They are selling just the limited pre launch editions for now... which are loaded with kit like leather and things so thats why it costs so much. The basic price with government incentives here in Italy will be 19000 euros by the beginning of 2021... if you count the fact that it costs virtually nothing to drive it it is like buying a petrol powered car for 13-14000€... which is the starting price of the old 500. Considering the fact that it charges very quickly, 5 min for every 50km, I think it will revolutionize italian motoring in a way by replacing a LOT of petrol powered cars in urban areas.

Great review Mat! I was a little disappointed when I first saw pics at how similar it was to the previous 500; however now I see the subtle and clever differences and think it looks great. I think its main rivals will be the Honda E and the Mini E, but this is definitely my favourite, looking fwd to test driving it.

Here in California the 500e was launched as an emissions "compliance" car in 2013. I liked the look and needed motorized shopping cart. So I picked up a used Orange 2013 500e with the white interior a year ago as a local runabout for $5000 - it did have 70K miles on it but with the 10 year battery warranty I figured I'm good for a while. Incidentally, I noticed the max range has degraded a little from new but I can still reliably push it to about 80 miles of mixed speed driving. We are an all-electric household with a newer 250 mile range Chevy Bolt for our road trips. Looks like pricey EVs are going to be a hard sell for a while as long as the low petrol prices and eliminated commutes persist at least.

Hey Mat, they didn't include gesture control for the same reason you think they should add it. As they gesture a lot you can imagine then triggering it on accident a lot. And when they trigger it by mistake the tenth time and start having a go at the system... you can see where I'm going with this
