was that the government has all resources for advertising none for the accommodation of these people that were meant to be happy to be here 🙄
I grow up in New Zealand Wellington and then moved to London and all I can say is that renting an apartment is expensive but everything else in London is cheaper, food and transport but new Zealand its way too expensive for everything. I'm glad I moved to London. 😊
@Crypto Hunter it's a shithole for anyone who doesn't earn at least 4k a month. And even if you do earn that much it still very unsafe city, even in most expensive areas there is gangs, killings and so on, media just doesn't report any. I know because I work in security in the most expensive area.
Love this video ... Im in Melbourne and my mum is always telling people that the cost of living in NZ is very high compared to here. Now I can tell people to check this vid out since you elaborate more on it. 👍💛
I've lived in Auckland and my life, and yet this video was so so helpful and informative - espesh for a Uni student whose just finished their degree and working to move out. I love your style of videos and editing as well! New sub!
Hello thank you so much for joining the community and also for the encouraging words 😁👋 always good to rep your home town. N good luck for moving out its one of the hardest steps!
I lived in the south west of the UK for 3 years and I always thought the UK is the most expensive until I visited New Zealand. I stayed in Auckland for a few months and God I was shocked! Everything is so expensive and sometimes even more than the UK. At least in the UK you can get cheaper food and a few other things if you check carefully. But I don't regret my visit to NZ, it was the most rewarding trip ever. NZ is so beautiful, unique in its own way, rich and vibrant.
Thanks for the perspective Sundai! I guess compared to cities like Tokyo and nyc Auckland would be considered cheap. But when we consider to other countries in Asia it's pretty expensive 😅
Thank you! Made this video with the intention of it being useful for people who want to visit Auckland but glad it's helpful for locals too. Cheers for watching and dropping a comment 😁👋
8:15 I remember when I was in NZ for some months I took it for granted to drink from the tap and I was really unsure after the first time because for me it tasted a lot like chlorine. My mates told me it tasted normal and not like chlorine. Maybe its because im spoiled with swiss tap-water. I later learned, the more i went away from Auckland (and probably the other bigger cities) the fresher the water tasted. So if you're used to really fresh water, you should be prepared to the city-water. You can drink it though and you will get used to it pretty fast. Upside: When I came back to Switzerland, it was the best thing ever to drink the super-clear swiss water again ;)
Ooooo swiss tap water sounds awesome. Tap water is definitely something you take for granted living in your own country. Then you go overseas and realize most the world has to buy bottled water.
Currently in East Africa ,Nairobi en you guys are doing it all 4 times the price tag starting from the rent (covers power & water)to grocery stores ,fuel is 1 dollar a litre so is milk . Unlimited net for 10 devices at 40 , natural blended juice at 3 dollars a litre (DelMonte) ... air bnb at 100 dollar a night (high end) in tourism regions . Full of surprises ... so is product market for start up biz
This was awesome, I'm feeling a lil overwhelmed at the prospect of bringing my family down to Auckland in the new year with the cost and considering currency exchange etc...
All good I'm glad you found this video useful 👍 moving here with the whole family is definitely a daunting task but if you can land a job in the right industry it makes covering living expenses a lot easier 🤞😊
Wow Just started following you guys and working our way through all your amazing videos! Making us homesick but enjoying life here in Chicago. Keep up the good work. Love it!
Hey mate thank you so much for dropping by and leaving such a nice comment 😁✌appreciate your support and lots of kiwi footage coming up 😁🌿 must be quite a huge change going from nz to Chicago 😳 have an awesome week ahead!
Wow! What a great breakdown, very detailed, and covering all the necessities for living. We live in the Bay Area (Sunnyvale, California). We’re about 40 miles south of San Francisco. It is very expensive to live in this area because we’re right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Pay rates are higher here compared to other areas, which helps a little bit, to pay for accommodations 😬. People from other areas often called us crazy for living in the Bay Area, because of the cost. We also have the best weather in the country, so we pay for that too😰 Ideally, for renters (like us), you rent from a family owned apartment. Rent is usually cheaper compared to corporate owned properties. Hopefully, we can buy a house soon. That’s the ultimate ideal situation 🤞🏽
We've had a few people comment from the states and it seems some of the more popular cities in America as well as some of the European countries are a lot more expensive than New Zealand. Really interesting findings and you're absolutely right where there are high paying jobs there are high paying costs hahaha 😅
Oh man 3000$ per month is amazing. In Amsterdam or any other big city in the Netherlands here you rent a little room for 1000€ = (about: 1800$) per month. Then you have 1 small bedroom and a shared kitchen and shower. New Zealand sounds like a dream
Aotearoa & Hawai'i are comparable in regards to the cost of living. The only thing is HI is slightly more expensive than NZ overall, except for transportation (public transport, petrol, etc.) and clothing. Food prices are high in HI since most of it has to be shipped from the U.S. mainland. Homes in the Hawaiian suburbs tend to be smaller in living space compared to NZ suburbs since space is limited being on smaller islands than the North Island and South Island. Hawai'i and Aotearoa do share a common Polynesian culture and the nature in both "countries" are breathtakingly beautiful. The price to live in paradise, right? I wouldn't mind living in NZ even if it's for a temporary stay. Thank goodness there is direct flights from HNL to AKL!
