Fish was always the best way to make me puke as a kid. We visited my grandfather in his small fishing town in Massachusetts when I was 5 and that was the first introduction I've ever had to fish. There was a pungent scent of rancid seafood everywhere near the docks, and my grandfather sucked a fishes eyeballs out of its head right there on the docks. Then we went to the beach and dug up muscles or clams or whatever they were. That was going to be our dinner. Soggy "meat" that had a taste reminiscent to those rancid docks, and would go bad if left out for more than a couple hours. It took a long long time before I was even willing to try salmon after that.
My dad caught freezers full of king mackerel in the 70s at the pier in Fort Walton Beach. We ate it all the time. He would batter it up and deep fry it. That, hushpuppies, a salad, and iced tea was a typical Friday night supper for us. We looked forward to those meals. Pompano, dolphin fish, cobia and others were baked with lemon and butter. We pressure cooked bonita to supplement dog food.

I’m from the South in the US, and we believe the same thing. That fishy taste is easy to get rid off if you know how to prepare the food. Seasoning and sauces do a ton to mask it, but also if you dispatch the fish instead of letting it die on ice then that removes a lot of that fishy taste too because the fish meat has less of that stress hormone that contributes to the taste

@@PinkGaeWhistle I'm glad. Commercial fishing bullshit. They put seasons and limits on recreational fisherman and commercial fishers go and fill a boat. The more fish people can't sell the better.
Reality of it. Got to know exactly how to cook it. Primarily the reason because you need to let it marinate longer than a few hrs, better if overnight because it can be oily or have a strong fishy taste compared to other fish. However, it’s one of the best fish I ever ate, used to get excited when we would leave early morning, go out and catch a cooler full and come back home by midday and just busting at the seams waiting for the next day to chow down this bad boy.

It literally does though, for people who don't like that flavor. That being said, calling a fish one doesn't like the taste of for being too fishy trash is a little silly.
It took me 40 years to be able to stomach salmon because the fish taste was way to strong for me as I grew up the the mountains where the strongest fish flavor available was from a trout fish, and we didn't eat them often. I didn't like them either, so my parents usually let me get away with taking 2 bites of fish and then eating the side dishes as the bulk of my meal. Which was good because I probably would have developed a fish aversion if they'd forced me to eat more. However, I did discover a sea of other fish that I did like and eventually worked my way up to appreciating salmon.

Who ever said Mackerel is trash either has never caught one themselves to see it, or just doesn’t know how to prepare it the right way… so many things you can do to it and it is very tasty
Kingfish is delicious when eaten fresh. Doesn’t need to be smoked or covered in sauce and seasoning either. But that recipe looks fantastic and I’d love to try it.
We grew up eating lots of mackerel. Grilled, fried, baked, it's all good. I've never considered it as trash food. It's the oily, strong fish flavour that we particularly savoured. Daddy used to spice it fairly strongly too. Never occurred to me to add a sweet element (BBQ sauce). I'll give it a go
I always loved all fish. My Dad would make a lot of baked fish for our nightly family dinners. I now realize how blessed I was when my parents made the rule "you eat what we eat". It really expanded my pallet from a young age which is unfortunately not to common now a days. I'll literally eat anything. There's only two foods I've ate that I'll never eat again. Lunberger cheese (that super super stinky cheese) and ketchup. This fish looks amazing. And y'all might think it's messy that my parents wouldn't make a separate meal for us if we didn't like what was served, but I never complained because when it was steak night, we ALL had steaks. Dunno though, fishy fish never bugged me.
As usual a great and informative video. From one fish monger to another It's so important to get the end user to expand the acceptance of the incredible variety of delicious species of seafood available to us
Always went deep sea fishing off the gulf coast here at Corpus Christi, TX. Fought the biggest king mackerel for 15 minutes 4 hours from the coast. And let me tell you they FIGHT. the hook had set on his outer layer scaling I was absolutely exhausted after I finally reeled him in. I enjoyed every last bite of him.
All you gotta do is just listen and watch the video. He pours equal parts of "Recteq" BBQ sauce and Mustard Sauce. I'm sure any BBQ and Mustard would work. Let it marinate for a few hours. Pull it out and season it liberally with your favorite rub, he used "Screaming Pig" rub. Then smoke it till it's done.

Just a heads up folks king fish has high mercury content in the US, not sure about other parts of the world. Eat sparingly, especially if you're pregnant and/or breastfeeding
Not only king , but anything that eats them including, tuna, wahoo, barracuda, marlin , swordfish & shark. You know , we instill fear in ourselves & limit our liberties without absolute proof. People are persuaded to processed food based on these fears while losing all sense of common sense. Keep living . Something is healthy today is condemned tomorrow.
Fortunately most seafood also contains Selenium which, in the body, bonds with mercury which then the body cannot absorb and is then removed with waste. You can increase the Selenium ratio by adding grains into the meal which also helps reduce the risk of mercury poisoning. There’s a lot of talk about increased rates of mercury in seafood but it’s mostly by globalist claiming over fishing. If we eat more “trash” fish which is sustainable, we’ll be fine. Sardines, anchovies, small boney fish, etc.
@@attleviyeah… and? Shark, swordfish and all the other fish you mentioned (besides tuna) is not recommended to eat. It depends on the type of tuna fish. This isn’t “being a hater”. It’s stating a fact that you can’t accept.

