  • This is such a simple upgrade to do to any Strat. It takes 5-10 mins and all you need is a 10 mm socket.

    I have the same locking "F" logo tuners and it's a great mod for a tremelo guitar plus it makes string changes a snap. Had the same old ones he did too. Not modifications, just remove old, bolt on the new. Every guitar should come with locking tuners. I know every guitar I have will have them.

    • @WoodesosGuitarMods
      @WoodesosGuitarMods  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ya they're great eh. I agree, all tuners should be locking.

    • @jamesc6137
      @jamesc6137 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The “locking” has nothing to do with locking tune into place any better than “non” locking. The “locking” word and function is just useful for faster string changes. Thats it. There are tons of folks who don’t realize this. They assume locking tuners lock the tune in. Wrong.

    I know its old, but thanks for video! Locking tuners are a big plus whether you tour or not, and my philosophy is "drill away" life is short, your guitar is NOT a couch or a toilet seat, alter it any way you seem fit, make it yours. Ive sanded down necks on Strats and les Pauls, and added midi pickups and routed out tele chambers, do it, dont live in fear

    I installed locking tuners on my Mexican 2023 Stratocaster, set it up with 8 gauge, decked the bridge, and replaced the bridge pickup with a Seymore Duncan Hot Rails.
    Now my neck and mid pickup needs to be replaced too because they sound cheap and the SD doesn't hum at all so it made the original pickups sound like they right out of a cheap Chinese factory. lol

  • @christosfragias592
    @christosfragias592 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's also worth noting the locking tuners come with a 18:1 ratio. While my MIM Strat would have a 12:1 or at best, 15:1 ratio, which means the locking tuners provide much more fine tuning. Also interesting, is the original tuners on this video only came with two taller tuners, while the locking tuners have three taller locking tuners.

    When you install and tighten them to control the tightness you could use a small torque wrenche so they are all tightened with an equal amount of pressure so as not to damage the head stock, they are relatively low cost.

    I recently bought a set of chrome Fender Locking Tuners on eBay to replace the stock tuners on my 2014 Fender USA Standard Strat, I've tried a few other brands of locking tuners in the past on one of my other guitars, and was a bit disappointed with the quality and results I got, one of the worst sets of locking tuners I've tried were a set of 6 genuine gold USA Sperzel Locking Tuners, pretty much every single one had about a quarter-turn of backlash and it states on the Sperzel website that they are supposed to have minimal backlash, they also had a nasty habit of breaking strings too, tried a set of Schallers and was disappointed with them as well, I've also tried a set of PRS Locking Tuners on a PRS SE Custom 24 guitar, only about three of the PRS Tuners out of the set of 6 were any good, one had a lose-fitting tuner button that caused about a quarter-turn of backlash, one felt really gritty when tuning the string up to pitch, and one had a slightly lose capstan making it hard to keep the string-tuning stable, so I wasn't very impressed with the quality of the tuners at all, even tried some grovers and some had varying amounts of backlash making accurate tuning very hard to achieve, I'm thinking that the quality-control of Sperzel, Schaller, PRS, and Grover has slipped a bit.

    Locking tuning keys. Picture the headcap of the neck as the face of a clock, with the top being 12:00 and the nut being 6:00. Line the six tuning machines so that the first string keyhole is set at 1:00, the second at 2:00, the third and fourth at 3:00, the fifth at 4:00, and the sixth at 5:00. Pull the strings through tautly and tighten the thumb wheel, locking the string in. Now tune to pitch.

  • @dalepal

    That’s a nice and easy upgrade since you don’t have to modify the guitar. Good point about keeping the original tuners to put back on and improve retail value when selling though it baffles me that upgrades like these devalue the guitar.

  • @user-lj3tg4nk3e
    @user-lj3tg4nk3e 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have 5 Strats and I put the Fender locking tuners on all of them. They are a great upgrade. Another added benefit is that they add some extra mass to the headstock which increases sustain. On one Strat they even got rid of a dead spot on my fretboard. (a note that dies out quicker than the others)

  • @SuperCarver2011
    @SuperCarver2011 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice set and an easy mod compared to other guitars where tuner upgrades requires
    new bushings and bushing reamers, drilling new mounting holes and having to go through
    a lot of re-modification if you want to put in the original tuners for resale.

