Professor, I have been trying to find the video of this unit where I think it was said, something like it can't be combined with another unit to produce a 50 AMP connection, are you aware of any such thing?
That's about as plug and play as you can get! Bad azz is right! The future is bright in the solar universe! Enjoyed the review as usual! Now, let me go count my shilings!!
The future those "solar roadways" con artists promised is arriving! Just not in the way they anticipated (and with the panels on roofs, in gardens or on balconies, you know, places where the sun might actually reach them)
I think I would have to be living off-grid full-time for this to make sense financially, but I am very impressed with the technology overall. It's stunning to me to think that, over just the past 10 years, it's now technologically feasible to have a complete solar-powered dwelling off-grid with a unit like this. Nice video if only to learn where this technology is going and how far it has come.
I'm using the Lycan 5000 to power and run a radio astronomy project using two, 3-meter satellite dishes configured as an interferometer and the low noise amplifiers (LNA) and band pass filters (BPF), the lycan does not cause any issues or radio frequency interference (RFI), that distrupts H1 hydrogen observations at 1420 MHz or 21 Centimeter wavelength.
Great product, awesome review. To me the $5,199 base price before discounts is a fair price. FREE SHIPPING so with that factored in, it’s a great price in my opinion. B$4,575 with discount.
I absolutely loved your review!!! Please keep up the fantastic work! I've had my Lycan for 6 months and this is the most detailed video I've seen that tells me what this monster power box is capable of! If only I could figure out how to get the DC Home app to recognize five Smarth Lithium Iron Phophate batteries... Great job!!
@@M_White_VA He's either joking or saying that the "UK" version of this product outputs 240 volts... but he forgets they use 50 hz, so unless there's a way to program the cycles per sec on the UK version to 60hz... it would be useless here in the USA
The bar that is attached to the ground screw is probably for shipping purposes only. Renegy’s video shows removing the bar and attaching a ground wire that is not included. Due to the fact that it is painted steel and not copper, it probably is inappropriate to use as a grounding bar.
This is my first time watching your channel after seeing this video recommendation (perhaps this is proof that the YT algorithm doesn't ALWAYS suck). I watched this to the end and subscribed. Excellent video, thorough and well done. I'm looking forward to your other content.
The 80A is PV charge current. The inverter charges the batteries at 54V x 80A = 4,320W. The inverter can additionally charge the batteries at 40A at 54V from AC power for a total of 120A at 54V.
I agree with the use of amps and not watts. Amps are used in full solar systems and watts are used in portable. IMHO this fits in the full solar system category.
I bought the original Lycan, and after trying 2 units, got rid of it because it wouldn't stay on. It was a "feature" to conserve battery charge, as best as I can figure. Not a good feature when its job was to power my fridge. It's why I ended up building my own set up from components. Haven't had a problem since.
All of these solar gens for RV’s are great! But would anyone really feel comfortable leaving them outside, with your RV plugged into it, and trust that no one will walk away with it? I know I’m not comfortable doing that, that’s why I wired a female outlet outside, ran it into my dinette seat, with a male plug out. I keep my solar gen inside my RV, plug my 30 amp cord into the side of my RV, it stays nice and safe!
going for DIY instead, I have some Renogy products already I've also connected a DC 7909 Y splitter to my Bluetti/PowerOak so I can charge it from solar during the day and AC after sunset
A movie reference to Army of Darkness!!! Wow! Some great humor in this review. I am pretty sure the UPS or FedEx guy is going to break every future package after delivering this to show his love for me breaking his back getting this thing to the front door. Interesting product though and reasonable price for all the equipment in a waterproof stove box...oh...sorry...solar generator box.
Well that means I could probably put that on top of a cabinet the cabinet full of batteries and use as a powerhouse giving it more batteries for a longer capacity. And if we can give up 3600 w continuously I could hook it up to my kitchen stove if I could change it to 240 volts.

Well you have done it again, almost talking me into wanting one of these ! With the country going to shit this might just be a life saving device. Worth every penny ! Thanks for the great review, again.