1) Pan fried the ginger Julian slides then take ginger out, left the oil in pan. 2) Then use that remaining oil to pan fried the fish. 3) Before take the fish out, add 2-3 table spoon of soy sauce on the fish. 4) get the fish on plate, put the fried ginger on top, pour the sauce (ginger oil + soy sauce) on them Done

@pokeosinisor yes I do that as well and after giving it a good rinse to wash off any leftover blood i prepare a bowl of cold water with a bit of flour mixed in and let the fillets sit in that mixture for a minimum time of 10 - 20 minutes then rinse off the mixture well, this step completely removes any fishy taste or smell and is even better than the milk hack some people use to remove the unpleasant smell and taste, highly recommend you give it a try 👍 just make sure you FULLY wash off the flour water to prevent having the extra taste of flour

As a kid my mom made that king fish in our Puerto Rican household. It was the best
Us inPhilippines..we dont call it trash fish..we can make many dishes with this fish, and its super delicious

I defiantly love that fish. One of the few that I can actually eat. My grandparents used to lightly batter and then fry it. Soooo good ! 👍

Kingfish is delicious when eaten fresh. Doesn’t need to be smoked or covered in sauce and seasoning either. But that recipe looks fantastic and I’d love to try it.
That’s why I never understand people who enjoy seafood. “I don’t want it to smell like fish”
Well. That’s what it is. So.
Lime or lemon cut the fishey flavor too

We grew up eating lots of mackerel. Grilled, fried, baked, it's all good. I've never considered it as trash food. It's the oily, strong fish flavour that we particularly savoured. Daddy used to spice it fairly strongly too. Never occurred to me to add a sweet element (BBQ sauce). I'll give it a go
this fish has a strong fishy flavor
Love recipes like this. Getting folks to consider using unloved or wasted food or by catch. Great stuff 👏🏽
Nope, because when the price soars, the people who been making it the whole time often lose access
Lmao how am I supposed to choose to eat by catch. They kill it. It doesnt end up for sale anywhere but maybe on the coasts

Will you PLEASE POST RECIPE !
I usually take 15 photos as the cc's drive by... but no written or cc's?
Dude! You left me with my mouth watering!!
Specifically he uses Recteq Spicy BBQ Sauce, Recteq David's Limited Edition Shoot Yeah Mustard and Recteq Ron's Screamin' Pig
Crazy to think that ppl in the states consider it trash! I think it might be one of the most common fish eaten in the VI. Fried, stewed… I eat it every way. Now I want some 😭💞🇻🇮

You forgot to mention smoked meats are leading cause of stomach cancers but everything else is good lol
@@user-dx9ch2ke9h FALSE!...💀🤣🤦♂️
Where did you get that from?..@@user-dx9ch2ke9h
@@user-dx9ch2ke9hwhile you’re right about the increased chances of cancer there are many ways to prevent it also and still be able to enjoy smoked/grilled meats. Preventing the fats from dripping directly into or on the fire pot alone negates most issues alone. Not many people with a brain still use lighter fluid to start their smokers… Not eating delicious burnt ends or even charred meats helps a lot. Thinner cuts of meat that cook faster is another that will help by being able to cook it faster. Also, NOT cooking your meat well done is a big one also. No clue why anyone would want their red meat cooked past a medium rare anyways bc anything past that isn’t even worth feeding to the dogs.
@@HughWoowhat the fuck? Then what is the point?
I’ll never understand why people don’t like fishy fish, you’re literally eating a fish.
Marinate the fish in lime salt and vinegar to rid of the fishy smell
Exactly.
Different fish taste different. Different people like different tastes.
“Try out this recipe” like most of us have access to Kingfish
King mackerel is a staple in Nigerian cuisine. We also love it smoked. It’s fantastic!
Great to know...I am from south of india and ours is a coastal region ..people here call this fish as Vanjaram . This is a really tasty fish ❤if marinated properly and fried. yet i feel pomfrets and horse mackerels to have much better taste. Anchovies are also great and we call them nethili and we use them in a tamarind based spicy fish curry..all these fishes are so healthy and that is y fisherfolk in our region are extremely strong and live till 100 despite smoking and drinking cheap Indian daru🥲(liquor)😅😅 .jokes aside, these r very healthy.
I love king fish and the way you cooked that thing was absolute perfection! Made me drool a bit ngl
Plenty of proof around in this case. Not an unfunded claim. Plenty of measurements done on this subject.
At least make sure you eat fish that has scales. That’s how toxins are released. Any fish without scales hold toxins
King fish is my favorite. Whether stewed, steamed, fried, grilled really slept on

Nothing is trash when you put a lot of effort into it good job
1) Pan fried the ginger Julian slides then take ginger out, left the oil in pan.
2) Then use that remaining oil to pan fried the fish.
3) Before take the fish out, add 2-3 table spoon of soy sauce on the fish.
4) get the fish on plate, put the fried ginger on top, pour the sauce (ginger oil + soy sauce) on them
Done
You wold think the soy sauce is too much for the King Fish, have you tried it? Does it work? I love soy sauce on fish with either ginger or lime, but only with basa, cod, haddock that kind of thing.
Some people call it trash fish - because they don't know how to prepare it, they mostly prefer to eat REAL trash that is super-processed fat and chemicals bought at supermarkets
Doesn't king mackerel have an insane level of mercury in it. I heard you weren't supposed to eat more than one or two a year

Why would you? Do you wash your fillets after cutting them? Not trying to be a dick im curious cuz never done that myself, wash it after i gut it for sure but not again after that and that fish was gutted already
@@pokeosinisor yes I do aft I fillet.
