In these times of my life where I find myself hopeless and psychologically tired his music bright my days so much. I send a big hug and a thank you to the sky wherever his soul rest...
Well, this is one of my favorites and I've never heard this version, so stunningly beautiful, I always wanted this song to last just a little bit longer and there it is, one more time around. Heartbreaking. Rest easy David.
This song, especially in this version, creates (for me) this type of vibes that some of Lou Reed’s songs had in the seventies. Very sensible, dark, poetic, but in love with beauty. Something deep inside that might have told him (them) that despite of all the pain, there is something deeply poetic in life to admire.
A single day doesn’t not go by that I do. It listen to something David wrote or sang. Truly a legend during and before our time. I wish I would’ve paid more attention during the peak years.
this is great man. i really just know the finished recordings of theirs except for a few live versions on here, this is a new one to me and i think it's great. he's so fuckin cool. all my favorite singers couldn't sing.
["I took] every drug in every way from 15 on. I smoked love boat [PCP] every day my sophomore year of college. At the end it was down to crack, vodka, and binges of I.V. Dilaudid and cocaine. All backrounded by heaps of nerve-soothing pills." - David Berman in an interview with Pitchfork
Sounds like it may be Peyton Pinkerton on guitar, he went out on most of the shows when David finally kicked fears ass & gave us what we begged for! I've heard he was more surprised about the crowds around the world and especially in Isreal singing the words he wrote back to him, I heard that could've kept him going during so many dark periods in his life. It's also as if Purple Mountains is a goodbye to us, as sad as it is to have lost another tortured soul that good bye he got perfect. Jay Reatard's last album feels the same, for the 1st & sadly last ,time, he slowed things down & pulled the vocals to the front of the mix..
Scotch and penicillin is the breakfast of past champions. Today's champions prefer penicillin and scotch. It's a short life but a merry one down at the Yard.
@@johnzale7748 I'm the same way. I write myself, so my brain is on a different yet very similar level. It probably is just a few words he thought sounded cool in whatever drug haze he was hanging out in at the time (heavy user of most substances when this song was penned.) I also read somewhere or another that this was the first tune ever written by DCB. Great first effort.

We miss you. And we remember you
Indeed we do.... Indeed we do

If you started drinking at 18, 50,000 beers by 27 would be 15 beers a day

Magic and wonderful
Every time I listen to his music I wish I met him because of Silver Jews and not because of Purple Mountains…

It a lovely version. Thank you. I wonder when it was recorded ? with whom on the studio? יהי זכרך ברוך דויד ברמן. ברוך דיין אמת
It was on the radio. WFMU is a NYC/New Jersey area radio station.

Never got this line. Any clue?
@@briansmith9455 No idea. I just let the words wash over and pick the ones that sound fun. Smooth-brain Silver Jews fan here.

@@briansmith9455 I’m really shocked by this live version. It’s so soft. It could be a totally different song
