    I live where forest fires happen frequently. People living on farms, ranches and in small towns are finally learning to clear away any dead trees, bushes, especially long grass, pines away from buildings.
    Your home is stone exterior, so it won't burn, but please limit the amount of wood you use especially around yourselves and the animals.
    If flames come near spray toward the top of the flames, then underneath them. Fires grow from drawing in oxygen and flames climb with it.
    It will be smart to have an area where you can hide away from fires, maybe big enough for the rest. I suggest you try to remove the oldest trees from the lower slopes, fires climb uphill.
    Too close for even my comfort, and yes, 1 km is about 5 minutes away if a breeze comes with the fires.
    Glad you are all safe. 🇨🇦❤️

      A metal roof on your house, over animals will help. Plastics are like jet fuels for forest fires so they need to either be protected or stored somewhere away from you.

    The older gentleman in the video nailed it and as you also say, you need a vibrant, living system of custodians using goats, sheep etc to minimize fire risk. More and more young people are seeking alternatives to busting your ass in the city, eating better, more nutrient rich food, having nature on your doorstep and with online working making this possible, let’s hope we can look after land better. I have a small plot near Valencia, not affected by the recent fires, but I’m acutely aware of the work needed to make my land less fire prone, it’s surrounded by pines…my priority is soil building, I chop and drop like a fiend, soils that hold more moisture are less at risk. Maybe town halls should buy chippers and loan them out in the community as a fire prevention technique… mucha suerte a los dos 🍀🍀🍀

    • @abbypulham-yates9650
      @abbypulham-yates9650 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great idea. Not everyone can afford a decently chipper. I would love to do more but the size of chipper I can afford can only handle twigs. Another idea to take to our ayuntamientos.

      I live in the south of Spain and for the last 5 or more years the Junta de Andalucía have been giving subsidies to farmers to rip up all the mountains and terrace them to plant mangoes . It's really sad seeing that we literally have no water , my local town buys in two water tankers every couple of days . I wish they would think more for the future of their land rather then the economic benefits , I'm planing on putting together something to show to the local ayuntamiento regarding permaculture, every drop of rain that falls around here just ends up in the river and out to the sea , there are no water harvesting structures , everyone and their dog has a borehole and on top of that they spray their land with pesticides and so on , im hoping I won't have to move away but at this rate in 10 years I'll be living in a desert 🏜️ .
      It's so hard to find any Spanish permaculture videos or courser to show the ayuntamiento where I live , but realistically it's the only hope we have of saving the place I grew up in ....

    • @monicacruz4407
      @monicacruz4407 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keyrides6157 I think ayuntamientos respond better to the idea of regenerative agriculture, agro forestry etc rather than using the word permaculture which they associate with hippy culture (ayuntamientos are deeply conservative). Try talking to locals, there may be others that can get behind your cause, otherwise it can be monumentally disheartening. There are many TH-cam videos about various schemes in Spain, anti-desertification projects, winemakers going regenerative, even towns getting with the programme, if you use the Spanish search terms ‘agricultura regenerativa’, ‘agroforesteria’ etc. I know that Groasis did a massive reforestation project in southern Spain somewhere. Universities are doing the research, talk to young people, many are committed to changing things for the better. It’s the older generation that are more resistant to change. ‘No dig’ or ‘no till’ farming is still a hard sell here, but I’m doing it small scale and it works with a bit of broadforking to loosen the clay. Good luck to you 🤞🤞🤞🍀💪💪💪

    I really liked the Spanish. Many years ago I lived in Mexico for a year as a exchange student. It was lovely to hear the language again and to be able to understand it. Thank you.
    In Australia, hot dry weather and fires are a constant problem during summer. It is tiring, exhausting and scary when they hit your corner of the world. I completely understand your feelings and thoughts in regard to this experience. Fire and nature are powerful forces we must never under estimate. It was amazing how quicky trees resprouted following severe fires we had several years ago. Nature was certainly far more resilient than I felt at the time. I recently travelled through another part of Australia where the fires had been very intense, sadly there are patches of bush land that have not re sprouted. Let us be thankful for every day and every moment we have to breathe and enjoy nature.🦋

You are so right about making rural areas a living countryside, and you are making a real difference. Also essential is an earthshaking change in policy from governments all over the globe creating tax incentives for rural repopulation and reversing climate change.

    Do you have a volunteer fire brigade in the nearby town? They are an excellent way to both learn about fire and to help the community respond to the threat. Having more people in the countryside doesn't fix the problem on it's own. We have a lot of people who move out into the bush and want to keep the atmosphere of having the trees up close to their homes, as a result their homes cannot be saved when a fire comes through. People and proper land management practices are the key, and there is still debate about the latter. Best of luck!

    Oh no, I'm so sorry. I've been watching all your videos back from the beginning since I found you several days back. I live in Australia and I've seen that glow a few too many times including having to drive through a fire once to safety. Our 2019-2020 season was the worst, no one knows how much land burnt, somewhere between 2 and 10 million hectares.
    I completely agree that it's the people who live in these places need to be actively encouraged to participate. We have that somewhat here with Australian First Nation tribes doing burn offs in the traditional way they have done for 10s of millenia, but it's going to need so much more. Governments need to do their best to get out of the way of the local people and allow the ways that worked before to work again, alongside research and monitoring. Because things are going to get worse.
    I bet next summer your strimming is going to be a bit OCD! Maybe also look into bushfire defences in other parts of the world. And when you rebuild the ruin, consider building sprinklers into the roof. It's required in many parts of rural Aus. I'm just so glad your land was safe.

      Ahh gosh I can't even fathom the scale of a fire that burns millions of hectares. That's like.... an entire small country. 😭😭😭

    • @ithulah
      @ithulah ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LittleSpanishFarmstead The fires burnt for months over vast areas, some of them they just had to let them go, the areas were too inaccessible to gain access. Koalas are already endangered, the number killed in the fires (many of which were started by lightning in tinder dry forest and grass like with your fire) were a significant hit to their population. 😭 *Any* place that gets dry with summer electrical storms is going to be in progressively more danger. Hope your harvesting continues well!

    At my parents home on a hillside a minute from a major street in Whittier California there has been a problem at the junction of the base where the hillside naturally started. It is my opinion that the road that was cut out of the natural hillside is lifting up up, it was nearly flat in the 60s put now the incline is clearly at a higher angle, the water main to the subdivision breaks every so often,. Some people with swimming pools have pumps to water in case of a fire

    I guess you can do a fair bit of making sure there's a gap in bush growth between you & land next to you to create fire breaks maybe.
    I think if I lived somewhere like you do I'd be keeping bush growth minimal & ground cover very controlled at my land borders & tightly regulated immediately around the house.
    I'm very glad the fire didn't get closer to you.

    • @LittleSpanishFarmstead
      @LittleSpanishFarmstead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, agreed. Although the recommended firebreak is is 4m and we saw this fire jumped across 4m wide roads so it'd have to be... I don't know... pretty wide. We keep our land clear for this reason but if the neighbouring property is abandoned it's a problem :(

    En Australia los aborigenes evitan incendios poniendo barrera entre estos manteniendo un círculo sin hierba...Solo con arena o tierra...Es una buena idea...Tener un círculo lo más amplio posible alreadedor de vuestra finca sin nada que pueda prenderse...Saludos...