Honestly, a very cool and well thought out box and can see it working well in a variety of applications. With the 48V setup it would be really nice if it had inputs for an auxiliary alternator… with 125-150A alternator it could charge up that battery in under an hour making this box even more versatile in something like a van build. 12v outputs would also be really nice. Overall super cool though and at a great price point. The waterproof aspect is a huge plus!
Could this be manipulated to work with alternator charging? I’m trying to decide whether to pick on up on sale for my campervan build bc I can get it at a good price
Another great video Professor. I have no use or interest in the Lycan (Werewolf?) but I am looking at that Renogy 3500W Pure Sine Wave Inverter Charger for my future cabin server battery system. You conveniently answered questions I had and has cemented my purchasing decision. Thank You Sir!
So with the 20 and 30 amp breakers does that mean I could run a 50amp service off of this without problems? So 20amp for a fridge 15amp furnace (no ac) 15amp for lights and that's about it unless you alternate appliances? I like that unit but I'm used to industrial/commercial type equipment so it's looks don't bother me. I think it's great they come out with this unit. It should mean whole house units will be right around the corner if not already here.
Loved your analysis. Ordered one. Pounded in a grounding rod and ran 12 ga copper on inside to the Lycan’s spot. This is also chosen to be at an outlet connected a 20a breaker. I’ve labeled all our breakers super accurately, which are roughly 80% supplied by 20 amp breakers (about 20% are under 15s). Built a temp ramp to get the Lycan 5000 up upon a strong pallet based platform that looks good, robust, & perfectly sized. It arrived safely and everything powered on in the right order. All Indicators light up as expected. Spirits are high. Time to charge it on house power. Grab plug. Insert in Lycan bring other cord end over to our 20a supplied outlet. What? The plug on the house side is the weirdest configuration I’ve ever seen. BIG sinking disappointment. If I need a specially configured non-standard outlet installed, why is this NEVER mentioned? I would have ponied up for an electrician far in advance, yet this was never brought this up. Big let down. Consider the expense of a qualified electrician if you just simply want to start out charging by house power before configuring solar later. Big omission in the analysis !! Others will feel the let down, especially if they were trying so hard to set up everything in advance for the unit’s arrival. Had to power off the unit, make an appointment, and wait patiently. It’s a handsome box - so much potential - no illuminated lights for now: it rests in quiet slumber. Just a lack of notification of a simple issue unexpected issue that’ll only shut things down temporarily. Some of you will appreciate knowing about this in advance.
@@HOBOTECH Learned more on the subject that may help on the LYCAN plug configuration surprise issue for the non-electricians out there like me. I confirmed that my outlet IS a 20 amp circuit by flipping the breaker to test. It’s actually THE closest outlet to the main house breaker panel. So that’s a very short wire run - about the length of a hockey stick. Apparently typical household 20 amp breaker circuits often just carry the usual series of the typical 15 amp wall outlets we’re all familiar with. But the wiring here at my solar gens parking spot is set to handle up to 20 amp; however it’s cheaper just to throw in mostly 15amp wall sockets so that’s what we often get and don’t question. (Of course other circuits dedicated to mostly lighting DO get serviced by only 15 amp breakers). Exceptions would be circuits for main fridges and large microwave plugs or GFCI bathroom and kitchen outlets that are GFCI and needing the obligatory 20amps. And of course we know what items typically use the 30amp breakers. After shutting off the targeted 20 amp breaker I carefully replaced the existing cheaper 15amp “style” outlet with a solid 20 amp outlet that has the plug orientation matching the LYCAN’s provided household charging cable. Outlet was less than $4 at an electrical supply store. After the re-wire the Lycan could be powered up. Based on my results, as long as it is a 20amp circuit, there should be no complicating issues of this swap. Great video. I went and purchased the Lycan and the Renogy 500 battery monitor. I could swear i saw a video of how to connect these two, but for the life of me cannot find it any more. Would you happen to know how to connect these two components?
Big and impressive. That would be great for a tiny house, or cabin. Wouldn't have to move it much, because most ppl wouldn't be able to. Ten yr battery, wow. That is a phat deal with the discount. Honest review, with a lil humor, thanks. 🙂👍
If you put it outside and it rains, be aware that a failure point exists where raindrops splash up when they land. They will soak the filter and damp air will enter the unit, possibly shorting it out. So lean or put a board on it.