Aloha thank you so much for the detailed post. Yen and I are actually considering Hawaii as one of the travel destinations for 2020 so this was super useful. Really want to try some of the og poke stores. Good to know how we should be budgeting our money. Sounds like it's gonna overall cost us a bit more than a new Zealand holiday which is all good as you say it's the cost of staying in paradise and in my opinion totally worth every dollar. Looking forward to experiencing some Hawaiian culture 😁❤
One thing I have learned from watching this video is I will most likely never ever move back to NZ 😂 the cost of living for 2 in NZ is more expensive then what a family would usually cost here in Brisbane. Such an informative video. Love it guys♥️
Hey Gen on one hand we are super stoked you enjoyed the video. But on the other hand it's kinda sad that it's putting people off coming back 😥 but to be fair I totally understand it's kinda hard justifying things when prices are so high for everything. For us so many family and friends here too hard to leave 😅
Peter and Yen ohhh guys don’t be sad!! That makes me sad haha. It’s not the cost of living (and definitely not this video) that would deter me from returning home it’s the fact that I have my parents here. I was just in awe with how pricey it would be for me if I were to move home with my husband & two kids. But we are proud Kiwis♥️that love living in Australia 😂 xx
When I lived in New Zealand grocery shopping for me was a struggle coming from the States and even Canada were things are so much more cheaper, maybe not the best for you, but I could afford to be unhealthy LOL. With that said I'd move back today! I miss the laid back life there. I used to live on Herald Island.
Yeah that's a tough one even though things might be a lil expensive in New Zealand but you definitely live a much better quality of life even for things you might take for b granted like the fresh air makes a huge difference. ❤🇳🇿
Well, thanks for your video, it was super interesting. I'm Italian and living in NZ is my dream, but it seems pretty hard, 'cause living is really expensive down there. I just hope job pays very well. Thank you by the way
Um a hop card costs $15, $5 of which is credit. The $10 card cost is non refundable, you only get the credit that is on the card back when you give it up.
Planning to visit Auckland in the near future. Gotta say your videos are really helpful and I can see all the hard work you put behind them. Have to save up a little more with how expensive everything is 😂
Thanks Jose! Glad this video was useful to you. We've been having a blast making videos from our home country whether it's food or activity related. If you're in town let's do a colab video if you're keen 😁✌
See, I'm moving from Ontario, Canada to Auckland New Zealand in October and this is more reasonable than pricing here (currently). The housing, food, gas, utilities, phone bill are all very similar to what it is here, the big difference is the living wage. In Ontario, minimum wage is $15 an hour vs. here its about $21. That alone makes a huge difference!
I have always heard NZ is a little more expensive but had no idea!! That gas price is really high but everything else seemed a little more reasonable! Loved the information and great job on showcasing! After watching all the food, I think that is a little more then we pay, actually quite a bit more haha
😅 gas and food tends to be the stand out expensive items in New Zealand. A few people these days have decided to live full time in RVs now reminds me of some people I know hahahaha 😊👌 hope this video gives you some budgeting info in case you ever decide to come over 😎
I find that literally the only option is to have a great paying job (100k+) or a business that will bring in the same amount just in order to save money after paying for accommodation, food and transport.
About right I think the household income needs to be around 100k as all of the essentials take a big chunk of your money thanks for your input Matthew!
Would love to see you do an update of this video now, Peter and Yen. Because I'm sure we've all noticed that living costs in NZ are through the roof right now!
I live in southern california and this actually doesn't seem too bad. I think it's actually cheaper in NZ. At least the rent I think. Had a friend move their 10 years ago and he loves it. Looks amazing!
New subsciber here! LOL this was such a good insight on what life is like at present in NZ. I left to come live here in Australia last year, and I have noticed prices have increased back home. Good to see kiwis share their thoughts on these topics - makes me miss home hardout lol keep up the awesome vlogs Peter and Yen! Blessings to you both!
Heya Veni thank you for joining the community glad you enjoyed the video 👌😁 Are you finding life in Australia is more expensive than New Zealand? We find that we get super homesick as soon as we leave new Zealand too but yeah prices are really getting up there these days 😥
@@PeterandYen yes I do miss NZ because of family and the lifestyle but I feel that life is a little cheaper here in Australia. Just can't believe how housing costs have soared over the years. Keep up with the informative content - it's always good to see what NZ is up to nowadays lol 👌💯
Rent, food and utility prices are the same ish here in Sydney... despite our petrol being a bit cheaper, travelling around is bit expensive if you’re driving cause we have to pay tolls. We also have to pay for 3rd party insurance on top of our rego fees which is like $400 ish for 6months.
