I had my first Driver fitting 3 weeks ago, purchased the new Sim driver with the recommended shaft and have honestly never hit my driver so pure and consistent. Thanks for the great channel Matt. My game have definitely improved since subscribing. Be blessed.
I was fitted early January for the first time (I am a middle aged mid handicapper previously with 20 year old Wilson Deep Red irons, fairway woods and Taylor Made R7 driver). Having my interest rekindled by a friend taking golf up and you (and your friends) videos, I bit the bullet and bought the Cobra Speedzone one length irons, fairway woods and driver. I’m still waiting for the irons to arrive but must comment on the enjoyment of the fit and how much I learned about my game. Here’s hoping they arrive as lockdown breaks! Thanks for the fantastic content Matt, keep the videos coming!
Interestingly you mentioned "it won't magically fix your slice".... it DID fix mine. I went from hitting 180 yard carries with HUGE left to right slices (at least 30-50 yards fairly regularly) to smashing 218 yard dead straight drives with my new fitted driver. Had a fantastic time trying different heads, different shaft stiffnesses and lengths from different manufacturers and settled on a Callaway Paradym X with a Hazardous Silver 50g regular flex shaft at standard length (even though I'm 5 foot 6 and static measures would've pared me with a shorter shaft that I just couldn't get to grips with). I can now FEEL where the club head is during the swing and when I've messed up making it easier to correct it, where I couldn't feel anything much from my old club. It's definately made a huge difference for me. One thing I will say to anyone reading this and thinking about going for it... get fitted properly, be open minded about it (they can see things that you can't)... and sometimes what you want going in may not be the club you want to leave with by the end, don't be afraid to try out other heads than the one you want and try to just enjoy the process... relax, golf is FUN!
Hey Matt, been a viewer of your channel for quite a while. You were the first golf youtuber i watched. Your videos have evolved so much in a short period of time. Love your work, youre doing an amazing job, the more videos the better! Cheers 🍻
As a mid-handicap (15) I found fitting when I was looking for new irons to be really beneficial. I was playing off at about a 20 when I went in to get fit and was really struggling with GIR. Did my fitting with the pro at my club and the process took about an hour with about 20 of that just rotating through hitting 7-irons with multiple sets until narrowing it down to the P790's and AP3's and finally settling on the P790's. From there we spent about half an hour going through different shafts and lie adjustents until finding the combination that really seemed to work for me. It was a great experience and has played a huge part in dropping my handicap down about 5 strokes in one season. There was no extra charge to do a custom fitting with the club pro which made it an absolute no brainer, but even if there had been it still would have been worth it. Going in for a driver fitting at the start of this season and I'm really looking forward to it.
Matt, Around the 6 minute mark you start to discuss gapping. I always had an issue with gapping until I stopped using "specialty" wedges and just use the set wedges(Ping i25). I too went PW - 52 - 58 however since switching to just using set wedges(Ping i25) I go from 4-P, U, S, L. All gaps are filled by the set. Now I did have all irons/wedges fit for me with loft/lie as well as bumped up to X flex. The gapping issue is completely gone.
Great videos. I'm just coming back to playing and I felt when I first started playing years ago I didn't have the confidence to get a fitting. So I got a fitting and yes the guy had a chuckle as I hadn't swung a club in 5 years. But I found what felt right I was using the wrong flex shaft all them years ago
The biggest positive of a fitting, at least for me, is newfound confidence. Everything I do is heavily confidence based. If I don't feel good about it, then chances are it'll get to my head and I will do poorly. When I got custom fit for my irons for the first time, it actually had a tangible difference to my game, both mentally and on the scorecard.
I got fitted, but at 6ft 5, felt i needed it. Plus i hadn’t changed my clubs in 15 years so thought best to try out a few options with the help of a pro. Bought the ping g710 irons and g410 driver/5 wood. Pretty happy with the service, and should see a good few years service. They are already helping reduce my scores. New putter next????
I was playing to 18 HC for 5 yrs, wondered why it was so hard to drop score? was using burner 2.0, reg shaft, standard grip, ping driver/woods reg shafts just off the shelf. I got fitted few month ago for JPX 921 Forged XSTIFF pro modus-medium grips, 2deg TOE DOWN. Cobra f9 driver 9.5 deg. In litrally 10 rounds I dropped to a consistent 10 handicap. No more hook pulls, dispersion is way smaller, distance are same but landing angle of 47 degree instead of 42 deg so i hold greens. I play upto 5 iron, 198 yards carry, then fitted to 7 wood, 5 wood, 3 wood. Golf is way easier now, my goal is 5 handicap in next 6 month. I take shallow divots so wedges bounce are lower and fitted too so i get crazy spin. Fitting deffo works if you deep down know you should be playing to a lower handicap
Would be good to see a comparison of your numbers between the Mizuno Tour van fitting and build and you online fitted Hogan irons....as an aside I also game Mizuno T20 50;54 &58 with 46 HMB PW (soon it be MB in the shorter clubs once were out of lockdown)...
When you hit your driver at the end, you called them a fade when they definitely 'looked' like a right to left draw with the shot tracer, was that just camera angle?
