Thank you so very, very much for uploading this. When I first saw this performance it was a revelation, and when it was taken down from TH-cam I thought I'd never be able to find it again.
We so often comfortably assume the speaker is male or the same throughout this clever poem. Like Joyce's "Ulysses," first published around the same time, it too is a collection of voices. This excellent performance delights by unsettling our assumptions.
It was the then still derelict Wilton’s Music Hall, in 1997, directed by Debora Warner, before the Wilton was restored and reopened. I was there too, it was amazing, she is an incredible performer, I saw her in many productions in the ‘90’s, always mesmerising.
Yes, I too saw this performance in 1997 at Wiltons Music Hall. It was all the more atmospheric for being performed in such a dead end backwater of a place. Fiona Shaw was magnificent.
So this a recording but not of the performance at Wilton's. I went to that £5 and signed a waiver.... the theatre was in a very poor state and Fiona and Deborah did a fundraiser there
This is a performance of towering genius! As others have commented, this deserved (at least!) an Oscar.

THIS DESERVES AN OSCAR
Brilliant reading brings it to life in a way that other readings have been less forceful and less all absorbing.
Caught this on BBC2 at an impressionable age - a formative experience. A long-delayed joy to experience it again.
I had no idea but I’ll listen to anyone read this poem
The joy of watching this again and being able to share it with my own students is very great. Thank you x