Awesome info as always - looking forward to the Solar panel and Renogy One integration video's! I wish the discount codes worked here in Canada....sigh
Hi! Im confused bout if you actually need over current protection from pannels to the lycan . I know it has over current built in for each solar array but am i correct to think thats only protecting the lycan and not the cable from panel to box? So we should have a fuze off last neg conductor to box? The manufacturer is giving me conflicting information. Thank. Love your vids
Would love to see a picture of Odin sprawled out on top of this futuristic wood stove lol, yeah professor hobo, I did spit my coffee out when you said the retail price... Holy paycheck Batman... Damn nice toy...
I am not sure if I understood you correctly. Did you say that this Lycan system can be used to lower electric bills and allow for power outage at the same time. It is confusing to me. Thank you for taking the time to answer if you see this.
Thanks for the thorough video. It's been very informative and the Lycan 5000 seems like the right setup for my specific needs. With that said, wouldn't the current of the 450 watt renogy panels in a 3s2p configuration be above the 20 amp max for solar input?
Have you done that video charging the lycan? I just got one today and I'm not sure how I will go as far as solar. I'm a newbie so lots of questions lol thanks for the video
You think it would work for a well pump and a septic pump there's a 20 amp breaker on each but it's set with a double pole in the breaker boxs the total startup on these two items around 1,000 each or just over the running water about half of that for both each
Killer Renogy deals going on now...15% off the Lycan. My 'kit' arrived yesterday and I'm pretty jazzed. Heads up though...the AC input cable requires a NEMA 5-20P outlet which I do not have. That'll be an add on for the electrician I'm required to use for the manual transfer switch installation. I got that through Renogy and it's a Reliance Pro/Tran2 model 306A.
Question.... and maybe i missed something, but i heard you say that the minimum input for solar was 60v, and that would take 3 12 V panels. In my world 3 times 12 is 36. What am i missing??
Thank you for that valuable piece of information. One would think if that is the important component VOC, it would be highlighted on ALL solar panels. However, i do not find that to be the case.@@HOBOTECH

What happens if you let it run the battery down to shut off voltage? Is there a Min percentage discharge for these batteries or do they protect themselves?
Hey Mr. Hobotech! I get dizzy watchin' this kind of stuff, so why don't you do an old man a favor & make a video for me. I'm about to retire, and am going to put up a couple of greenhouses. They're going to be about 30ft by 90 ft, & I'm going to dig down 6 to 8 feet & run pipe to warm them, along with a few other tricks for a burst of cold weather, so I don't need power for heat. What I do need is power for lights, & I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. We're pretty sunny in eastern NC, but I'll need to illuminate them for about four hours a day. I'd like to use basic bulb grow lights hung from a basic socket on a power cord type thing (provides unique flexibility). Figure I'll need around 125 of them per greenhouse. They run 12 watts a bulb. What's the most basic solar setup I'd need for that type of rig?
I see, in the app, there is some cell-level information. How is this information accessed by the controller? Is the battery itself supplying the data, or does it use balance leads, and the monitoring is done in the controller? Ultimately, can you build your own batteries, provided you have the proper (sensors/leads/bms/whatever), can the controller report that data?
I have a travel RV that is parked off grid. I am considering the Lycan. My Rv Has 50 amp service. Can the Lycan be upgraded to handle that or can I adapt my RV unit to 30 amp service. The unit is equipped with a 12 volt system for lights, motors and pumps. 2 100 watt panels and 2 batteries. Where can I go to find out more if you can't help. Thanks
HELP! Hi there. I just installed the lycan 5000 tiny house system. Everything worked great until i plugged in the 8 solar panels shipped with the kit. As soon as I flipped the breaker there was loud popping and then smoke came out from where the solar array breaker switch is located. Now it's just dead and batteries are solid red. What happened?
Funny because the Lycan isn't sold by Renogy with 8 panels. Let me guess you bought a "kit" from the rip off artist ShopSolarKits? If that's the case, you're on your own. Renogy probably won't cover the warranty from a 3rd party. Next time buy direct using my links and not a 3rd party joker.