Great video...looking forward to getting a fitting once lockdown over 12 years since my last fitted with AP2's can't wait to see what difference 12 yrs of tech advances can do.. keep up the good work 💪
I definitely think so, there's no cost involved, yes your looking at small %'s in difference but there's no downside, yes there may be an initial outlay but I guarantee any good fitter discounts the product if you make a purchase
As a new golfer, I am not sold on custom clubs as something I need, and my fear is spending too much money before I know for sure if this is a game I will stick with. If after a year to three years I am still enjoying the game on a regular basis I could see getting more into custom clubs, but technology has improved so much. I can get shot monitors, home sims, and the tube, so telling me, you got custom clubs because you love the game and you enjoy it. Well, I love bowling, and I have 4 bowling balls because they all hook differently, if I were only bowling to bowl, would I have that many, no I'd have two. I love the game, so I end up having more. I enjoy target shooting, and after years of doing it, I have 4 guns, do I need that many no. If you said, getting custom-fitted was important because learning to swing the club can be majorly affected with the wrong club if you have the wrong size club, and only a fitter can tell you if your club is the right size club or not, and if the club isn't the right size you'll lose 100 yards on your drives, you'd have sold me, but I'm a golf geek and I enjoyed it, and I should too. I feel I can learn what I need to from the tube and for free.
Matt you have some good points, what is never quite mentioned or showed would be the impact or difference fitting does on high handicapper. No doubt that you are getting better performance out of it as a professional. From what level of golf would you suggest it? I mean a high handicapper or beginner will likely buy second hand products and not spend thousands of pounds for new clubs and a fitting. Just some food for thought. Keep it Up
Good solid vlog Matt. I like idea of getting fitted and will probably go that route when next buy a set of clubs; god knows when that will be however. Cheers
I'd love to get fitted!! I think I'd love the experience and think it would be a massive benefit, however I know it comes at a cost, one my budget will probably never stretch to!! You sound very confident in your set you have, just need that confidence to transfer in to your putting mate!!
Hey Matt, I am a high handicap golfer who has not been playing too long but going to start building my bag and getting fitted as soon as shops open and it is safe to do so. Can you recommend anywhere in Manchester / the north west to have this done (Not American Golf)
I'd love to be custom fitted. I think that most of us have the reverse approach to the game and adjust to the performance and nuances of the clubs we have. Obviously not the right attitude but over time we can somewhat master them. I did enjoy your enthusiasm when you were fitted and felt slightly jealous but the attention to detail involved was mind blowing. Now get some fairways and punish your approaches. Look forward to seeing your upcoming vlogs to see how you do but it's a confidence booster without doubt. Go Matt !
Proper Gap Wedge is very important because iron lofts are so much stronger. I would go for a Gap Wedge that matches the set if available. Would look at a more traditional 50 wedge if I was well into single figures. Mizuno fitting is really cool. 3 swings with the Swing DNA measurement 6 iron. 3 shaft recommdations come up, 2 will be likely be better than the one you use if you haven't been fitted before, the 3rd will be a huge improvement. Even better, no upcharge unless you have a really exotic shaft (Autoflex anyone?) Once the set comes through, my pro offers a free gapping session and can tweak lofts by the odd degree to ensure consistent gaps up the set. That's where you club pro really separates himself from other options in terms of service.
Until I get more consistency in my game I don't think a fitting will benefit me. Soon hopefully, but not yet. I would have loved to see you break down the entire fitting process by the way. As well as distance what else do they do? How do they do it? Maybe a future video? EDIT: Oops scratch that, I've just spotted your video on the fitting. I'll go and check that out :-)
I think if you are a good low hcp golfer, yes, worth every penny. If however you are a weekend warrior like me playing off 14. No. I bought a set of one length forged irons off the shelf and they have been excellent for me.
Some good things to think about when getting clubs. I’ve been fit in the past but because of my game, it didn’t help a lot. I was fit for my current irons that I’ve had a couple of years (Mizuno Hot Metal Pro 919) and they are great irons. Just wondering Matt, when you were talking about hitting a fade, were you moving the ball left to right or right to left. The tracer seemed to indicate right to left, correct? Thanks, Matt!!
It's funny, not sure whether it is the lack of activity on course, competitions, content but it feels like more and more people are saying to get a fitting. The thing that surprises me about this though is that you (& some videos by others) say that the last set was completely wrong (for you)... Does that mean fitting technology has gotten better, or you had a bad fitter previously, or has your game changed a lot since the last time you were fit/bought clubs? I got my first ever fitting last year, quite enjoyed the experience (I do find it hard to hit balls in simulators though) and my handicap went down enough to merit club purchase at least. Maybe this year I will get a driver fitting, I bought last year online after one or two (too many) sherbets.
I just got fitted with Taylor made irons and I was hitting my new 7 iron 200 yards it was 20 more yards then my old ones. Is hitting a 7 iron 200 yards good
I think the knowledge of the fitting, and knowing for sure that any issues cannot be blamed on the clubs are big. If you believe you were fit into the best clubs shafts and what not for you then you will play better.
If you have been fit once , and say the spec came out at an inch longer and 2 degrees upright, is it fair to say that that would be your spec should you want to change clubs in the future so you don’t need to be fit again...?
Do you have a set of each brand? If so is there any amount of significant difference between the brands. Why did you choose one over the other? Play a round with your new set and old set in a scramble fashion and see what the score difference is.
My personal opinion means nothing but I think unless you’re a single digit handicapper getting fit is not gonna make a difference because double digit cappers don’t have enough control of their swing. I really think u need to b fitted to get the most out of swing and equipment
The biggest benefit from custom fit is confidence, if you did not gain confidence then it was NOT worth it. Simple as that.
I think it depends on the fitter, my oldest Son was fitted while I watched,,,,iron shafts too stiff, 1 1/2” too long ( had to be cut down after he could hit them) pushed one brand,,,,,,not a good Experience..guy just was a salesman , not a clue.
Am i the only one who think a fitting must be aimed to scratch and professional golfers only?
Doesn’t matter how good you are, a good fitting will improve your game.

the fit on the tour truck is at a charge, but some fittings come included in the cost of the iron.