All these high living costs.. such a struggle right! Well at least we live in two really nice cities where we have clean air and wonderful scenery. By the way yen and I will be coming over to Sydney in October to make some content 😊👌 just a lil bit b of early info for ya ❤
Peter and Yen yaaaaaaaay 😍😍😍🎉🎉🎉 omg you guys should do a meet and greet I’ll try come up with a list of some nice restaurants here for you guys to try out 😍👌
Haha thank you! Appreciate it! 🙏 We've got a pretty jam packed schedule for our very short trip but if we're in the same area at the same time be cool to meet up in person to say a quick hello 🙂👋
Thank you for the compliment 😊 we do try and get the quality better and better on these videos. Been a pretty steep learning curve hahaha getting there 😅👍
Hey bro thanks! Yeah hopeful this video will help out those looking to come to Auckland New Zealand with their budgeting. Though the video will prolly show things are expensive here hopefully people see the quality of life is awesome too 😊👌
Thank you for watching and leaving us a comment Nivea 😁👍 we made this video to help people who are interested in visiting New Zealand. Have a great weekend 😊
This is very detailed and Informative thanks Peter and Yen for sharing! I also shared it to my friends who are asking me about NZ 😊 great video! I’m always looking forward at your new videos! 😊
Hi Liz thank you so much for sharing. We made this video to help people who are thinking about moving to new Zealand so that they have an idea of how much money they need to put aside. Glad you found it informative 😊👌 we love your videos too ❤
I was born in NZ, I left to live in the UK 20 years ago so have spent most of my life in the UK. I came back for a short period for work/holiday for 3 months. I stayed with a lady in Whakatane in a granny flat type building 6x3 meters. She told me it cost her $8000 for it plus an additional $8000 for the man to come put it up for her (was a flat pack pre-assembled type one) Took him 2.5 days. I couldn't believe it! $16k all up. In the UK could've bought the same size thing for £2500 and £400 for a couple of guys to assemble it if wanted. So that's like $6000 all up equivalent. She showed me a fence that was not long put up, appox 8m long and it cost her $800 (standard post set in concrete and paling job) took the guy 1 day and that was just putting palings only on - no posts or rails. Then showed me a tree she was getting cut down and that was $800 as well. Its actually a pure rip off. I really was astounded, she told me its pretty standard in NZ. Question is... Why is it! I kind of found NZ a very greedy money hungry nation overall, sorry but it's just the vibe I got there. Sad really. The UK is definitely cheaper by a long shot, and food wise too, and rent, higher wages and lower house prices overall and much more opportunity for careers and travel is cheap. I sold an old 2004 Citeron work van just before I went to NZ, £300 - basically scrap value. In NZ it would be worth about $7000. Astounding! Even though I am a NZer, I couldn't live there again, I do love NZ, don't get me wrong but it's just unaffordable and too slow and kinda feels a bit behind the rest of the world with many things, whilst at the same time being extremely expensive. It's an odd combination.
Hello I think one of the most interesting things has been reading all the comments after posting this video. Thanks for sharing your experiences from UK especially connecting them to similar experiences in New Zealand. No doubt it does cost a fair bit to live here but from others I've found that there are a lot of US and European cities that cost even more. On top of that Australia costs more too. The happiness we get from living here also far outweighs the cost so gotta stay 😁🇳🇿
We left NZ exactly 3 years ago after 1 year in Auckland and 5 in Dunedin. We had many many reasons to leave but right up there was cost of living, it's ridiculous. Compared to the UK most things are double or treble the cost in NZ. I honestly don't know how people survive in NZ, all our wages just went on the basics, there was never anything left over. So all that happens is you lead an incredibly boring life in a country that's not really very exciting. Best thing we ever did was sell up and move back to the UK. Life is so much easier and fulfilling.
I left Auckland for Toulouse, France and let me tell you this : it sometimes can be cheaper here in France ! And you can drive 2 hours and end up in another country
Wow you did a great job breaking all of this down! It seems more expensive there than the USA but the quality of living seems to be better. I am so jelly that you can play the piano >.< I've always wanted to learn. All that food looked SO good, especially the egg that you cut into. Being able to drink the water out of the tap is really convenient, I would love to be able to do that! PS. love your titles and aerial shots!
😂😂😂 unfortunately the piano playing was me just pushing random buttons while an automatic song was playing. Never too late to learn how to play though you should do it 😎👌 yes absolutely I think it's more expensive than quite a few states in three US relatively speaking. But you are absolutely right the quality of living here is really good, work life balance and cleanliness to name a few 😊👍
Considering New Zealand is mostly a farming economy the price of meat dairy and veggies is astronomical, what happened? when I lived in NZ in the 1970s they practically gave meat and dairy products away, it was way cheaper than the UK where I had came from, now I think there would be riots here if we had to pay some of the prices you all have to pay and as for housing costs blimey I thought here in England was expensive but compared to Auckland our prices are a steal and I never thought I would say that, this video was an eye opener for anyone thinking of moving there.
