For me, I love the way the individual pixels look on on the NGPC. I wish I had an extra console to have one og, and one modded for when I do want to play in the dark.
That is a cool feature of the newer larger screen. I think I just need to see some better videos and reviews. Seems like some are saying the bottom row of pixels are being cutoff with it.
The visibility of the lcd screen is what me turned off from getting one back when it first released, with an lcd upgrade kit I might consider picking one up now. Thanks for this video!
I might have to pick up another Pocket and try my hand at this. I just can't bring myself to mod my original... This video also reminded me that I really hope I can get my hands on the Analog Pocket!
Breathing new life into retro consoles is awesome. I wonder with the bigger IPS backlit screen how much more if a drain will that be on the batteries. You should see if there is a rechargeable battery mod.
Even with the smaller LCD the batteries drain pretty hard now. Definitely not lasting nearly as long as they used to with the original screen. That’s to be expected though. I’d be curious to see if the other screen is similar to what I’m already dealing with or substantially worse.
I bought mine way back in the day and still play it. My wife thinks its funny i still play a device that doesn't have a light. I originally got Pac man and SNK Vs Capcom.
That’s awesome. I only knew one person in college who had one. I don’t think I even saw another one until I bought mine. Time to get a new LCD and change your life.
For information, with this new IPS screen, it is advisable to use 1.5v alkaline batteries or rechargeable batteries with a constant voltage of 1.5v, because conventional rechargeable batteries have a voltage of 1.2v and this is not sufficient for the IPS screen. If you use 1.2v rechargeable batteries, the console will turn on the first time you use it, but after that the screen will not turn on, there will be only sound and no picture. In this case, you have to remove the 1.2v batteries each time, wait a bit and then put them back to play again. Conclusion, buy 1.5v stable voltage rechargeable batteries or alkaline batteries
That shirt is dope! Good to hear about these kits. I don't own a Pocket yet but... someday. I'm not a huge portable gamer either, but at the time of this stuff's release, it's about the only gaming I really did.
Fangamer used to sell them. It came with a cool NGPC sticker too. If you’re just curious about the games I’d say emulate them. It’s honestly my preferred way of playing these because my eyes can’t handle small screens for extended periods.
I just received my LCD kit from Console5 earlier in the week and didn't realize it's a smaller screen. Was only $50 so it's not a huge investment, especially with no soldering (maybe). Might just do it and see what the larger screens look like later down the line and how efficient they are with 2 AA batteries.
That’s where I’m at. I waited so long, finally caved, and then the larger screen came out. I knew this is exactly what would happen. It’s comical. I just don’t care enough to make another switch after spending the money on this one.
You can just pop the speaker out with a flat head screwdriver instead of de-soldering then it just pushes back in. I did the mod a while back, definitely worth it despite the smaller screen. I have a couple of bad condition cases so will use one to test the new larger screen once I see one where the bottom few rows of pixels issue has been fixed The new smoked/see thru black case from aliexpress is good and goes together perfectly, just use the screws that come with it
I really liked that clear smoked shell too. I was close to ordering that with the larger screen but decided to just stick with what I have. I also don’t need to be spending $70 for yet another solution for a problem I already solved.
The few times I wanted to play it this winter I haven’t been able to because it’s impossible to see if you aren’t sitting by a light. I figured why not give this a shot.
Never had a NGPC but I've always wanted to play the games on real hardware or at least on FPGA hardware. One of the reasons I never got the hardware was because of the screen but always wondered if these type of mods would change my mind and your video helped me. I think I may just buy it pre-modded. I often wonder now, how the heck did we play on handhelds before backlighting.
GameBoy was brutal, even in the day. I had a Nuby light for mine but it still was a pain. I remember sitting by the window in my old house growing up playing it. Really not ideal but we didn’t have anything better and just learned to deal I suppose. Looking back now though it’s really tough to want to deal with that.
