At the risk of invading his privacy I'm sure John Paul won't mind if I say that in the mid to late 1980s I used to visit him at his home regularly to tune his 2 Steinway Pianos when he lived in Devon. He and his wife made me really welcome with their generous hospitality.
When I finished tuning his piano and played it over - he used to enjoy my playing a short Scarlatti Sonata just to check over the fineness of the tuning. He was the most attentive listener I had ever met.
John had a studio adjoining the house which had a lot of very impressive equipment including a Fairlight Music Computer that could sample voices and sounds and use them on keyboards in harmony. He demonstrated to me how I could sing in harmony with myself which was quite magical - this was fascinating to me at the time, as I was only just beyond a Commodore 64 and onto a 386 PC with early Windows™. John struck me as a really genuine guy, unassuming and respectful. In fact he didn't seem like a person who had just stepped out of Led Zep when they disbanded.
I missed those visits when he had to move 80miles away out of my practical zone of operation. Anyway I wish him all the very best and he may be delighted to know he doesn't look a day older than I remember him from 30 years ago! Well, maybe the hair ;-)

@Marko Fahrenheit You use a tuning crank or lever to adjust the tension of the strings. Most pianos have over 200 strings all wire and bass strings copper wound wire. It would take more than there is space here to describe how it's done. Plenty of places on the web will describe the process. To tune by ear takes several years of training and a great deal of practice. Tuning using electronic monitors of the sound is useful but the end result isn't as stable as doing the job by ear and feel.

John and John Paul were an absolutely amazing rhythm section. Jimmy was great for sure!!!! But, without John and John Paul, zeppelin wouldn’t have been zeppelin.

I love the bass on The Lemon Song. It's more up front in the mix than the bass in most Led Zeppelin songs.

The good things is that his band mates, know it and recognize how important he is. for them he is the genius in the band (as seen on the LZ interview with Letterman)

All great bands have that one quiet genius who is the glue. JPJ, Charlie Watts, John Entwistle, George Harrison come to mind.
How was Charlie Watts the genius? I'll give you quiet, but surely Keith gets the accolade for being the core of the band.

Harrison was the least "glue" of the four Beatles. Lennon said publicly that he was an ingrate.
I've listened to many of the songs Brend and Keefer have written, the before and after Charlie is given the song is phenomenal, he sets the mood for the songs, listen to the song Almost Hear You Sigh, Keefer version with Steve Jordan, then listen to the finished project after Mr Watts had his input, a beautiful little song, so delicate and very melodic, ask Brenda or Keefer who is the last person input to that groove on the player ¡😎¡
On many records, you can barely hear the bass guitar. Jimmy knew what he had in John Paul Jones and I give Jimmy credit for his mixing talents that allowed us to hear John's bass guitar so clearly on all Zep albums. I'm sure it wasn't an easy task considering what a hard hitting monster drummer Bonzo was.
As a Led Zep addict i just can say this man is a great musician, a great artist.that's all that's enought.
People talk about how good Plant and Page are, but here is a bassplayer from a band from mid last century and he´s still getting 280 000 views on some 9 minute interview.

JPJ has remained widely active and musically fresh, Them Crooked Vultures was the best thing Grohl and Homme had done since the 2002 QOTSA album/tour, and JPJ had a lot to do with how well it came out.
Richard Harrold : THE thing that keeps the TCV album from sounding like another Queens Of The Stone Age album IS Jones' presence on it -- you know you're listening to JPJ on bass, and not some Joe Lunchbox bassist, because it has that instantly recognizable JPJ "sound" that is uniquely his and no one else's on that instrument.

The bass GUITAR that is, and this conversation was likely had when it had only about 5/6 years old and being mainly used for one type of (not particularly respected) music. Not that crazy a suggestion. In retrospect the organs and electric pianos he played actually had less time left in the limelight than the Fenderbass did.
Jonesy is musically amazing and he has aged well. Love him !

Love Led Zep (but who does not...) but JPJ is by far the element who characterized their music in a way similar to Richard Wright with Pink Floyd. Both bands would have sounded much differently without their "touch" if I am explaining myself clearly enough.
Absolutely. John Paul Jones was/is to Led Zeppelin Who John Entwistle was to The Who--not only in terms of their similar instruments and personalities, but also in terms of their musical strength and stability. They were each the Rocks of their Rock groups!