@@HOBOTECH yeah, I would think if we plugged it in when we get home from work we could get our commute milage back. It's around 20 miles round trip. Would still have several hours of sun in the summer. Winter might be a little tougher

I was thinking of the Qcell quantum panels, as I can get them locally, but I think the voc is too high. Thanks

Big and impressive. That would be great for a tiny house, or cabin. Wouldn't have to move it much, because most ppl wouldn't be able to. Ten yr battery, wow. That is a phat deal with the discount. Honest review, with a lil humor, thanks. 🙂👍
I would really like to see someone do a below freezing temp discharge capacity and charge test.
I agree, and often wonder how well these solar generators work in Northern climates where it commonly gets well below zero during Winter.
Someone definatly looked at a stove and went yeh that will do nicely.
Prof. Hobo: "That's THIS many..." Me: [Spits out drink laughing]
Would love to see a picture of Odin sprawled out on top of this futuristic wood stove lol, yeah professor hobo, I did spit my coffee out when you said the retail price... Holy paycheck Batman... Damn nice toy...
This would’ve been a great video to test Renogy’s new 550 and 450 W solar panels. Because 7 foot residential panels now produce 450+ watts.
Just got to the end of the video I guess he will be reviewing those panels with this solar generator😂
I am not sure if I understood you correctly.
Did you say that this Lycan system can be used to lower electric bills and allow for power outage at the same time.
It is confusing to me.
Thank you for taking the time to answer if you see this.
Does this work at -40 degrees F outside air temp for long periods of time?
I'VE GOT CHILLS!
I'm confused. 60V-145V input for solar. How is 3 x 12V panels enough to engage changing? Is the minimum not 60V? Same for 2x24V panels.
You go by Voc of the panel as described in the video.
Can I use this unit to create my own micro grid and power solar panels and micro verters I already have.
Thanks for the thorough video. It's been very informative and the Lycan 5000 seems like the right setup for my specific needs. With that said, wouldn't the current of the 450 watt renogy panels in a 3s2p configuration be above the 20 amp max for solar input?
There are two 20A inputs.
@@HOBOTECH Thanks for the reply. It's a little nebulous in the manual.
Was Credits to Navy Beans" from Mr DeSalle in the Star Trek episode Catspaw?
Bingo!
Have you done that video charging the lycan? I just got one today and I'm not sure how I will go as far as solar. I'm a newbie so lots of questions lol thanks for the video
At what point does a so-gen become a so-powerplant?
Don't get over excited this will run a tumble dryer for 2 hours
You think it would work for a well pump and a septic pump there's a 20 amp breaker on each but it's set with a double pole in the breaker boxs the total startup on these two items around 1,000 each or just over the running water about half of that for both each
Your well pump and sump pump would have to be 120 VAC models to work with this.
There are videos on how to easily convert a well pump from 240v to 120v.
@@HOBOTECH could i use one of these in the house for critical loads and a separate DC only system for the well pump?
Killer Renogy deals going on now...15% off the Lycan. My 'kit' arrived yesterday and I'm pretty jazzed. Heads up though...the AC input cable requires a NEMA 5-20P outlet which I do not have. That'll be an add on for the electrician I'm required to use for the manual transfer switch installation. I got that through Renogy and it's a Reliance Pro/Tran2 model 306A.
This would be nice if you could get 220 volts for a total ooff grid house where you would need to run some AC’s
Does it come with the heater as well cuz it has stayed outside here in a freeze to death you get freezing weather and snow in the winter time.
Batteries are heated
Superior presentation, as always, sir.
How long would this run a 30 foot RV 15000 btu air conditioner on a hot day without solar or electric input?
Question.... and maybe i missed something, but i heard you say that the minimum input for solar was 60v, and that would take 3 12 V panels. In my world 3 times 12 is 36. What am i missing??
In the solar world you go by Voc or the max voltage the panel outputs
Thank you for that valuable piece of information. One would think if that is the important component VOC, it would be highlighted on ALL solar panels. However, i do not find that to be the case.@@HOBOTECH

What happens if you let it run the battery down to shut off voltage? Is there a Min percentage discharge for these batteries or do they protect themselves?
