Quick video on Support. And what some perceive as support is a squeeze. Not actually support. I fell into the trap years ago but found my way out. Hope this helps.
Genius! Nobody teaches this things like you. I've missed 10 years of my life not bumping into your channel, but than God,I am still alive and hearing this things from you. This is the correct technique and correct approach. Such a grace from heaven. Thank you, sir.
In all seriousness- You get to the point so quickly. So many teachers out there just beat around the point until their point is lost. Nice one Daniel. Thanks.
Nicely done, Ray Gillen was a monster singer. Been checking out your vids, great stuff. There are too many "singing coaches" that can't actually sing. Imagine that. Nice to see someone with technique and chops.
thanks i appreciate the compliments. And i just want to say that technique is not an actual definitive science. if it was, we would all just turn it on and there would be no use for teachers for very long. the voice handles slightly different everyday and all you can really do is manage it.. I f i could sing like ray everyday(and i have seen ray on bad days back in the day when he was alive.) I would be some sort of phenom and most likely hugely successful but we are only as good as are worst performance in the eyes of many. so keep practicing and working on it..;)
Thank you, Daniel! You are really articulate and helpful in your explanations. I am learning so much from your material. Inspires me to continue practicing! Thank you for all you do!
that Badlands cover is one of the coolest things ever brother! you dont hear too many people covering Ray Gillen. I learned headvoice by trying to sing 'Seasons'
Ray is one of my favorite singers. I used to crank hiwire and sing it in the parking lot while everyone else went shopping. When everyone returned I sounded like the Godfather because I was clearly doing it wrong. hehe
Thanks! that support AKA Laugh is EXACTLY what I was looking for for about a month! SO SIMPLE! Thanks! also, thumbs up for the WHISTLE in the other video :)
i can feel what you are saying my chords have more pressure when im pushing, but ive always wondered why my falsetto sounded completely opposite and disconnected. now the falsetto and lower range feel smoother and similar in relaxed pressure. thanks for the distinction.
Hey, I just discovered you and wished I did so a couple years ago when I was 19. I've been through all that muscle dysphonia phase I had because I thought I supported my tone but I brought extreme tension because I love rock. I just learnt how to properly support a healthy tone last month but this month I am getting it a little more consistent. No pain at all in my sound and I just watched this video and couldn't help but to nod at every statement you made. Thank you for actually spreading valuable content.
Cool video, Daniel, i totally get what you mean, I was doing that thing for a couple of months until a teacher told me to not sing so operatic but to bring the tone forward, at my teeth and lips. So when I do "mm" with closed mouth I am supposed to feel my lips and front teeth tingling or vibrating. Is that correct? And what about higher notes B, C, D, should they also resonate that way? Your hair grew awesome since last video !
Actually I am squeezing there. I know this because its a thing i do with my throat for effect and it feels a certain way. I know what you are talking about and it sounds similar but has much more overtones and isn't as taxing. Although i wouldnt suggest singing Journey like that. As you ascend the cords get thinner(vibrating mass gets smaller) and resonance takes over for sound if you wanna sail up there ala steve perry, tony harnell, ryan shaw etc..Well thats how i look at it.
Duchito I have a hard time humming in my upper voice. I feel is causes strain but if it works for you that's great. As far as high c 's and that area don't try and tighten my stomach as much as I just push it out like a baby.
Daniel, great video. I have a question though - if we want a slightly darker, classical-like sound, how do we know that it is a healthy sound and not a wrong one?
I reckon! I get what you mean now because during a practice session I tried recording myself singing with that extremely dark sound you mentioned, or what is often mistaken as 'supported' tone, and I ended up having to rest my cords for days.
You said in your other video that you inflate like a barrel, especially the ribs, and really don’t let this structure fall throughout the entire phrase, right?
Hello! I'm here again. Just need a thing to be clarified. As I've listened again through your video, in particular with support breathing that your abdomen and on your lower thoracic region were going outside. The question is, so when you sing,in order to provide support, does your abdomen and back expands outside? how can it be because we are releasing the inhaled air? I can't sleep thinking of it. I need your wisdom please?😅
Because there is back pressure if you sing with no pressure like talking it will deflate but singing requires pressure and pressure makes you slightly expand not deflate . It will start to deflate very very slowly if you continue on one breath but you should breath before that starts to happen that’s like squeezing out toothpaste no good
@@danielformica-yourvocalteacherwow. i will try these. I know this will take time for my body to adapt, but this is the first time somebody explained this very well and very unique. I will update you for my progress. Thanks coach. You are the a great man.