Groceries/Gas and rent in NZ are expensive 😕 but takeaways are soooo cheap lol. Renting in Melbourne you can get a 4bdrm, 2bthrms and double garage for $370 depending what suburb! But our takeaways here dont compare to NZ, lol. Awesome video though guys! Ive contemplated so many times to move back but the crazy prices make me stay in Aus lol
What the 4 bedroom for 370.... that would be a dream come true here in Auckland hahaha. Glad you enjoyed the video. I do totally get why a lot of people move, it is pretty hard saving up money in New Zealand. For us since all our family and many friends are here makes it hard to leave 😅 plus the food is pretty good too 👌
This vlog made me realize how cheap Kenya is even if we keep complaining that the cost of living is rising. The apartments and houses look awesome though. This was very insightful.
Thank you glad you enjoyed this one. Kenya would be an awesome place to visit one day. But yes you are right it is booming and I'm sure prices will go higher over time. But hopefully that means so does pay 😁👌 in New Zealand the pay hasn't quite caught up with prices 😂😂😂
Wonderful video! I live in San Diego and the cost of living is very similar, the main difference is that on top of all the living expenses, we still have to pay for healthcare. So for me, NZ is actually a little bit cheaper. Does NZ have different school districts or do they all operate as one? Here, school districts also determine the price of some homes: better schools, more expensive homes.
Regarding the school districts in the big cities it works exactly the same. The better school zones are generally surrounded by higher priced properties.
Great video guys, I found this video so informative! 👍🏻 It was also very helpful to see the graphs/diagrams you made to break down the cost of living in Auckland. ✔️ Your piano playing is amazing Peter, you should include more of it on the channel! 😃🎵
Hahahaha Chelsea sorry to disappoint but I was literally button bashing while the auto player was going 😂 glad you enjoyed the video though we have been really enjoying reading comments from around the world as people compare their cities to Auckland 😊🖖
Hello hello Aaron and Wera glad you found this useful, hopefully if you do come to NZ it will help with all the budgeting 👍 don't let the expenses put you off NZ is amazing 😊🌱
Thanks guys! We're pretty happy with the way these videos came out too. In the end keeping our content more varied works well for us as we like mixing things up 😁✌
Fuel in NZ isn't too bad. In the Czech Republic it's about the same cost, but minimum wage is about $4.70 NZ... A 1 hour bus ticket is $1NZ An all day underground ticket in Prague is $7.40NZ A first class train ticket from Auckland to Hamilton would be about $10. I get a half litre of beer at the pub for between $1.70 and $2 Rent a modern 2 bedroom apartment for $156NZ a week including power, water and heating. Get a meal at a local restaurant for $10NZ including a beer.
wow that was a great content well I am not in a wish to move to NZ but as a Food Vlogger will visit someday over there and with your video I have an idea what would it cost me for 2 weeks roughly....Thanks for that
Hey mate thanks for the feedback! Yes as a foodie this is a great destination lots of variety and ingredients are super fresh 😉👌 hope you found the video useful for your budgeting 👍
Nothing like watching you guys stuff at 1.20 am haha. Those little drawings are dope and I didn't know you play the piano like a boss. Nice stuff bro! Possibly a theme song coming any time soon? Haha. And damn it sure isn't cheap there. I try to eat mostly organic foods too so groceries would be through the roof haha. I guess you just have to make sure you're ballin' hard income wise ey to keep up with all those prices ey? Anyway it does all of us some good to struggle for a bit so we can appreciate the abundance more. As long as we can get out the struggle. But you guys apartment and your parents place look niceee
Hey bro 😂😂😂 truths need to be told... I just turned on the auto song function and pretended to play 😂 yeah man New Zealand is not a cheap place to live at all basically everything is pretty expensive and I think that's the cost of living in a remote paradise. A lot of food is very organic though and costs similar to regular food. We've been appreciating and struggling for years hahahaha lots of hard work does pay off though we are living pretty comfy 😊 blessed. Have a good one man 🖖
hahah you cheeky bastard! I was watching on my phone otherwise I might have caught you out lol. Nice man, I hope to visit this remote paradise some day. maybe shoot a music vid there! Some sick locations I bet
Amazing locations here man would be perfect for your music videos 😊👍 would also be so cool to meet you in person I think we would have a lot do catch up on 👊😁
US is blessed with good prices. In portugal 1L of gasoline is 1.5€ roughly. 1gallon = 3.8L that's 5.7€ per gallon. In USD... 6.9$... And the average monthly salary is about 800€.
Hey mate yeah New Zealand is definitely a bit costly to live in. But you are absolutely right there are a lot of positives living here. Beautiful nature, stable government nice infrastructure. It is a great country 😊👍
Hey bro yeah the comments section has been super insightful to read as well. It seems like there are a few European countries and American states that are even more expensive than New Zealand and Australia can be a lot cheaper or similar depending which city you're in.
Ayeee this was awesome and so accurate! Trav and I pay similar for all those things and we’re in an apartment 🙌🏼 except for water we don’t pay the fixed only the water in and out - that’s about $20ish a month. Also petrol where we live is about $2.30L 😨 nice vid! Super informative!
Hey guys awesome to see more kiwi content creators 😊 gonna come check out your videos too ❤ glad to get you to validate our research. I got the water bill averaged from my parents and my friend who lives in st Luke's. Lil tip south Auckland has cheaper petrol than central 😉👍
If I could land a really, really high paying job, I'd like to live in Auckland. The nice suburbs as so fucking nice but you gotta dish out probably $3m+ to get a house.