Yes
But would all that fan power suffice to cool things when it's 120 degrees in the shade in summer in southern Arizona?
Yes. It can handle up to 122F ambient.
Hey Mr.
No 240v (even in parallel) is just ridiculous for a product like this. I don't think they did their market research...
i agree. if it could run my well pump....
Agreed. I think they need a rev2.
The info is coming from the smart batteries, not the controller.
@@HOBOTECH Are the batteries reporting that data to the app, or is it passed to the controller, which then sends it to the app?
@@chrislewis6050 I did explain in the video how it works.
@@HOBOTECH Ah, through RJ45... Thanks.
Great info! I feel more informed.
Hi Mr HoboTech I bought a Renogy 7200 power bank what do you think was it a wise choice for small power needs?
When did Renogy start doing 48v stuff? I guess I haven't been paying attention!
Holy shit that thing is huge
Hello, I purchased Bluetti EB240. Can it be put into use while being charged by solar panels to extend the longevity of the load?
That thing is awesome. I wish it had 240v but this would be awesome for my off grid garage. How would this do to charge my EV?
It will charge any EV at Level 1
@@HOBOTECH yeah, I would think if we plugged it in when we get home from work we could get our commute milage back. It's around 20 miles round trip. Would still have several hours of sun in the summer. Winter might be a little tougher
Hi, I like your videos. I got a ? about the lycan can you use the blue tooth without inter net or phone service
It doesn't require Internet.
Can you step up the voltage with a recoil
If you could have this or the AC500 w/ dual batteries which would you select? Just trying to get you to piss off one of the companies (joking).
Come for the power station... stay for the Star Wars references.
Great video!
As heavy as this is; you won't have to worry about someone running down the street with it.
Best Investment Ever!
Is there a generator that can power my 240 volt well pump ? My fur babies have to have water if FJB shuts our power grid down.
hobotech.tv/large-home-backup-ups-240v-solar-generator-power-stations/
If your off grid or shtf situation I wouldn't want all the wifi/Bluetooth stuff. Is there a sogen without all that. Also could these possibly be hacked? Maybe a dumb question, but I'm asking anyway
Just turn it off ...
The app is useless and absolutely no support from Renogy. Just pretend it doesn't exist and you'll be fine.
Is that an oscillating fan or an angry robot speaker in the run down test? 🤣
Any chance you could see your soul to get a coupon code that would work on the Canadian Renogy site?
You would actually need 4 times Worlds Strongest Man Brian Shaw to carry that thing around
Pretty convincing video, but where is the link below?
CHECK IT OUT HERE: hobos.cc/lycan use code HOBOLYCAN1
For 450w solar panels hobos.cc/ren450 use code HOBOPANEL
For 175w solar panels hobos.cc/ren175 use code HOBOPANEL
Hey professor, do you know if the EU 220v delta Pro can be used here for 220 whole panel back-up?
Could you please let me know what solar panels would you recommend for maxing out the solar if I also purchased 2 additional 48 volt self heated smart renogy batteries? We use 6000 watts a day. I was thinking of the Qcell quantum panels, as I can get them locally, but I think the voc is too high. Thanks
I recommend the Renogy panels in the description or whatever is here hobotech.tv/amazon/#Solar-Kits
OK somebody needs to retrofit some sort of LCD screen into that door behind the glass with a raspberry pie or similar running a Yule log....
They should have made this one modular, in 2 or 3 parts... housing/inverter/charger, in 1 part, battery in 1 or 2 parts. That way you may not catch a hernia trying to move it.
I think the issue there is keeping it IP55 rated.
@@HOBOTECH I want one, but my back says it's not going to happen. Wish it was slimmer for wall mounting with batteries that could be installed after it was mounted!
They did, It's called a Delta Pro. The "weather proofing" is kinda gimmicky.
@@Bob_Adkins hobotech.tv/large-home-backup-ups-240v-solar-generator-power-stations/
Could you feed it through an auto transformer
I don't see why not.
The word lycan sounds so familiar. Definitely Sci fi something, possibly vampirish?
Yep it's a vampire. Maybe it's sucking the life out of the sun?
