First heard this song on Ken Burn's Civil War Series - Intrigued with this part of our history and the words and music of Ashokan Farewell just bring the feelings and reality of that war closer to home.....
Wow! I bet Ken Burns is kicking himself that he didn't have this arrangement also to add to his "Civil War" series. This version would have complemented certain portions so well!
@@ironmonger100 Isn't a guitar version of Ashokan Farewell included in the series? I remember something like it when Lee surrenders, it made the scene 100000x more somber
@@hunnicut5401 To my shame I've never seen the series but it was recently re-run on the BBC here in the UK so I plane to catch up over the holidays, I'm looking forward to it very much
I came here after purchasing your arrangement at your website after listening to Brandon Acker's performance of it. Thank you for the most beautiful solo version I've heard since the Ken Burns show aired.
I have heard 100 amazing guitarist attempt this tune without success. It is not a tune suited for guitar, until now! Your arrangement and execution is masterful. Great job and thank you.
Absolutely beautiful in all respects. The best guitar rendition of this beautiful tune EVER, and there are some fine ones out there. Thank you for sharing your superb playing.
Such a beautiful tune. I too fell in love with it back when the Civil War series was on TV. Shaun, your rendition is up there along with the Doc and the lady as the best I've heard.
Hi Shaun, I really enjoy your work. Each time I learn a new piece on the guitar and think that I have mastered it, I perform a "reality check". I hold my breath and watch as your mastery of the guitar, gently guides my ego back down to earth, but hey.. thanks for raising the bar. I can't speak for everyone, but you inspire me and I believe you make me a better player.
I have NEVER heard a more beautiful arrangement of this song for guitar (or any other instrument). Your hands just flow across the neck of the guitar like water. Thanks for such a beautiful video.
I am 75 years old and just took up the violin a year ago. Ashokan Farewell is one song i absolutely have to learn and am working on it now. Loved your guitar version. It was quite beautiful and very soothing.
Thanks for such a kind appraisal, I feel very humbled. It's such a great composition, that makes it easier for me and yes, I think I got lucky with the tone! Really appreciate you watching, thank you again 🙂
Without a single doubt, this is one of the prettiest version to an already beautiful tune. In fact, this version of yours, my friend, just upgraded this beautiful tune into a masterpiece. Please don't ever delete this video! It is a treasure for TH-cam guitarists
Thanks so much, it's a masterpiece of a composition and although it's a fiddle tune it works nicely for solo guitar I think. Really appreciate the kind comment
Lovely arrangement very well played. I ordered the tab online from Shaun and almost immediately received the file as well as a helpful section-by-section guide. Couldn't be more satisfied. Thanks Shaun!
Very nice! I've heard a number of arrangments of this tune. I like this one the best. Your performance of the arrangement is equally impressive, especially the work high up the neck. I don't know if it was flawless, but it sure sounded like it.
Like knophler's 'local hero, going home' theme tune, it is hard to believe that this tune has not been around for hundreds of years...beautifully arranged and played as always
I find this to be perfect when I slow down the tempo on the little gear. Very beautiful sound. My heart is happy. Jay Ungar describes the song as coming out of "a sense of loss and longing" after the annual Ashokan Music & Dance Camps ended. It is true. We hate to leave our fellow musicians.
Thanks for watching and commenting - yes the reason it was composed is very poignant and I relate to it very much. It's such a fine composition and I agree it offers a different perspective with a slower tempo. :-)
Great song beautifully played. When I hear it I think about one of my best friends, a highly decorated Vietnam Vet who flew 400 combat missions in a six month period. He passed away last year.
I have listened to a lot of renditions of this beautiful old song. These rates right up there as one of the best! My great, great grandfather died in the civil war, and I sometimes wonder if he ever heard the song.
I wouldn't have thought it possible for this song to be so beautiful, sans violin. But, Sir, you have done it. Spectacular and as evocative as any rendition. I will listen to this again and again. Thank you.
This tune sounds fine on violin but I had never, till just now, heard it played on a guitar. It touches deep feelings and is played so beautifully here. You are inspirational
I've just started to learn this piece with my guitar teacher and was looking for examples of the tune on youtube to assist me. Your rendition is right up there as one of the best I've seen. A beautiful tune, beautifully played. Very inspiring, thankyou.
+cvcoco Thanks so much - I had no idea when I posted this that it was such a popular tune, I'd never heard of it until our fiddle player brought it to us as a possible tune for the band. It's a beautiful composition and thanks again for such kind feedback.
+cvcoco That is such a generous appraisal thankyou, I'm happy you enjoyed what I did with this awesome tune. The strength is in the composition, it's beautiful.
@SlaveToTheDivas Allo mate ... it's a big tune in Country Music circles and our fiddler Phil does a cracking version. Was a pleasure to be involved last weekend and an immense pleasure to see you both. Thanks for making Terri so welcome. See you in July if not before.
Each time I play this it's like the first time I have heard it. I can't get enough.
thats a fantastic way of putting it I feel exactly the same
Awesome, such a haunting melody❤
This is by far the most beautiful rendition of Ashokan Farewell on guitar I've ever listened to. Thank you so much for sharing and BRAVO!
Much appreciated, thank you :-)
Agreed.
A masterful performance. This is a melody that grabs you by the heart and throat, and Shaun Murray gets full marks.
Bless you David, thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed it
This is the first time that I have heard Ashokan Farewell played on the guitar, it sounds beautiful, what an outstanding musician.
Thank you so much :-)

Great version of a beautiful song. The Ken Burns civil war documentary is now on UK netflix for those interested
Yes, they do use a solo guitar version in the film.

Thanks so much Dave, glad you enjoyed my version and thrilled that you've taken up the violin, bravo! Greetings from England.
One of the best renditions to ever grace this Earth. The dreamlike tone reminds me of the songs used in The Hobbit from the 70s.
Thanks for such a kind appraisal, I feel very humbled. It's such a great composition, that makes it easier for me and yes, I think I got lucky with the tone! Really appreciate you watching, thank you again 🙂