Hey guys - so informative, great video. Can we just take a moment to realise - NZ population is only 2 million short of London! ...that's mental and Australia is only 24 million - insane!
Hey guys thanks for watching wow guess we've grown a fair bit over the last few years. Crazy that we're almost as populated as London now. Yeah for a massive country/continent Aussie population is pretty small. Hope to see you both in New Zealand one day 😊👌
Hello hello 😊👍 thanks for the suggestion. If you have any specific questions about income let me know and I'll be happy to answer. Glad you enjoyed the video 😁
@@PeterandYen I would like to know, if you also know, how much is a regular salary (per month) like a bus driver or something, and also how much is a high paid job like a scientist
Assuming both people work for about 40 hours a week for the whole year. A minimum wage salary will earn you around $35,000 a year before tax. Where a data scientist would get around $100,000 a year before tax. You get taxed much lower at the lower income threshold and higher as you earn more. Hope that helps 😁👍
Around $30000-35000 a year before tax on a lower or minimum wage. If you're in a higher wage job you could earn an income six figures. Depends on what jobs you're qualified for, also job experience in the field you apply to. Taxation is according to income brackets. In addition, if you have lots of kids and your income doesn't suffice, the government has a doles system. But there are stringent categories in receiving social security/financial help in NZ. The WINZ body looks after it... (Work and Income NZ ).
Daaaaaamn that is expensive petrol you guys have!! lol Very nice vid and put together really well!! awesome work! I don't think my family would survive in New Zealand, a lot pricier compared to Aus.
Hahahaha learnt it all from you and your informative vlogs hangry and Andy 👌 yeah petrol is a bit of a shocker here. I would walk but everything is like 10 to 20km away too hahahaha 😭
Auckland is expensive just like any major city would be like newyork, london, paris. Its the same everywhere... Im sure smaller cities are a lot cheaper than auckland.. My friend rented a room in London for which he was paying £200/week lol ( just 1 room ) and this was about 5 years ago
Love your parent's house! Here in LA, a 2 bedroom + 2 bathroom apartment goes for about 3000 usd/month... I think that translates to 4500 nzd/month... maybe we gotta consider moving to New Zealand 😊
Super informative video! Planning to make a trip to New Zealand in the future and this was a great overview of what to expect with prices, thanks guys!
Thanks for watching Shereena this video is 100% made for people like you who are thinking about coming to New Zealand for holiday. Hope it helps you with sorting out your budgets. Come visit soon summer is around the corner and New Zealand summer's are the best 😀👌
Sweet price for gas - we pay 2,73 NZD for liter in Germany. Wow, your Dad's house is incredible! Costs for housing are equal to the costs in Germany. Alright - why do I still live here? The costs are probably the same. Mate, you probably have to show me around in Auckland in the near future, lol. Very useful video!
Hey bro wow sounds like Germany is quite an expensive country to live in too. Thanks for that info 👍 if you ever come to New Zealand let's catch up for sure 😊
My wife and I are prepping to move to New Zealand. It's really interesting because we live in one of the cheapest states in the US, and the cost or living is nearly identical... but the QUALITY of living is just so incomparably poor here. We can't wait to get to Aotearoa.
Awesome detailed vid Pete. It is pretty pricey comin back home... im comin frm melbs but an orig aklder lol.. but still... great food.. vibes & fam n mates really makes it all worthwhile. A good thing to note also is that for accomo for travelers browse thru air bnb as opposed to hotels/motels.. so many kool kiwi's offerin up their nice homes at affordable prices too, im currently browsin thru em atm😳.. God bless & keep up the great vids 😊
Hello Liv thank you glad you enjoyed it 😊 yes it definitely it pricey living in Auckland these days but you are totally right you have to weigh that up vs the awesome vibes that you can only get in New Zealand. That's why no matter where we go we always end up missing home. Air bnb can definitely save you some money if you're staying for a while. Hope you have an awesome week ahead 😊👌
Hey dude, Im actually kinda planing to move to New Zealand in order to obtain my masters degree as well as work after I'm done with that. I was just wondering if i could be in contact with you to ask you some of the questions I have regarding the move. It would be lovely if you respond! Thanks!
Hi sure thing, you can either ask us on here or we're also on IG and Facebook if you'd like to message us on either of those platforms with your questions 🙂 We'll do our best to help answer 👍
thanks for your reply I'm trying to get there. I like your video and it helped me a lot to know about NZ, will come and enjoy. I appreciate your effort to give info.
Yooo awesome to hear 😉👌 this video is for everyone thinking about travelling to New Zealand hopefully it will actually help with your budgeting 🖖 don't forget to give us a shout when you're here 👍
Great informative video bro. As a Kiwi who left for the UK 16 years ago (when petrol was $1.20/L !! ) I can't believe how expensive things have got over there. Just looking at bread, 2x loaves for $5.50 where as here in the UK I can get the same loaf for £0.59 (or $1.17)! I would really love to come back to NZ to live & bring up my son but I'm not sure I could afford to now. I mean even the average NZ wage is lower than the UK equivalent. Perhaps you could do another video on what wages are like for a range of jobs, low to high skilled?