    You mention devaluing a guitar by carrying out certain types of modifications, but how can you devalue say a cheaper priced Squire by putting these tuners on ? Instead I would say that’s a major upgrade from a tuning point and therefore surely would add value?

    There's nothing wrong with upgrading tuners, pickups, pickguards etc... on high-end valuable guitars. That being said, you will definitely want to pack and store away the original parts in the guitar case so it may be restored to original condition should it ever be sold. I would not hesitate to buy a completely overhauled guitar as long as the original parts are included.

    THE AD THAT PLAYS (girl learning guitar): There isn't a way to learn guitar 'RIGHT'- you play your own way. Don't try to be like anyone else. If you just want to be more technical and knowledgable about the fretboard - then by all means. But guitar (like successful bands/musicians) is subjective.

    You say they don't keep tune any better ? From what I've heard, they do keep tune a lot better if you bend strings or use tremolo , as that tends to slightly unwind the string on your non-locking, putting it out of pitch.

    *QUESTION FOR ANYONE* - I had Fender Locking Tuners put on my Fender Modern Player Telecaster and paid a guy at Guitar Center to install (another $50 on top of the $60 tuners)... and he had to drill wholes for the guiding pins... When my new Fender Strat arrives via FedEx -- I should NOT have to drill any holes, right? otherwise why would the locking tuners need the pins if EVERY guitar would need it? Like what were they made for if not a Strat, right? REASON IM ASKING is because i made the poor choice of buying a $129 sea foam SQUIER strat and put locking tuners on - now they drilled holes so i cannot return. So when my FENDER strat comes in, i want to switch the tuners over myself.

      Santiago Jara González The higher posts are closer to the nut. The lowest ones are farthest from the nut. This keeps the same angle on the Fender spender guitars ( Strat, Tele, etc). They came on my 2018 Tele Elite. Fell in love with the Fender locking tuners the first time I changed the string on IT. So. Now Santa brought Fender locking tuners for the 2017 Fender Strat Professional !!! Gonna be GREAT!!! Remember on Strats to put graphite on nut & bridge spots where the strings touch, to keep it in tune.

      The roman numerals are DIE numbers and the casting dies are numbered so when one of them gets gummed up (and parts start being rejected during inspection) the plant
      employees know which die to take apart and clean or repair. Means nothing to consumers for position of install. Just remember, taller posts close to bridge (for the wound strings) short posts are for the unwound E,B,G. Hope this helps.

    The “locking” has nothing to do with locking tune into place any better than “non” locking. The “locking” word and function is just useful for faster string changes. Thats it. There are tons of folks who don’t realize this. They assume locking tuners lock the tune in. Wrong.

      Youre right, but it actually is also better to hold the tune... But as you said, the locking itself is just describing how the system works

    Do you recommend these or the Kluson Locking 2 pins? They look exactly the same. Thinking about getting a pair for my 2009 American Standard!

    If you're designing a warmoth neck, does anyone know the tuner hole size you would need for these Fender locking tuners? 25/64" (9.92mm) or 13.32" (10.32mm)/11.32" (8.73mm)?

    Do they make 2 types of 2 pin tuners? Ive a schector strat neck id like to get staggered tuners but the fender locking tuners I ordered like you have the pins wont line up on the schector. The schectors a smaller pattern.

    Is there a weight change with the locking tuners? Is it enough to impact balance, etc...

    Important to note that they don't fit Squires.

      Not true. They do but you have to drill new holes. That is different from not fitting.

    Does any one know if these tuners will fit on the new offset series guitars? I have the Mustang 90 and I am considering locking tuners?

    I bought a used fender. Supposedly installed by a luthier. But he must be old and blind because he set a tall tuner on the high e-string. So Lo Hi Hi Hi Lo Lo.

    May be a silly question- but do i get right handed tuners for a right handed guitar (tele or Strat). Or do i get “left handed” because they are on the left side of the headstock?

    • @craigthomson3621
      @craigthomson3621 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fender make right handed and left handed locking tuners so order the correct type for your guitar. I have put Fender left handed locking chrome tuners on my left handed American Professional Telecaster.
