I can't really think of any other comedy act like these guys. The way they'd be totally rude and violent, then sing like angels out of nowhere - incredible. I saw them do this live and it was jaw-dropping. I miss them. Australia needs this kind of satire more than ever. Times are dark here now.
Well tenacious d but they came much much much later Proud of our homegrown boys The Doug Anthony allstars Silverchair Powderfinger Midnight oil Killing Heidi John Farnham Jimmy Barnes Tommy Emmanuel James Morrison Johnny Diesel Hell, Kylie Minogue Tina arena Kate ceberano The whitlams Tim Minchin The axis of awesome Proud of them all, even though I'm generally into harder rock stuff.... I appreciate just about all music And I'm proud to be a patriotic Australian. Should never be ashamed to be Aussie!
Paul's voice is divine, but the harmonies cannot be discounted either. They make an already incredible voice that much better. Wow. Still brings a tear to the eye man years later.
Wow ... I had forgotten how fabulously entertaining and, brilliant they are ....... Paul's voice.... an angel.voice........ yes.... he sings beautifully .. but those harmonies are the real brilliance ... what a great group. So funny hilarious fun.
I had forgotten just how beautiful this version was. "They talk like devils and sing like angels" indeed. This was the first version of Grapevine I'd heard, so when I heard the original I almost couldn't accept it. God, Paul has such a powerful and beautiful singing voice, the three of them definitely made this the best version of this song I'd ever heard, on an Australian comedy show no less.
Yep talk like devils for sure . Then the contrast of the angelic voices. The ad lib... Goon show ....humour..... Couldn't want for more ... they give an overload of the best entertainment .
+Jon Etkins - Jon who the fuck do we have to kill to get The Big Gig released on DVD? And i mean all 65 episodes with the whole crew. Christ, the ABC know how NOT to make money, don't they?
For me this was one of the best nights of television ever. I remember being in shock that they sang a song without "acting up". Was so glad I had recorded it on VHS.
Years and years I've been looking. I couldn't figure out their name and none of my friends remember them. I remember hearing this and it blew my mind. It's actually lovely. Whenever people talk about the best version of this song I think of this. cheers.
I saw this the night it was on--- by far the most powerful thing I have ever seen on tv-- had to be 1989-- people have to remember this was totally unexpected in the middle of a comedy show.
Absolutely great performers. This show, along with all those other quirky 'left of centre' comedy shows back then like "Blah Blah Blah", "The Money or The Gun" etc... remember Flaco? were incredible. So much talent. DAAS were one of the best, they could virtually do it all. Thx 4 posting.
this is brilliant - i`ve been searching for this clip for years - gives me goosebumps to listen to it again. would have been nice to hear the comments made after it was first screened - the compare mentioned that paul had finally made his mum proud!
It's all subjective. Of course we have all heard CCR's version. And you can check Wikipedia to see the long history of covers of this song. But DAAS were an extremely talented ensemble, and by whatever standard you apply, their version is fkn awesome. Period.
These guys played live in my town once, I missed the show but Paul went into the audience and passionately kissed this bloke and then said "Fuck mate, what did you put in your hair?"
@humdrummer . Mind you, MS isn't a death sentence, (My Dad was a sufferer), Tim is still out there working and he's still great fun. Did you check out WTF? (With Tim Ferguson) when it was screening recently? It was great.
Never heard of these guy until I recieved a partial file from a mate on the infamous Yahell Mesenger. The file was "Doug Anthony All Stars - I Fuck dogs.mp3"... and I laughed my nuts off until the song abrubptly finished. so had to inestigate to see if I could find the whole version.. Glad I did as these guys are EXCELLENT! they got 1 fan here in UK.
Imagnine showing this TV gold to the woke (weak) generation of today.. no wait maybe we should, they'd all die from "offendedness"... and that can't be a bad thing....
Remember the old days when the ABC actually did good comedy, without a political agenda? We used to have Theatresports, The Big Gig and Geoffrey Robertson's Hypothetical all on the same night. DAAS did release at least one live performance video, and they are even freer with the language and ideas when they are not bound by tv rules.
I recently got into Doug Anthony All Stars and it's really hard to find anything at all. I was hoping for something like "Carnal Carnival." Does anyone know where I can find it?
Short answer: You can't. Long answer: DAAS Kapital (their TV show) was never even released on video. A few live concerts were put on CD and video. These come up on eBay now and then. Literally, that'll be your only chance. Oh, it'll be PAL videos, not NTSC 'cause they're Australian.