Yeah bro prices have really become inflated here in New Zealand over the last 16 years. But income has come some ways thankfully. If you check trademe a lot of that wage info is on there 👍
Cool comprehensive video, guys. Awesome thumbnail too. At least it's not as expensive as Perth in general. Perth is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Housing prices in Perth are some of the highest in Australia too. But petrol is way more expensive in NZ than the average $1.50/L in Perth. Japan costs about ¥150/L. Renting my 2 bedroom apartment with a kitchen and no living room costs ¥45,000 a month just one stop from Osaka. As you know eating out in Japan can be very cheap but it's super expensive in Perth.
Yo Lin this is very important topic for those wanting to visit New Zealand so I really wanted to make sure this video is really comprehensive. Never knew Perth was so expressive. Maybe it's from all that mining money over the years. Osaka rentals sounds like dream come true way better than a 2 bedroom in Tokyo!!! Thank you for that info really good to know 👍🤔 gets is thinking about living in Osaka!
I lived in Perth for a bit. The cheaper rentals were $400 a week. Cost $50 a week to get into town for work on public transport. $10 for a basic pint of cider at a cafe... Just off the top of my head. I'd say supermarket prices weren't too different from NZ.
Hey bro yeah they gradually get more and more natural. Still not fully letting out all the personality yet but it'll get there. Cheers for checking these videos out man! 👊
Minimum wage is quite high, however salaries and wages on the whole are extremely low when compared to the cost of living, It does not balance out, you're welcome.
No worries thank you so much for watching our video 😊✌ we have a bunch of local new Zealand videos. Hope it helps you if you're ever planning a visit here 😁
How does your city compare in terms of costs? Are you more expensive? Or Cheaper? We're really curious to find out :)
Haha Norway is crazy expensive!!! We spent $20 on a pint when we were there 😂😂
Costa Rica is very similar and we are far from being a developed country 😓
Claudia Aguilar
Where you recommend in Costa Rica to visit ?
I have always wanted to go to Costa Rica
Thanks
Watching this from my cramped NYC (Brooklyn) Apartment. Yea, I might actually save money moving to NZ lol.
Hahahaha dame here we are saving up to live in a cramped nyc apartment for a month 😂
💯 with this comment 😊👌 you've summed it up well. When you travel around the world you quickly realise how special our home is.
New Zealand is a truly great country
@@dahalofreeek as an American I’m curious as to why you feel that way
@@dahalofreeek be grateful, im from Malaysia and trust me were like 80 times worse than you lot
@@GarciaCapital Probably because their country ranks as one of the highest on the World Happiness Index.
Your introduction covers a comprehensive range of accommodation and food. It is simple and clear. Thank you for sharing.
Mum why is your English so good these days 😂❤
Generally I thought London is much more expensive in terms of housing than Auckland and Sydney?
You're right London is still more expensive for housing. However it is considerably cheaper for everything else.
I still ask, why tf are everything do expensive? Answers for myself was that the government has all resources for advertising none for the accommodation of these people that were meant to be happy to be here 🙄
15 years ago Auckland was still one of the worst around for house prices relative to income.
Even though this was filmed two years ago, it still holds value today. Thank you for the comprehensive content! This is exactly what I needed
Thanks Jess thank you for watching 😁✌
I grow up in New Zealand Wellington and then moved to London and all I can say is that renting an apartment is expensive but everything else in London is cheaper, food and transport but new Zealand its way too expensive for everything. I'm glad I moved to London. 😊
Hello claire thanks for the insights from London 😊👋 will need to take the trip over one day and see what it's like over there.
@@PeterandYen It's a shithole, don't waste time with london.
@Crypto Hunter it's a shithole for anyone who doesn't earn at least 4k a month. And even if you do earn that much it still very unsafe city, even in most expensive areas there is gangs, killings and so on, media just doesn't report any. I know because I work in security in the most expensive area.
@Crypto Hunter £4k, I never been in south africa so I can't comment on that. I only speak from personal experience.
Crypto Hunter it’s a shithole for people who aren’t white because it’s racist as hell
Love this video ... Im in Melbourne and my mum is always telling people that the cost of living in NZ is very high compared to here. Now I can tell people to check this vid out since you elaborate more on it. 👍💛
Hello CaityB thank you glad you found the video informative. Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by and dropping a comment 😁👋
This is the most informative video ive watched about nz! Thanks alot
No worries thanks for watching and leaving a comment 😁👍
I lived in the south west of the UK for 3 years and I always thought the UK is the most expensive until I visited New Zealand. I stayed in Auckland for a few months and God I was shocked! Everything is so expensive and sometimes even more than the UK. At least in the UK you can get cheaper food and a few other things if you check carefully. But I don't regret my visit to NZ, it was the most rewarding trip ever. NZ is so beautiful, unique in its own way, rich and vibrant.
Thanks for the message Jeena your post is exactly what this video is trying to say 😁 beautiful but a lil pricey
I love the examples ! Very cool I didn’t know a 1 bedroom was so freaking cheap!!!!!! Tokyo sucks!!!!!
