I am a Bengali from Assamese and I miss the food as I live in Delhi. When she was enlisting the dishes, I was busy swimming in my own puddle of saliva, it was all so true. Laai Xaak (Vegetable Mustard) boiled with garlic, or Methi xaak (Fenugreek greens), or Dhekia (Vegetable fern) are my favourite leafies.
    Funny story:
I was in a cab with a few friends and we were talking about my life in Assam. I haven't had chicken for a long time- I am a student living in a PG- so I ask as to where can I find "Local" chicken. They reacted by exchanging blank stares at each other and asked me about it. Local chicken is way tastier than Broilers.

Just to be clear.. ahom is just a name of a Tai tribe in Assam. Assamese culture is not only about ahom. Their is more than 40 tribes in there living before than the arrival of ahom.
For example- bihu, this origin of this word is from my mother language which is Bisu.

Bengalis were are and always will remain immigrants in the North-East region. There was not a single Bengali in this region before colonialism in 1826(when NE became a part of India). Assam is for the indigenous people of Assam like Bodo, Mising, Keot(Kaibarta), Tiwa(Lalung), Rabha, Deori, Kalita, Ahom, Moran, Koch-Rajbongshi, Dimasa, Karbi etc who have been living in this region before colonialism in 1826 who are mostly either Austric or Mongoloid in origin not for immigrants like Bengalis(both Hindu and Muslim), Biharis, Marwaris etc who are Aryan-Dravidian mix. Tripura has already been overtaken by immigrant Bengalis from Bangladesh and the indigenous Tripuri people have become a minority in their homeland. The Barak Valley was actually the home of the Dimasas and other indigenous ethnic groups which has now been overtaken by immigrant Bengalis. The traditional dress, traditional food, culture, traditions, customs etc of the indigenous Assamese people are completely similar to South-East Asia and are completely different from mainland Indians. The Assamese language is itself a fusion of Non-Aryan Austric, Tibeto-Burmese, Tai, Indo-Chinese languages and Aryan languages. The Assamese language has more than 50% of the words from Non-Aryan Austric, Tibeto-Burmese, Tai and Indo-Chinese languages.
