@@rodhillweather In your opinion, do you trust forecasts from the weather channel Rod? Because the weather channel says 28 degrees and snow for Salem, yes I did check to make it was salem, or! However the weather channel does not show any ice/freezing rain. Nws/noaa portland, or is a little different, they show a high of 30 degrees for Salem, OR on saturday. Does that maybe mean that Salem starts as snow, then changes over to frz rain later in the day? I know i'm antsy, just curious what your thoughts are.
Thank you Rod for this detailed report!! I really wasn’t expecting any snow this winter here in the Portland area… 😅. I am So Grateful you have a TH-cam channel now so you can educate us about meteorology! Love it!! ❤ Now I can plan our Friday accordingly.. 🤔
Though not affected by arctic air, we’re looking at a low this morning (Thursday, Jan 11) in Honolulu of 60 degrees! Never seen it that cool here in 30 years of visiting. Maybe I should research some record lows.
I left the house at 0500 this morning, it was 34 with just a little slush on my car..I am at 1220 feet about 8 or so miles South of Estacada. Wind stayes south all night.
At this point it looks like some sort of snow or ice storm is heading here. We should all hope for snow because ice is 10 times worse. Weather channel showing a possible snow chance also on tuesday night 3-5 inches?? What do you think about that rod. EDIT: They changed the winter storm watch from 1-6 inches to 1-8 inches. Worse storm in the making???
It's ironic that PNW Weather Watch (who loves snow) has been forecasting snow for WA all week and it's not coming. While Rod (who doesn't like snow) has been forecasting mostly rain with a tiny bit of snow for Portland all week. It seems like both people have been forecasting what they are actually hoping for!

Sw Washington Cascade foothills at Ariel, Yale, cougar, Yacolt, Amboy, Faugher Lake, chalatchie all got the the snow with down trees, down power lines, and power outages. 10 to 12 inches in areas. Snowed all day!
I’m in Unincorporated NE Battle Ground(but just 10mins from downtown B.G)….We got snow by 9pm Tuesday, with more Wednesday morn. It warmed up to 34/35 & melted halfway, but as soon as sun went down, it was back to freezing. We had two large hardwood groupings fall from the saturated roots and weight of the snow. One of the large trees, about 50-55years old, totally blocked our long private driveway, so we couldn’t get out until it was cut up into logs(which took ALL DAY)!!!!I’m already DONE with this snow business, and MORE is coming. Please no more!!!
We had 4-5 inches in the foothills of the coast range (850 ft elevation), 25 miles W of PDX north of Highway 26. Temps stayed below 0°C until 2pm, then we had dramatic heating. Ice rain returned as the sun set.
Almost a full 12” in Woodland, only 800’ elevation. Strange looking at the cans in Sandy at 1200’ and seeing maybe an inch. Looks like the person in Hockinson is seeing what we are!
Can we just acknowledge that the GFS called the fact that the cold air was not going as far west as the Euro had it? I concede - this time, GFS killed it.
No idea what's going to happen. Models are in major disagreement. GFS/Meteoblue predicting snow, ECMWF/Canadian says we'll be very cold and dry. GFS predicted the Polar Lobe better than Euro and tends to do better in short range forecasting but we'll see I guess. Hoping for some snow in our area.
@@robeast692 Tillamook is not the north valley, Tillamook is west of the valley and west of the coast range. You have to cross the coast range to get to Tillamook from Portland.
I had looked at the weather on my phone and the chances of snow here in washington dropped to clear sky's and low Temps. We were supposed to get 1-3" Fri, Fri night, and Sat
@@Lightnang_ Seattle channels cover more up north than the centralia are, I like the Portland channel for this. He also explains it better. Yes that weather forecast changed, but I'm not complaining, that may keep ice away.
Dang it. I have to drive from east of estacada to pdx and fly out at 6 am on Saturday morning. This is going to be awful most likely. Do planes takeoff in snow and ice storms? Does anyone know? I'm hoping so.
Is there any forecast / consistent place that focuses on PDX West Hills weather? Since many of these weather events affect us quite differently than the lowlands, we aren't left with many options that specifically look at above 500' or 900' in the PDX area. Pretty crazy when we are exactly 1.2 miles from the city center....
With east wind developing Friday, snow amounts on the east slope of the West Hills may spike. Portland could see up to 6" of snow it appears. East winds along the east slope may spike snow amounts to 8-12". Cold temps likely teens Saturday morning and possibly 10-25 degrees Sunday morning.
Thank you - I was thinking specifically about storms like the Jan 10-11, 2017 event that brought us 13 inches, while the rest of the city got slush and minor snow. Good to know the factors that combine to result in a very different outcome for Council Crest versus everybody else.@@rodhillweather
If we get that low pressure at the correct area, I would say to expect 6+ inches of snow because that'll last for all day friday, friday night, and all day saturday. Its the timing of east winds and location of low pressure system.
TY Rod! Rule of thumb -- be prepared, stay home, don't get caught up in the panic. LOL
Yeah, they might even cancel schools, or do half days because snow will start in the mid afternoon.
NE of Hockinson 1300’ we have 10” of snow. It started to rain. It’s trying to snow again as it gets darker
Wow - thank you

Could this be one of those east side events where those of us on the west side get mostly rain?
No, this is a widespread event throughout the Portland metro and north of Salem

Yeah, that could be possible if we could stick onto those cold temps and if we had enough moisture available.