I look at opera singers most of them seem to be pushing squeezing the cords, they seem to be pushing most of the time.I sing lead in Barbershop we are told light and bright but sometimes you have to push into the sound .It's not easy to sing lightly in lower notes. Good advice though.
Contact me on my website daniel@yourvocalteacher.com i promise its no where near what some of the teachers are charging. For $300.00 an hour you better clean my house, give me a bath, and take me to dinner.lol
When I laugh my stomach goes in and not out the way you show, when using support a lot of teachers teach that the stomach goes in when supporting the tone. Could you please elaborate a bit more on how your stomach goes out when using support? It seems a bit odd that you expand while inhaling and then expand some more when exhaling
its the epigastrium that goes out. so bring your fingers up a little higher right under where your ribs meet in the center of your chest. your lower back and sides will expand as well when you laugh you do not have to make them expand it will just do it naturally. go ahead and laugh. i have never come across anyone where this doesn't happen its totally natural. good luck now start laughing
daniel formica No bro, not at all, there something weird there, as I exhale or hold a note, everything around my ribs will go in, because air is going out, I cant phisically understand why anything would go out as you are loosing air, actually for air to go out you muscles around the ribs contract, thats how you get the air out, it makes no sense for anything to expand, please explain cause it does not happen to me neither do I think it makes sense, but I want to understand what you mean.
I just listened to your clips. I think the question should be the other way around .:) you sound fantastic!!!!dont change a thing. if you ever run into problems let me know maybe I could help you with that otherwise you sing circles around me.. cheers
Thank you, sir. I've actually done a Spaz gig here in Cleveland filling in for Dave Dennis (Double D) and was told I knocked it out of the park. I've been doing the Steve Perry impersonation since 1993. Someday I'll get it right :) But I invite you to come hear my 7.5 minute story on this channel. Life isn't all about chicks, tequila, and rock & roll.
Hi Daniel. I've been told not to whisper as it strains the vocal cords and I wondered if the hissing sound you make during the breathing exercise example might cause a similar strain? :-)
well yes, obviously something like Journey, Bruno Mars, Prince would be sung with much less compression and more resonance from the sinus cavity than that heavy, open throated dark (classical) configuration. Trying to sing in upper mix with that classical sound is much too heavy. One can sing high C's with that heavy sound but it takes a very long time to master and even then it doesn't sound appropriate for modern music.
Technically the "heavier" tone you demonstrate is not "incorrect" - it's just another fold compression level from the Steve Perry demonstration. There are 3 different levels of fold compression - light, medium and heavy and each have their own application. The open throat sound you make at 5:38 is simply an open throat, darkened tone. That sound is about timbre and tongue position and inot made from squeezing the folds; it's from sub glottal compression which comes from support.
That 'incorrect" example sounds very correct and nice for me, even better than the "correct" one.. It's darker, louder, more open and powerful - just more operatic. The "correct" one is better for pop/rock though.
Genius! Nobody teaches this things like you. I've missed 10 years of my life not bumping into your channel, but than God,I am still alive and hearing this things from you. This is the correct technique and correct approach. Such a grace from heaven. Thank you, sir.
wow thank you im glad i could help!!!!
In all seriousness- You get to the point so quickly. So many teachers out there just beat around the point until their point is lost. Nice one Daniel. Thanks.
This video popping up has really highlighted what I’ve been doing wrong lately. Thanks 👍🏻
im glad this helps..
You explained it so easily, such an amazing teacher.

Wow, what you are doing at 4:10 is really not easy as you make it sound. Excellent demo man!
Good stuff Daniel
thanks man! looking forward to working with ya!
Very straightforward, thank you!

Great lesson, thanks v much
your explanations were surprisingly comprehensive for how condensed they were.
thanks John I try to KISS.(keep it simple stupid) The voice isn't rocket science so why treat it that way..

Hi, I just want to say thank you rhis video really helped, and was wondering if you can do a technique video on Freddie Mercury please
Duchito I have a hard time humming in my upper voice. I feel is causes strain but if it works for you that's great. As far as high c 's and that area don't try and tighten my stomach as much as I just push it out like a baby.
I also wanted to say the breathe always has to be moving constantly.
What do you think about learning alone? this was so util for me, thank you
I think its great all my favorite singers are self taught. I needed help but you might not
wow thanks man
Daniel, great video. I have a question though - if we want a slightly darker, classical-like sound, how do we know that it is a healthy sound and not a wrong one?
+Timliu92 do you feel it in the throat or outside the throat? in front of your face not squeezed down in the throat.

so when we need support we should squeeze our abs?
no opposite don't squeeze abs
Great!!!
If I were to send u a vid do u offer evaluations?