I always thought Jonesy was too good for Zeppelin... He was the only trained musician in the band (even though Jimmy had lots of session experience), It was Jonesy that came up with all those orchestral arrangements and swinging bass lines. He's responsible for the complex timing in Black Dog and Kashmir (though he never go a credit for the latter) If Zeppelin were around today, I think JPJ would get a hell of a lot more attention than Page, Plant or Bonham.

This man is so humble. I'm ecstatic to see him finally coming forward with more tunes for us and to just get to KNOW HIM!!! "The quiet one". I believe EACH of the four members of Led Zeppelin were EQUALLY responsible for their phenomenal success. I'm one of their biggest fans!!!!!!!!!! That was then, and this is now.....
It's always the third most famous member- the one who isn't the lead song-writing pair, or the drummer- cough cough george Harrison. Quiet.
Zeppelin--like the Beatles--were that kind of band where the chemistry between the members was such that they were all irreplaceable. That's not the case with every band. And that's why the band broke up upon Bonzo's death.

Im a big fan of Led Zeppelin, since I play bass myself i consider John Paul Jones as my inspiration, he is talented and a humble bassist which actullay makes him cool. Great musician, great man.

As a bass player myself, he's been a hero from the beginning. Saw Led Zeppelin for the first time in '69 at the Anaheim Convention Center with Jethro Tull OPENING for them. Then in '71, The Forum in Inglewood, CA, '73 The Forum, & twice in '75 at the Long Beach Arena and The Forum.
In '77 at the Hyatt House on the Sunset Strip, working the counter in my wife's gift shop, Jonesy comes in to buy Tiparillos. Told him what he meant to me, he smiled, thanked me and he was off. Very cool moment!

Everybody keep saying that this man is underrated, when in fact all one has to do is listen to any Led Zeppelin album and you'll know exactly who this man is, his musical skills are from another Realm, he could walk with us mere mortals in public and no one would know anything well played mr. Jones well played, and there's only one human on this Earth that can boast they played bass in Led Zeppelin oh, and this man is him , long live the Mighty Led Zeppelin.

Jonesy never lost use of his senses in the early years, stayed married & focused on his music. One of the best bass guitarists period. Loved this interview.
He stayed in different hotels because of the escapades of the other 3 and flew his family into the U.S. and other countries so they could all be together. Very much a family man with morals.

Phenomenal musician. The least heralded & celebrated member of Led Zeppelin yet any band in the world would kill to have him in the lineup. Gives you an idea of the one in a billion chance of assembling Zep level talent.

John Paul, as a kid you were the first real bass player I had ever heard.Such a melodic and progressive style, you defined the electric bass in my opinion as do most.The only way I can describe it is magic.Thank you for inspiring a 10 year old playing bass on a six string electric guitar trying to find my musical identity and eventually finding one of the greatest joys of my life.

Jonsey still continues to be a powerful example for any muscian and music lover. He has continued to be true to himself and I am sure he can play anything.
Stood out well in Cardiff Capitol (now demolished, but still haloed ground) on Mon 12th December 1972. Remember him well. Long hair, centre parted.Bearded, denim clad. Playing what a bass should be, - the foundation, and beyond. Bonham pushed so hard. Plant took us everywhere. Page 'Danced like an idiot and played like a demon' some reporter said.I still live that show with all of the early Zep bootlegs. Hey Man, they were the days. Groovy, yeah,.......
What a lucky guy to get into music with his father there to bring him in! Awesome! Shows you the power of the involved parent.
My favorite Led Zepplin! He was just so focused and extremely brilliant musician. He aged so very well too. Good people! He was ALWAYS my favorite and really a genius.

Also have to add that I'm glad to see JPJ endorsing Elixir strings. They are hands-down the best-sounding, best-feeling and longest-lasting strings ever. I have Elixir Polyweb 10's on some of my axes for about 5 or 6 years now, and they still sound fresh and brand new. They way they resist corrosion and sound great is simply mind-blowing!

Anyone who was a ZePPeLiN fan has known John Paul Jones was an incredible musician and still remains one.
They were all great musicians but JPJ was an enigma. In the background he was the cement in the blocks of led zep.
I saw Zepplin play in Dallas 3 different times. I always admired J.P.Jones ability to play the right bass parts. He never got too busy, he just laid down a great big fat bottom end that made Zepplin the band they were. Jones is a very accomplished musician on many instruments. Always laid back and very cool...
He got super busy in the lemon song. Did they ever play that one live?