Wasn't 'Alternative Comedy' at its height of popularity back then too? Yeah, and that was totally devoid of any kind of talent and humour too. Singing was ok but the attempt at comedy was shit!
+Ben Richards Hah, would like to see some footage of either Ade or dear old Rik rolling them off on stage like this, before going into a beautiful rendition of a good song. (Seriously, they're peers, not wannabes. If you do have a link to such a performance PLEASE SHARE IT)
in the mid eighties, EVERYone under 25 was a Rik and Vyv wannabe. Their humour permeated everything back then. RIP wik. However these guys (DAAS) were original, and their wit genuine. Maybe you had to be there...
You can call DAAS "Mayall and Edmondson Wannabees" if you wish, and that's fine. Nothing is created from a vacuum. But DAAS took their influences and built on them, and created something that was unique and brilliant. Criticising them for doing that is basically pathetic.
2024. Reliving my youth by watching this... used to watch the Big Gig on late night tv.... Bob Downe etc... but loved DAAS...

it got darker'...
They are such babies here! I remember watching them on telly - i was so glad I turned 18 just in time to see them on their farewell tour
I heard this when it was first broadcast on ABC, live of course, and it sent shivers up my spine. Still does.
Paul's voice is divine, but the harmonies cannot be discounted either. They make an already incredible voice that much better. Wow. Still brings a tear to the eye man years later.
One of the most extraordinary moments of Australian television. And still utterly, utterly magical after all these years.
Indeed! I still remember watching it when the show aired (live?) and being blown away. Still blown away so many years later.
So agree.
Wow ... I had forgotten how fabulously entertaining and, brilliant they are ....... Paul's voice.... an angel.voice........ yes.... he sings beautifully .. but those harmonies are the real brilliance ... what a great group. So funny hilarious fun.

Almost 30 years on and Paul's voice is still heart meltingly gorgeous 💕
I had the privilege of being in the studio audience for this particular episode of the Big Gig. Thanks for the memory.
+Jon Etkins - Jon who the fuck do we have to kill to get The Big Gig released on DVD?
And i mean all 65 episodes with the whole crew. Christ, the ABC know how NOT to make money, don't they?
I'd buy that for a dollar!
Would buy it to say told y'all so,
ABC so shitsu its Tonka
Jon, I totes hope the galah got ya ;)
For me this was one of the best nights of television ever. I remember being in shock that they sang a song without "acting up". Was so glad I had recorded it on VHS.
this has to be the best version..
This damn near makes me cry. Aussie talent. Unique, unashamed, and here, utterly beautiful.
Years and years I've been looking. I couldn't figure out their name and none of my friends remember them. I remember hearing this and it blew my mind. It's actually lovely. Whenever people talk about the best version of this song I think of this. cheers.
Awesome Aussie Talents
I remember watching this..it was something so unexpected..and that's what made it so fantastic!
I saw this the night it was on--- by far the most powerful thing I have ever seen on tv-- had to be 1989-- people have to remember this was totally unexpected in the middle of a comedy show.
For the algorithm! Three voices that worked so damned well together, from three larrikins 😅
Still gives me goosebumps all these years later
i don't think I've heard something so beautiful before... *wipes tear away*
Absolutely great performers. This show, along with all those other quirky 'left of centre' comedy shows back then like "Blah Blah Blah", "The Money or The Gun" etc... remember Flaco? were incredible. So much talent. DAAS were one of the best, they could virtually do it all. Thx 4 posting.
I completely forgot the show existed until I started looking up DAAS. It was awesome
Sublime version of HiTtGv.
I'll never forget seeing this on TV wen it was aired live, almost bought me to tears! 👍
Best boy band ever
Still love you guys. Back to the Galway days. 🥰❤️
Their performances still ring in my head. Puddles Pity Party in trio.
Loved DAAS version of 'heard it through the grapevine' and the big gig was one of Aust. best comedy show!
Love this interpretation!!
this is brilliant - i`ve been searching for this clip for years - gives me goosebumps to listen to it again. would have been nice to hear the comments made after it was first screened - the compare mentioned that paul had finally made his mum proud!
these guys do song versions that are awsome... pauls voice is spine tingling... been wanting to hear these guys again for ages.. thanks for posting
Excellent version of the old song. I actually saw this when it first went to air.
paul has a beautiful voice!!
Thanks so much for posting. I always loved DAAS! I must have only been 14 when DAAS Kapital was on.
these guys were great; I always really enjoyed their tongue in cheek performances.
I don't care what you say - this is the best version.