Thanks for the perspective Sundai! I guess compared to cities like Tokyo and nyc Auckland would be considered cheap. But when we consider to other countries in Asia it's pretty expensive 😅
He says like 400-600$ a week though! It's about 900 a month where I am
i live in japan and find new zealand to be far more expensive. unless you have a well paying job you will likely have to live with other people.
I though south Africa was bad but wow 600 gets you a good spacious 2 bedroom
2400 a month is not cheap dude
I live in Auckland, but in a few years I will be moving out and I found this information to be very useful when planning my future. Cheers mate!
Thank you! Made this video with the intention of it being useful for people who want to visit Auckland but glad it's helpful for locals too. Cheers for watching and dropping a comment 😁👋
by far the best breakdown
If you want tap water that taste like it came from a swimming pool you should visit Australia everyone drinks bottled water here
ilRegulator You can’t taste the caesium ,strontium if it happens to be in your N.Hemisphere water though.God Bless.
Thanks for creating this video! 👏🏻
No worries hope you found it useful 😁🤙
We also have the best weather in the country, so we pay for that too😰
Ideally, for renters (like us), you rent from a family owned apartment.
Great video. Simple, clear, straightforward yet very informative. Thank you!
Thank for your videos! Its very informative for me making a decision to move and work there!
"Make me feel broke just talking about it"
Man i miss my home country lol
Hahahaha yeah New Zealand will always be home to us no matter how broke we get from high petrol just gonna have to walk 😂🤔 😅
Oh man 3000$ per month is amazing. In Amsterdam or any other big city in the Netherlands here you rent a little room for 1000€ = (about: 1800$) per month. Then you have 1 small bedroom and a shared kitchen and shower.
New Zealand sounds like a dream
i live in australia and i have been thinking of moving to new zealand and starting my own family.
Thank you for this video, really so helpful in helping me budget and plan my working holiday!
Hello this video is from almost 5 years ago so just need to note a few things are more expensive now
Aotearoa & Hawai'i are comparable in regards to the cost of living.
NZ is ❤️
Thanks for this very wonderful video mate🙏
all of my questions were answered, especially the apartment cost and weekly grocery.
No worries glad this was useful for you 😁🤙
Peter you have given good information but still will be looking ahead with Newzealand
But there are also things that are much cheaper in NZ. E.g. Car Insurance, Health Insurance, Medicine
Coming from American suburbs, these housing prices are amazing!
This is per week not per month. So its definitely expensive compared to everyplace in america I've lived
Well, thanks for your video, it was super interesting. I'm Italian and living in NZ is my dream, but it seems pretty hard, 'cause living is really expensive down there. I just hope job pays very well. Thank you by the way
Thank you for dropping a comment. Minimum wage in New Zealand is fairly high and skilled roles pay even better to make up for the cost of living.
@@PeterandYen yeah would be awesome! I'll let you know when I'm in NZ.
Sweet bro sounds good!
Here in Perth Australia you can rent a house about 20 kilometres from the city for around $200-$350 per week.
Fuel here is around $1.30 per litre AUD.
Woah that's a pretty sweet deal. Perth is a nice state too 👍
I live in the Bay Area, California. Cost is off the roof, but I don't have one so it's all good!
Thanks for the suggestion and you're right prices are crazy right now
I live in southern california and this actually doesn't seem too bad. I think it's actually cheaper in NZ. At least the rent I think. Had a friend move their 10 years ago and he loves it. Looks amazing!
Great video! Thanks for sharing.

‘Very’ expensive is an understatement for Auckland home.
Living is Paris is more expensive than NZ ?
Peter and Yen haha the pay is not going anywhere if anything deductions are increasing 😂
The editorial level is getting better and better, and I hope to see more wonderful content. Good job :)
Thank you for the feedback and glad you enjoyed this review of living costs in NZ hope you found it useful 👍
It's great video!! Thanks for sharing!
No worries thanks for watching 😊👍
Great video guys, I found this video so informative! 👍🏻 It was also very helpful to see the graphs/diagrams you made to break down the cost of living in Auckland. ✔️ Your piano playing is amazing Peter, you should include more of it on the channel! 😃🎵
Hahahaha Chelsea sorry to disappoint but I was literally button bashing while the auto player was going 😂 glad you enjoyed the video though we have been really enjoying reading comments from around the world as people compare their cities to Auckland 😊🖖
Super informative 👌thank you so much 💓
Great video Peter, really informative and useful. It's always been a dream of ours to visit and possibly live in NZ in the future for a while.
Hello hello Aaron and Wera glad you found this useful, hopefully if you do come to NZ it will help with all the budgeting 👍 don't let the expenses put you off NZ is amazing 😊🌱
Last time I was in NZ it was dirt cheap, such a shock to see how prices have risen just like Sydney did a while back
Yeah 😅 over the last few years prices have really shot up here
If your ever in central city, be sure to visit Elliot stables!

Yes it was v helpful, plz make a video for immigrants how they can survive, jobs, lifestyle and future prospect
amazing video! so informative
Fuel in NZ isn't too bad.
In the Czech Republic it's about the same cost, but minimum wage is about $4.70 NZ...
A 1 hour bus ticket is $1NZ
An all day underground ticket in Prague is $7.40NZ
A first class train ticket from Auckland to Hamilton would be about $10.
I get a half litre of beer at the pub for between $1.70 and $2
Rent a modern 2 bedroom apartment for $156NZ a week including power, water and heating.
Get a meal at a local restaurant for $10NZ including a beer.
Really interesting learning about the different costs of living from around the world! Thanks for sharing details about the Czech Republic 👍
wow that was a great content well I am not in a wish to move to NZ but as a Food Vlogger will visit someday over there and with your video I have an idea what would it cost me for 2 weeks roughly....Thanks for that
Hey mate thanks for the feedback! Yes as a foodie this is a great destination lots of variety and ingredients are super fresh 😉👌 hope you found the video useful for your budgeting 👍
Accurate information. I wish I had your video before I moved to Tauranga from USA.
Thank you glad you agree with the information ✌😊
It ain’t terrible pricing. New Zealand especially Auckland is probably the nicest place I’ve been.
Amazing locations here man would be perfect for your music videos 😊👍 would also be so cool to meet you in person I think we would have a lot do catch up on 👊😁
@@PeterandYen word bro, word! Yeah for sure I'm down my man
That’s like $5.30 USD per gallon
US is blessed with good prices. In portugal 1L of gasoline is 1.5€ roughly. 1gallon = 3.8L that's 5.7€ per gallon. In USD... 6.9$... And the average monthly salary is about 800€.
Fantastic upload...New-Zealand is costly in term of living....but one can enjoy the infusstructure there........good to meet u
Hey mate yeah New Zealand is definitely a bit costly to live in. But you are absolutely right there are a lot of positives living here. Beautiful nature, stable government nice infrastructure. It is a great country 😊👍
That was interesting to see how it compares to other place around the world
Hey bro yeah the comments section has been super insightful to read as well.
Hope to see you both in New Zealand one day 😊👌
Looks like you guys have a great view from your place!
Yes it was an awesome apartment but now we've actually made a few changes to our living arrangements this year as we are planning something big 😁😎
Peter and Yen Ohhh exciting! Can’t wait to hear about whatever that something is 🔥🔥
Great video! Although, it would be nice if you make a video about how much income you can have. Love from Greece!
@@PeterandYen thank you very much :)
Woahhhh that is insanely expensive I'm in shock. How does anyone afford a place in L.A.???? Makes New Zealand seem super affordable 😥👌
Honestly, it IS truly insane 😶 watching your video, it looks like New Zealand is a pretty awesome place to move to 😊
Fantastic info and video Peter, lovely edit too
Thanks Senja 😊👌 New Zealand is a beautiful country but you just need to be careful of the costs of things before coming to make sure budgets are ok 👍
Thanks!
Hi sure thing, you can either ask us on here or we're also on IG and Facebook if you'd like to message us on either of those platforms with your questions 🙂 We'll do our best to help answer 👍
thanks a lot Mr. Peter your video has given me a lot of info.
Hi Hassam thank you so much for watching 😁👍 hope you get a chance to visit New Zealand 🌿🇳🇿 appreciate you leaving a comment ✌
thanks for your reply I'm trying to get there. I like your video and it helped me a lot to know about NZ, will come and enjoy. I appreciate your effort to give info.
Hey, that is a lot of detailed information. Obviously going to help me when I visit New Zealand. Thanks. ☺️
Yooo awesome to hear 😉👌 this video is for everyone thinking about travelling to New Zealand hopefully it will actually help with your budgeting 🖖 don't forget to give us a shout when you're here 👍
For sure mate. Thanks!
If you check trademe a lot of that wage info is on there 👍
Thanks for the video!
I can use this video as a reference to decide to live in CBD or slightly outside CBD as I am about to move up to Auckland :)
All the best mate 😁👍
Petrol is actually ridiculous right now... especially since pretty much everyone drives as well 😥
I lived in Perth for a bit. The cheaper rentals were $400 a week. Cost $50 a week to get into town for work on public transport. $10 for a basic pint of cider at a cafe... Just off the top of my head. I'd say supermarket prices weren't too different from NZ.
nice to see your becoming way more relaxed in your videos (natural) keep it up homie :)
Hey bro yeah they gradually get more and more natural. Still not fully letting out all the personality yet but it'll get there. Cheers for checking these videos out man! 👊
Really appreciate this! I guess the higher living wage, especially compared to the UK would balance out the general expense of living costs.
Minimum wage is quite high, however salaries and wages on the whole are extremely low when compared to the cost of living, It does not balance out, you're welcome.
also for uk citizens, eurozone citizens and us citizens it is roughly 2 NZD to the USD, GBP, EUR
cool vlog! very informative vlog, keep up the good work!
Thanks for checking this one out bro. Hope you get a chance to come to Auckland New Zealand one day 😉👌
Great video mate!!! Very informative thanks a lot