Have ye nay heard of C. Clearwater Revival? ... wanker. No offence.
ameagher2 Utterly and completely concur. I only wish that these guys recorded a set or two in HQ audio.
It's all subjective.
Of course we have all heard CCR's version.
And you can check Wikipedia to see the long history of covers of this song.
But DAAS were an extremely talented ensemble, and by whatever standard you apply, their version is fkn awesome. Period.
Absolutely . No contest
Credence didn't sing anything well. The reels 'version of "bad moon rising " was far better than theirs. They were Aussie too.
Just remember folks this is the same trio that sings that perennial classic "I fuck dogs!"
OMG this sooooo good. I nearly started crying just listening to it even though I'm making my homework at the same time
Just seen these guys in Edinburgh, clearly much older but brilliant
My childhood.Billy Snedden was a deep cut even then.
very well done love it
So amazing to have met Tim a couple days ago! Feel so honoured. :D These guys are just so amazing :)
fuckin brilliant, I haven't seen this since it originally aired on ABC. Thanks for posting, it go's straight into favourites!
Still good every time I see it. DAAS rooooles
Damn Paul is a good singer
Paul's an excellent singer.
To sing that song well you need the right balance of sadness and anger while maintaining a sort of composure. Just like Marvin, Paul nailed it.
Paul is AWESOME!!!!!
These guys played live in my town once, I missed the show but Paul went into the audience and passionately kissed this bloke and then said "Fuck mate, what did you put in your hair?"
Lmao the guitarist in my band is Richard Fidler's son.
this group deserve their fame. the created an environment where politcal correctness and the need to not upset people was a crock viva the revolution
love these guys :)
IIRC, she said"The night the Doug Anthony Allstars finally made their Mums proud" :-)
Long live the Doug Anthony Allstars!!
@humdrummer . Mind you, MS isn't a death sentence, (My Dad was a sufferer), Tim is still out there working and he's still great fun. Did you check out WTF? (With Tim Ferguson) when it was screening recently? It was great.
DAAS is that! Cool love it ("Das" in German = that, daas = thats it)
I have all episodes on VHS....
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & .... Nein
:P
I came here because of Richard. I feel like they're on another planet to this American.
amazing !!!

I've always liked DAAS!
Remember the old days when the ABC actually did good comedy, without a political agenda? We used to have Theatresports, The Big Gig and Geoffrey Robertson's Hypothetical all on the same night. DAAS did release at least one live performance video, and they are even freer with the language and ideas when they are not bound by tv rules.
without a political agenda? DAAS threw politics into everything - their name for one thing.
It still had a political agenda, but it was subtle and well produced.
A completely different world to the intellectual drivel the ABC produces now.
It's a wonder they didn't get into a studio and get their arses together and turn out an album.
@bersaba
Indeed they shoulda...
Damn ! That boy can sing.
~
say this live all those years ago.
They were about to show a little more of a serious side and got 'rid' of all the viewers watching.
Brilliant.
wow
I recently got into Doug Anthony All Stars and it's really hard to find anything at all. I was hoping for something like "Carnal Carnival." Does anyone know where I can find it?
Jeez... Richard Fidler really copped it in the name dept!
The good, the bad and the guitarist - at least GNW is back on atm.
Leafs jersey @ 1:14? Guess Australia would be just about the only place on earth someone could wear one of those in public without embarrassment.
wow that was Paul McDermott? he looked so different and yet so familiar
A young McDermott? Wow.
paul has a beutiful voice
Come on guys, get back together and do an album. Just one more. As if Australian music doesn't seriously need a major pisstake right about now.
fucking sweet
Love the 80s fashion in the audience... lol
ahhh DAAS
She how young they are then
DAAS Is good ! yah !
Showing up rapper
5:13
It's good but I think some of our Aussie cousins are getting somewhat carried away with the hyperbole, lol. :)
don't tease us!
"Gotten" has got gotten.
wouldnt surprise me. there wasnt that great programming at that time in terms of comedy.
Wasn't 'Alternative Comedy' at its height of popularity back then too? Yeah, and that was totally devoid of any kind of talent and humour too. Singing was ok but the attempt at comedy was shit!
How did this ever pass as being either funny or entertaining.
?
rik mayall and ade Edmondson wannabes...
+Ben Richards You do realise DAAS were doing this before Rick Mayall and Adrian Edmonson were known right?
Ulfgarius they started in 84, the young ones started in 82. Before that, rik and ade were doing comedy songs etc...
+Ben Richards
Hah, would like to see some footage of either Ade or dear old Rik rolling them off on stage like this, before going into a beautiful rendition of a good song.
